2016 ANNUAL REPORT LANGUAGE OF LOVE - by Rick Jett, Executive Director Mankind has been seeking ways to overcome language barriers ever since the tower of Babel in Genesis 11. Although it is a difficult task, some individuals successfully study and learn other languages in addition to their native tongue. Bible translators purposely choose to live among unreached people groups that have no formal written language. They help them to develop an alphabet, vocabulary, and sentence structure in order for them to be able to read God’s Word in their own heart language. Communicating your thoughts, emotions and intentions to others takes work.

If you go to another country and don’t speak their language, you might find it very frustrating to get an answer to even the simplest questions. I remember on a mission trip to Columbia, South America, a group of us went for a walk in the neighborhood in search of some ice cream. We found a small shop and one of our team members went to pay for the treats we selected, but he did not know Spanish, nor understand their currency. Wanting to ask the vendor how much we owed, he just kept repeating, “Pesos? Pesos?” When the clerk responded with a very puzzled expression, our friend thought he could clarify his question by asking it more loudly. So he practically yelled at the man, “Pesos?! Pesos?!” Fortunately, a bilingual passerby stepped in to keep the situation from escalating and to help us pay a fair price for our ice cream!

Francis of Assisi said, “Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.” Proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ is a core value of the IDES ministry. It is the very reason for our existence. In countries that are “closed” to the Gospel, Christians are not allowed to boldly and publicly proclaim the message of salvation through Jesus. But they can communicate God’s love by providing disaster response, hunger relief, agricultural aid, vocational training, and medical care. IDES mobilizes resources as a strategy for fulfilling our Lord’s Great Commission, enabling Christians to communicate God’s love in a language that suffering people can understand.

We are very glad to share with you in this issue a summary of the various ways God’s love was communicated through the IDES ministry in 2016. It has been an exciting year and we give God all the Glory! It is our prayer that as you read this annual report you will have a sense of gratitude to God for allowing you to be a part of proclaiming the Gospel all around the world with the language of love.

Evangelism projects focused on providing Bibles and Christian literature in local languages, and supplying motorbikes to national evangelists. We shared in the cost of printing and distributing a Pictorial Life of Christ in the Tagalog language of the Philippines. IDES also shared in the cost for printing a Bible commentary series in the language of one of the world’s largest unreached people groups. While all our projects provide opportunities for Christ’s love and hope to be shared, evangelism projects are specifically focused on providing evangelistic resources that will be used by evangelists, church planters and missionaries.

“The places where the team ministered were primarily Buddhist villages with Christians being a small minority of the population. Christians are persecuted in some of these areas and if a person converts to Christianity they will be rejected by their family and community. Therefore the objectives of this trip were to assist pastors in their evangelistic outreach and to provide a more positive view of Christians in Myanmar. We are very grateful for a generous grant from IDES which allowed our team to have the Bibles and literature, medicines, and supplies they needed to minister in Myanmar. With the help of IDES our team was able to present the good news of Jesus in places that had never heard the gospel message before. Thank you IDES!” - Mission Partner in Southern Myanmar

IDES worked in partnership with Christ’s servants around the globe to care for victims of tropical storms (hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones), floods, fires, earthquakes, tornadoes, monsoons, landslides, drought, hail, and windstorms. We also cared for refugees and other victims of religious persecution, terrorist attacks, ethnic cleansing, armed conflict and government oppression in a half-dozen nations.

Assistance included the distribution of food, building supplies, water, bedding, cookware and other essentials; repairs to damaged homes and church buildings; storage buildings for victims of U.S. disasters; and replacing essential items which were destroyed.

“We give special thanks to our Brothers and Sisters at IDES who have always stood by our side in times like this when calamities struck. You were there in January of 2010 in the aftermath of the earthquake, and you were there today in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. Once again you have donated generously to us. In so doing, you have empowered us to serve our nationals in the midst of the most horrific human tragedies. For all of these and much more we are grateful and appreciative to you all. We will be forever indebted to IDES. On behalf of the people of Haiti we want to say ‘Thank You’ to you all.” - Mission Partner in Southern Haiti

IDES funds both long-term (12-months or more) and shorter-term hunger relief efforts. Through HOT program, we worked with 15 mission partners to operate year-round feeding centers in 9 nations. We carried out additional hunger relief efforts (3-months average duration) in 14 nations. As part of our GAP (God Always ProvIDES) food- packing program, we sent shipments of 652,032 nutritionally complete meal packets to mission partners in Haiti and Afghanistan.

