Box 127, Madison, NJ 07940 August 7, 2013 Guide to the Microfilm Edition of the Mission Biographical Reference Files Microfilm Edition of the Mission Biographical Reference Files 1880- 1969 35 cubic feet gcah.rg.4642 History Note The Board of Missions continued the work begun in the predecessor denominations of the Methodist Episcopal, Methodist Episcopal, South and Methodist Protestant churches. The agency combined both domestic and international work, and the work, both domestic and international started by predecessor women's groups. The agency was divided into three primary groups: Foreign, Domestic and Women. For more detailed information please refer to the mission agency history. Scope Note The biographical reference file collection was created by the former Board of Missions of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Methodist Church. The purpose of the reference files was to provide information quickly about either a person related to Methodism, or of interest to Methodism, or about a Methodist bishop or missionary. The missionary reference files often contain genealogical information as well as information about the person's appointment and interests. It appears that the missionary reference files could be used to inform interested parties about a particular missionary. This collection does not contain a file on all bishops or on all missionaries. It is not clear what the selection criteria was. While the files contain information into the 1960s, the bulk of the collection covers the time period 1880- 1930. Arrangement Material has been arranged in the following manner. The collection has been arranged into two series. The first is biographical information on Methodist bishops, and the second series is biographical information on missionaries. Tolbert Pure liquid water is not stable on the surface of Mars because of low pressures and temperatures. The possibility of liquid water seemed more achievable since 2008 when the - Phoenix lander detected ~0.5-1% perchlorate (ClO 4 ) in the Martian soil. Perchlorate and chloride (Cl -) salts are of interest because they readily absorb water vapor and transition into aqueous solutions, a process called deliquescence. This thesis explores the interaction of several Martian surface analogs with water. To study the phase transitions of the Mars-relevant surface analogs, we use a Raman microscope and an environmental cell.

Moore U.S. Geological Survey 345 Middlefield Road Menlo Park, CA 94025 ABSTRACT This paper addresses questions on Martian surface materials (exclusive of the polar regions) that were posed at a Sand and Dust Workshop in February, 1991. Materials thought to be most likely encountered on Mars are dust, soillike materials, sand sheets and dunes, and bedrock and rock fragments. In response to a need expressed by engineers attending the workshop, selected physical/mechanical properties of these materials are discussed: grain size, hardness, and shape; density; friction angle; cohesion; compressibility; adhesion; thermal inertia; and dielectric constant and loss tangent. Numerical values of these properties are presented for each material in tables. Some properties, such as bearing strength, are only briefly discussed because they are derived from other properties. Additionally, other factors affecting the surface materials and their responses to loads, such as surface gravity, are discussed. In conclusion, four specific questions posed at the workshop are addressed.

The transport of sand and dust by wind is a potent erosional force, creates sand dunes and ripples, and loads the atmosphere with suspended dust aerosols. This article presents an extensive review of the physics of wind-blown sand and dust on Earth and Mars. Specifically, we review the physics of aeolian saltation, the formation and development of sand dunes and ripples, the physics of dust aerosol emission, the weather phenomena that trigger dust storms, and the lifting of dust by dust devils and other small- scale vortices. Background of Foreign Missions in the M.E.C.S. John Wesley's combination of the warmed heart and the world parish gave to the churches following him a great motivation for world mission. This motivation had to survive the traumatic split in the Methodist Episco­ pal Church in 1844 over the slavery issue, the southern section becoming the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (M.E.C.S.). In the division of work and responsibility, the M.E.C.S. was left with missions to Native Americans, slaves, German -speaking Americans and to the poor. These constituted a large home mission field. There were no foreign missions. This lack greatly distressed many in the southern church. Their thoughts and concerns were best set forth by Dr. William M. Wightman, Editor of the Southern Christian Advocate, Charleston, S.C., in a ringing editorial in that paper, September 5, 1845, "A Mission to China." He wrote of the need and the opportunity-five treaty ports had just been opened to foreigners- and he called for action, including mission volunteers. Many readers were deeply moved, but none more so than was Benjamin Jenkins, a well-educated printer who was setting the type for the editorial. He knew he was called to service in China. He offered himself and was ready to go as opportunity developed. 1 The other volunteer was Charles Taylor, M.D., of New York state, a graduate of New York University, with additional medical studies in Philadelphia, where he received his medical degree.
