2 Insurance Times Awards 2020 Welcome to the Insurance Times Awards 2020

We’re delighted to welcome you to the first ever digital version of the Insurance Times awards. Although we know that a virtual ceremony can never take the place of our usual black-tie dinner in the Grosvenor House, we can still join together to recognise the hard work, dedication and tenacity of our finalists.

One advantage with an online event is that there is no limit on attendee numbers. Everyone is welcome and we’re expecting a big audience to log in and show their support for our flagship awards. Designed to celebrate and reward excellence across the breadth of UK general insurance, these awards are as important as ever (and perhaps even more so) to ensure that the companies, teams and individuals who work so hard and bring so much to this industry are recognised.

Next year I hope to be able to welcome you all back to what I believe is London’s best West End venue – the spectacular Great Room at the Grosvenor House. It is already booked for Thursday, December 9 so make a note in your diary now. Let’s hope the vaccine will have worked its magic and we’ll all be allowed out to celebrate for what may be the first major industry post pandemic event…

We’ll be guided through this year’s awards by someone who is no stranger to the broadcast medium, the multi-talented impressionist Jon Culshaw. Enjoy the ceremony and let’s raise a glass to a healthy and happy 2021.

Tim Potter Managing Director Newsquest Specialist Media

Insurance Times Awards 2020 3 Join us in celebrating broker independence We’re proud to sponsor Broker of the Year award.

In a year where business as usual has been turned on its head, we’ve been inspired to see so many independent regional brokers not just cope with the challenges of 2020, but thrive – achieving great things despite the year’s unique circumstances.

Brokers shortlisted by Insurance Times Awards judges this year, are:

• Bollington Insurance Brokers • Global Risk Partners • Clear Insurance Management • Romero Insurance Brokers • Club Insure & NDML

Aviva Insurance Limited, Registered in Scotland Number 2116. Registered Office: Pitheavlis, Perth PH2 0NH. Authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority. Your Host Jon Culshaw

Jon Culshaw is widely regarded as Britain’s best impressionist, with an amazing repertoire of over 350 voices covering politics, sport and celebrity from Boris Johnson to Alan Carr, to Barack Obama, and Russell Crowe to Michael McIntyre.

Originally a DJ, Jon won a Radio 1 talent contest and joined the team on the seminal television satire Spitting Image. He played 40 characters, including Frank Bruno, Michael Portillo, Bill Clinton and Liam Gallagher. Jon then became ‘the man of a thousand voices’ on Channel 4’s Big Breakfast before returning to radio where he made international headlines by calling the Downing Street switchboard and fooling the operators with his William Hague impression. After being put through to Tony Blair, the incident was raised at Prime Minister’s Questions and reported in Hansard.

With an unmatched versatility, Jon found mainstream success with the radio and TV show leading to his own BBC series, The Impressionable Jon Culshaw, which was followed by Jon Culshaw’s Commercial Breakdown and The Impressions Show with Culshaw and Stephenson. He is a regular guest on radio and TV comedy and chat shows from to Parkinson, and frequently appears on election coverage, providing welcome comic relief with impromptu impressions of politicians and commentators.

Away from comedy, Jon’s love of science and astronomy have seen him join the world’s longest running television programme The Sky at Night, as well as writing a column, Jon Culshaw’s Exoplanet Excursions, for the show’s magazine. He has also appeared alongside Brian Cox on Stargazing Live and The Infinite Monkey Cage.

David Stevens CEO, Admiral Group

This award recognises an inspirational and boundary pushing individual and lies within the gift of Insurance Times.

Newsquest Specialist Media’s Managing Director, Tim Potter, said: As a team we spent a lot of time considering who should win this very special award, taking soundings from our contacts across the broker and insurer market.

This year’s winner has led his company through a tough year with skill and a fair-minded determination that has enabled him to reward both policyholders and his own employees.

The insurer he leads acted quickly to share the benefits of lower claims during the first lockdown by paying all motor clients a £25 refund, leading to a big increase in brand satisfaction. And, on retiring from the firm he co-founded 30 years ago, he said a massive thank you to his staff with a £10m payout, giving employees £1,000 each.
