The SuperCurriculum

Outline and Rationale

As part of the Gifted and Talented programme and the school-wide Teaching and Learning focus on critical thinking and cultural capital, the “SuperCurriculum” aims to extend student engagement and attainment across subjects and year levels over lockdown and beyond. It provides higher-ability and gifted and talented students with an opportunity to develop their knowledge, interest and capabilities in the subjects of greatest interest to them during the extra time made available by online learning. The SuperCurriculum is arranged by subject and year group, although this is only a guideline, and students can complete tasks from any list. Each subject is divided into activities. Activities include creative tasks (doing, making and synthesising), external competitions and challenges, and research and critical thinking tasks. The latter are mostly focused upon a philosophical question about the nature of the discipline requiring critical thinking, an investigation of contested ideas and concepts within subjects, a task that requires interdisciplinary and cross-curricular thinking and research, or a task requiring the development of further knowledge within their discipline and thence the development of cultural capital within that subject area, beyond the formal curriculum. In addition to subject-specific activities, there is also an associated reading list, which includes books, films, television documentaries, YouTube channels, podcasts and publications. Finally, there will be an appendix with more general guidelines and resources as to how to research and to write in the form that many of the tasks require: reviews, discussion papers and research reports. We will promote the SuperCurriculum to students in the following ways. 1. All parts of the curriculum will be made available to parents and students from February 22nd. Students will be encouraged to share their completed activities, competition entries and evidence of engagement with the reading list, which will take the form of reviews, summaries or further research. 2. The SuperCurriculum will be linked to the house system, mirroring the celebrating success initiative. Any work that students choose to undertake may be submitted if wished as indicated below 3. A more targeted promotion of the SuperCurriculum will take place in Gifted & Talented and Rising Stars year group meetings, which will be calendared and published. Here I will select activity per week for each year level, with accompanying useful resources from the reading list, and ask students to complete within the week. We will then feed back on what students have learnt and created in the next meeting. Students may contact Mr Moore (SC co-ordinator), Mr Elliott (AHT with responsibility for teaching and learning), their tutor and/or their subject teacher. This is for advice and guidance as well as to submit completed tasks.

Research a specific historic period and investigate the social, literary and economic aspects of the time and link this to the texts that you are reading. What conventions, concerns and assumptions shaped the work of the authors of that time. For example Dickensian England and the works of Dickens.

Maths . Enter the Intermediate Maths Challenge https://www.ukmt.org.uk/individual- competitions/intermediate-challenge/ . Are mathematics and geometry discovered by humans or are they human inventions? Investigate this age-old philosophical question and write a short discussion paper outlining some common positions and your own opinion.

Science . What is science? Research this question and start by investigating ‘the philosophy of science’. Are our definitions of science clear cut? Why/why not? What debates are there over the definition of science? What do we consider a ‘science’ and what do we dismiss as ‘pseudo-science’? Answer in a discussion format . Submit a project to the Big Bang Young Scientists and Engineers Competition - submissions are due in late March https://competition.thebigbangfair.co.uk/

HSN . Complete a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in a chosen subject related to your option.

Geography . Follow a Tropical Storm's Path: Plot the path of a tropical storm or hurricane on a map. Record data about the storm, and make predictions about whether a storm will become a hurricane. Confirm or revise your predictions as you get new data. . Research the impact of geography on the wealth and power of nations - why do you think most wealthy and powerful countries are found in the temperate parts of the northern hemisphere? Why did societies in Eurasia and later North America dominate the world in terms of wealth and power? Good books on this topic include ‘Guns, Germs and Steel’ by Jared Diamond (or anything by this author), ‘Why the West Rules - For Now’ by Ian Morris Subject Activities

Computing . Research a problem of ethics in computing - for example AI, the use of tracking software in hiring and college admissions, deep fakes or the influence of social media on political choices. What are the arguments around a controversial development and practice and what do you think the way forward should be? Write as a discussion piece.