“We are very grateful to God for our continued partnership with IDES in order to spread the kingdom of God in India. Because of your Christian love and generosity, thousands of people in the places we serve in India are able to have their physical needs met. This often gives us an opportunity to share the Gospel and introduce Christ to the lives of those spiritually lost. A very good example is the ongoing hunger relief for people suffering from leprosy in a rural village through funds raised by the Harvest of Talents (HOT) program. Because of IDES, these people are able to be fed every day and survive to serve the Lord. It’s an amazing story to witness these people with leprosy who once used to beg on streets for their livelihood now have become warriors of Christ spreading how the love of Christ changed their lives forever.” - Mission Partner in Southeastern India

These projects help hard-working people create a better future for themselves and their children. We provided pigs, goats, cows, water buffalo, chickens, fish and other livestock to improve the living standard of the rural poor. We funded agricultural projects for small-scale producers. We sponsored well drilling and other clean water / sanitation efforts in 7 nations. We provided fishing boats and sewing machines to give impoverished people an improved means for supporting their families.

“Both of their primary water sources were not much more than streams and are used to water livestock, to wash clothes and to bathe in. They are contaminated water sources. These are the root of many of the health issues in these communities. By providing a good, clean water source, we not only show them the love of God in a tangible way, but also create an environment in which we can open hearts, minds and ears to the Gospel message. Honestly, our main goal is not to simply provide these communities with clean drinking water. Instead, our main goal is to use these wells as a way of introducing the people to ‘the Living Water” of Jesus Christ.” - Mission Partner in Ethiopia

“Let me share with you about a 13-year-old boy named Givens. He came to the hospital last week not feeling well. He is a known HIV positive child who has been on treatment for the past 9 years. His mother died when he was 3 years old and his father brings him for treatment. He came to the hospital last week because he was feeling so tired and weak. His blood count showed us a Hemoglobin of 1.9!! This meant he was very near death. It’s amazing he could even walk! We quickly transfused him with 1 unit of blood and his Hemoglobin went up to 4.6 and even though that is still very low he will be able to slowly build up his blood count with iron and he will live! Without your intervention we would not have had the units of blood at all and we would have had to transfer him to another hospital. Without money for a blood transfusion he would have died. You gave him life!” - Mission Partner in Zimbabwe

IDES was blessed by another fantastic year of volunteer outreach at our Noblesville headquarters. Volunteers lovingly assembled SonFish Banks, created beautiful Harvest of Talents items, and participated in GAP food- packing events to feed those who are hungry. They faithfully built storage shed units, offering help and hope in times of disaster in the US. They graciously assisted with several major mailings throughout the year. On top of all this, they were crucial in helping us complete various renovations around the headquarters including 2 new bunkrooms (for 16 volunteers to stay overnight), a large new conference room, new showers and bathrooms, major updates in the GAP room, and an expansion of the staff break room.

Even though a lot of items have been crossed off our “to do list”, volunteer opportunities are always available at IDES. In addition to the GAP food-packing program, assembling SonFish banks and building storage sheds, there are many other ways you can serve God here at IDES.

To all the volunteers who served with us during 2016, a great big “THANK YOU”. Your willingness to give of your time and your abilities to serve God and help us spread the name of Jesus to the unsaved has been a blessing not only to us, but also to those in need. Without you we would not be able to accomplish as much as we do here at IDES. You are the strength that holds our ministry together!

We packed a record number of meals, sent two large shipments, and we’re looking to grow even more next year. Some of our biggest packs were with the Wilderness Christian Assembly, MI who packed over forty thousand meals, Clarence Church of Christ, NY who packed over thirty-four thousand meals, and Cornerstone Christian Church, KY who packed over thirty thousand meals. All of us here at IDES would like to thank you each so much for donating money, time, and prayers for these meals. On July 12th we sent out our biggest shipment yet. Although it met with a lot of speedbumps, it finally landed in Haiti on December 10th. God has blessed us here at IDES, and we could not have packed so many meals without all of you. For that we say, “THANK YOU!”
