The free event runs from 1 to 4 p.m. The Museum’s hands-on programs are designed for children ages 5-12 and their families. Hands- on activities highlight different parts of the Museum's permanent and temporary exhibits and collections. Participants make arts and crafts to take home and sometimes see demonstrations or performances. When the Kalamazoo Valley Museum opened its newly-renovated history gallery, “Kalamazoo Direct to You,” it recognized the everyday local heroes who helped Kalamazoo become the place it is today. Abstract This single-case study explores the use of popular music in response to the destruction of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina in August, 2005. Using research in sociology of disaster and uses and gratifications theory in mass communication, data collected included original music written in response to the hurricane, major benefit concerts that aired in the wake, and re-appropriated music that developed new meaning when used in conjunction to the case. Analysis yielded that popular music was used to raise awareness, raise funds, and express emotion following the disaster. Common themes throughout include the impact of genre on how this was accomplished and the messages it yielded, the power of collective effervescence, and the importance of space and place when dealing with tragedy through music. ‘DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO MISS NEW ORLEANS?’ THE USE OF POPULAR MUSIC AFTER HURRICANE KATRINA by Jennifer Billinson B.A., Indiana University, 2006 M.A., Syracuse University, 2009 Dissertation Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Mass Communications Syracuse University August 2016 Copyright © Jennifer Billinson 2016 All Rights Reserved Table of Contents Chapter 1: Introduction p.

This definitive new book features original and revealing interviews with the group, plus key people close to them. It not only traces U2’s meteoric rise to fame, but explores the background and inspiration behind every song written by the band. A full analysis of U2’s long-awaited new album No Line on the Horizon makes up the last main chapter. U2: The Stories Behind the Song is a good book for anyone wanting to know more about U2. The book is very reasonably-priced, mainly due to its small size, compared to older editions. However, this is the fourth edition of the book, and compared to the previous edition, it is quite lacking. For starters, a lot of information from the previous edition is missing. Almost every song from Boy up to No Line on the Horizon is explained in detail, but a lot of the entries for older songs have been shortened, with less information that was previously available.

It’s most often an honest question from both colleagues and non-teachers alike, though sometimes the latter’s fascination with “summers off” borders on an obsession. Still, in whatever form, the question still comes: “What do you have planned for the summer?” Even though I answer this question more assuredly as a college teacher than I did as a high school teacher, this year I find myself fishing for an answer that will satisfy.
