We wanted to make another film with Projectile Arts that would bring an inspiring cultural experience to America. Surrounded by 20 million Hindu pilgrims at the world’s largest religious festival, the “Kumbh Mela,” our thoughts naturally turned to baseball (we both grew up in Boston as hopeless Red Sox fans). Ichiro Suzuki was about to become the first Japanese position player in Major League history. We were fascinated — the whole idea of Japanese baseball was so mysterious to many Americans, and we knew it could be a great window into Japanese culture. Director Kenneth Eng Of course, Ichiro’s first season in the Majors Photo courtesy of Kenneth Eng turned out to be one for the record books — on top of the personal achievements (the batting title, the Gold Glove, the Rookie of the Year award, and Most Valuable Player), Ichiro led his team to an American League record 116 wins. We discovered Robert Whiting’s book You Gotta Have Wa and learned for the first time about Japan’s National High School Baseball Tournament, known as the Koshien Tournament for its famous stadium.

  • The Work of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in China, 1848-1886
Methodist History, 31:3 (April 1993) FROM MISSION TO ANNUAL CONFERENCE: THE WORK OF THE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, SOUTH, IN CHINA, 1848-1886 MELVILLE 0. WILLIAMS, JR. Background of Foreign Missions in the M.E.C.S. John Wesley's combination of the warmed heart and the world parish gave to the churches following him a great motivation for world mission. This motivation had to survive the traumatic split in the Methodist Episco pal Church in 1844 over the slavery issue, the southern section becoming the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (M.E.C.S.). In the division of work and responsibility, the M.E.C.S. was left with missions to Native Americans, slaves, German -speaking Americans and to the poor. These constituted a large home mission field. There were no foreign missions. This lack greatly distressed many in the southern church. Their thoughts and concerns were best set forth by Dr. William M. Wightman, Editor of the Southern Christian Advocate, Charleston, S.C., in a ringing editorial in that paper, September 5, 1845, "A Mission to China." He wrote of the need and the opportunity-five treaty ports had just been opened to foreigners- and he called for action, including mission volunteers. Many readers were deeply moved, but none more so than was Benjamin Jenkins, a well-educated printer who was setting the type for the editorial. He knew he was called to service in China. He offered himself and was ready to go as opportunity developed. 1 The other volunteer was Charles Taylor, M.D., of New York state, a graduate of New York University, with additional medical studies in Philadelphia, where he received his medical degree.

And for many of the country’s youth, the sport has become a rite of passage, epitomized by the national high school baseball tournament known simply as “Koshien.” Four thousand teams enter, but only 49 are chosen to compete in the championship that grips the nation for two weeks every August. Following two teams and their dedicated coaches, Kokoyakyu: High School Baseball is the first English-language film to take Western viewers inside a world where baseball becomes a proving ground for life’s challenges. Only one team will win each year, but the quest to appear on the “sacred” dirt of Koshien Stadium is a life-changing experience for generations of Japanese youth. Kokoyakyu: High School Baseball opens up the world of Koshien by following the fortunes of two teams as they compete in regional games and then head for the 2003 tournament (the 86th annual games). Tennoji High School is a public school whose team is coached by a dedicated and self- effacing teacher, Masa-sensei, who becomes deeply involved in the lives and welfare of his students and their families.

  • Foucauldian Theory and the Making of the Japanese Sporting Body
DOI 10.1515/cj-2015-0002 Contemporary Japan 2015; 27(1): 13–31 Open Access Aaron L. Miller Foucauldian theory and the making of the Japanese sporting body Abstract: International sporting competitions, such as the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, adhere to a nationalistic and triumphalist paradigm in which strength, victories, and medals are judged more important than anything else. Within this paradigm, what matters most is which sporting body can subdue another. National sporting consciousnesses often reflect this paradigm, and the case of Japan offers no exception. How do international power relations within such paradigms shape sporting bodies, national sports consciousnesses, and our knowledge of them? To answer this question, this paper applies the theory of Michel Foucault to a historical study of Japanese sports. By applying Foucault’s theory of power, especially his ideas of “bio-power” and the “productive” nature of “power relations,” we can better interpret historical shifts in the way Japanese have perceived their sporting bodies over time, especially the view that the Japanese sporting bodies are unique but inferior when compared with non-Japanese sporting bodies. International power relations and perceptions of cultural inferiority weigh heavy on Japanese sporting bodies. They produce certain behaviors, such as the action of toeing the line for one’s team, especially when that team is the nation, and certain discourses, such as the narrative that Japanese sporting bodies must train together to best play together. Keywords: sporting body, nationalism, body nation, bio-power Aaron L. Miller: Kyoto University, e-mail: [email protected] If power […] never did anything but say no, do you really think one would be brought to obey it? What makes power good, what makes it accepted, is simply the fact that it doesn’t weigh on us as a force that says no, but that it produces and traverses things, it induces pleasure, forms of knowledge, produces discourses.
