MEDIA, MARKET ECONOMY, AND CULTURAL TRANSFORMATION: QIN MUSIC IN CONTEMPORARY CHINA by Da Lin B.A. in Music, Xi’an Conservatory of Music, 2005 Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Arts and Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts University of Pittsburgh 2010 i UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES This thesis was presented by Da Lin It was defended on November 29, 2010 and approved by Andrew Weintraub, Professor, Department of Music Adriana Helbig, Assistant Professor, Department of Music Thesis Director: Bell Yung, Professor, Department of Music ii Copyright © by Da Lin 2010 iii Bell Yung MEDIA, MARKET ECONOMY, AND CULTURAL TRANSFORMATION: QIN MUSIC IN CONTEMPORARY CHINA Da Lin, M.A. University of Pittsburgh, 2010 The qin, historically recognized as an instrument of Chinese literati, has been presented in various forms of mass media for over fifty years. After the establishment of the People’s Republic in 1949, the government promoted public performances in a propaganda/persuasion media system; consequently, mass media started to play significant roles in reshaping aesthetic standards, performance practices, musical features, and meanings of the qin tradition. The mass media in China, however, went through a commercialization reform after the late 1970s and has shaped the current propaganda/persuasion model. This new media structure has hastened the emergence of new musical features and meanings of the qin in the commercial logic as opposed to the Party logic. Such interactions with technology have arguably constituted contemporary performance practices that have departed from traditional aesthetic standards held by literati practitioners who played the qin for self-satisfaction.

Yet, while indigenous music historians place too much stress on its aesthetical, theoretical (mainly of tuning and modal system), and historical aspects, traditional Euro-American ethnomusicologists are displaying excessive enthusiasm to present its distinctiveness, often laying claim to an ancient past while exhibiting a timeless present. This thesis tries to problematize guqin scholarship by putting three particular aspects of guqin music through critical examination; they include the modern reformation of notation, the concept of dapii (reconstruction/realization of ancient manuscripts), and the writing of music history.

Abstract This paper highlights Wave-Makers (1910–2010), a collaborative timeline redesign project, which involves interactive and advanced web-based technology to connect and complement arts curricula at two higher education institutions, one located in China and another in the United States. Through in-depth research, video-conferencing, artistic interpretations, and exhibits at both locations, students from the two universities gained appreciation and respect for 20 individuals who made a difference in their respective cultures and helped shape contemporary art worlds. Juxtaposing visuals with students’ personal observations through digital photocollage, this paper shows how and why the wave-makers became inspirational models: Unforgettable Life Stories and Superb Dedication—Pan Yuliang and Margaret Bourke-White; Visionary Commitment and Exquisite Sensitivities—Alvin Ailey and Guan Pinghu; Admirable Integrity and Solid Convictions—Xu Shichang and Norman Rockwell; and Revolutionary Foresight and Groundbreaking Endeavors—Jackson Pollock and Zhang Daqian. Instructional guidelines for implementing this global art project are also discussed. • Metrical Structure and Freedom in Qin Music of the Chinese Literati
Metrical Structure and Freedom in Qin Music of the Chinese Literati Chun-Yan Tse and Chun-Fung Wong TEMPORAL ORGANIZATION IN TRADITIONAL CHINESE MUSIC EMPORAL organization in most genres of traditional Chinese music is informed by the T banyan structure, the concept of which can be dated back at least to the sixteenth century (Wang and Zhang 1990). The banyan structure consists of regular pulsations at two levels. At the higher level, there are slower equidistant pulsations labelled as ban, whereas faster pulsations labelled as yan at the lower level mark the subdivisions between the ban, together acting as “measurement of time duration for the musical notes” (Du 2009). Common forms of the banyan structure include “one ban three yan” and “one ban one yan” (Du and Qin 2012, chap. 8), equivalent to Western quadruple meter and duple meter respectively. Regular quadruple banyan structure, which can expand or contract in different variations of a mother tune, has been well described for sizhu “silk and bamboo” music in Shanghai (Witzleben 1995, chap. 5) and Southern China (Thrasher 2008, chap. 4). Different percussion instruments are often utilized to mark the time points of the ban and yan. In traditional musical scores, the banyan structure is often indicated by circles and dots, representing ban and yan respectively, adjacent to musical notes in gongche notation.1 This concept of temporal organization is akin to one common model of meter discussed in Western academic literature, where meter is considered as periodicity based on durational quantity, and can be defined as “the regular, hierarchical pattern of beats to which the listener relates musical events” (Lerdahl and Jackendoff 1983, 17).2 Meter involves “our initial perception as well as subsequent anticipation of a series of beats that we abstract from the rhythmic surface of the music as it unfolds in time,” and is “a musically particular form of entrainment or attunement, a synchronization of some aspect of our biological activity with regularly recurring events in the environment” (London 2012, 4).
