Converted from a music and dance hall, the Tricycle Theatre opened in 1980 as the permanent home of the Wakefield Tricycle Company. In September 2018 we completed a much-needed renovation that future-proofs the building for the next generation of theatregoers and theatre makers. The transformed Tricycle was renamed , locating it ever more closely with Kilburn and building on the company’s artistic legacy through an exciting programme of new work.

Today, with Artistic Director Indhu Rubasingham and Executive Director Daisy Heath (who joined in January 2019 following seven years as Lead Producer at the ), Kiln Theatre continues its reputation of world-class British and international work, reflecting the exceptional diversity of its local community.

Kiln Theatre has a 292 seat theatre alongside a 300 seat cinema, a beautiful bar and café, plus three rehearsal spaces which are used for our productions, workshops and Creative Engagement projects.

KILN THEATRE

Kiln Theatre presents around six productions per year, many of these are commissioned and written specifically for this theatre, or are programmed in collaboration with national or international companies.

Recent productions include Handbagged by Moira Buffini, which won an Oliver and transferred to London’s West End, Red Velvet by Lolita Chakrabarti (Critics’ Circle Award, Evening Standard Award), which transferred to St Ann’s Warehouse and the West End, The Great Wave by Francis Turnly, in a co-production with the National Theatre, White Teeth, Zadie Smith’s Kilburn epic in a musical adaptation for the stage by Stephen Sharkey and Paul Englishby, and Florian Zeller’s The Son “A devastating visceral impact” Telegraph, Feb 2019, which transfers to the Duke of York’s Theatre in Autumn 2019.

KILN CINEMA

Our 300-seat cinema shows the best art-house and mainstream films alongside festivals and special Q&A screenings. Recent partners have included: NT Live; Globe on Screen; BFI London Film Festival; Images of Black Women Film Festival; DocHouse; Kilburn Film Festival.

FUNDING

Our annual turnover is approximately £3.5 million. Kiln Theatre receives funding from the Arts Council England as a National Portfolio Organisation. Other income comes from box office ticket sales and other revenue streams, with a final sum generated through fundraising.

THE ROLE

Term: Fixed Term – 12 Months

At this significant moment for Kiln Theatre, almost 1 year on from re-opening and in anticipation of next year’s Brent London Borough of Culture 2020, we are recruiting a Project Coordinator for ‘The Agency’.

Purpose The Agency is a collaborative project directed at engaging and empowering young people aged 15-25 within local communities to plan, structure and deliver their own projects. Using a methodology developed for working with young people living below the poverty line in Brazil, the project provides development opportunities for young people in the UK, helping them to launch social enterprises and ambitious projects that positively impact the local area.

This is an exciting opportunity to take a leading role in this celebrated social change programme, working in a lively and creative environment at Kiln Theatre with opportunities to grow and make the role your own. The Project Coordinator role is responsible for recruiting young people from Brent onto the project, managing ‘The Agency’ freelance staff contracted to deliver work within the Borough and supporting the young people throughout the project. The Project Coordinator is responsible to the Creative Engagement Director for the successful delivery of ‘The Agency’, in line with the terms of Kiln Theatre’s agreement with BAC and the Mayor’s Office.

Key Responsibilities and Duties To deliver confident and comprehensive coordination, budgetary control, relationship building and evaluation skills for the effective delivery of ‘The Agency’ project.

 Maintain a strong relationship with Battersea Arts Centre’s Senior Producer for The Agency and LBOC’s Young People’s Producer, to facilitate effective and excellent communication between all parties regarding ongoing project developments  Be responsible for the recruitment and retention of young people on the project, ensuring 3

their pastoral needs are met throughout  Recruitment and line management of ‘The Agency’ facilitation team including Lead Facilitators and Peer Mentors  Develop successful partnerships with organisations and individuals from across the community including voluntary, public and community organisations, schools, youth clubs and other arts organisations that will support the work of ‘The Agency’  Ensure the provision of budgeted resources for projects, such as space, equipment and materials are provided  Be responsible for the management of and reporting on ‘The Agency’ project budget  Ensure that monthly financial reports are completed and shared with Creative Engagement Director and Executive Director.  Ensure that periodic project spend updates are prepared and submitted to BAC in line with terms of Kiln Theatre’s agreement with BAC and the Mayor’s Office  Work with and facilitate the independent evaluator to monitor and evaluate ‘The Agency’ in line with the evaluation framework  Support Kiln Theatre’s Creative Engagement events which engage the local community.

Administration and Communication To ensure effective and comprehensive administrative and communication systems are maintained.  Use and where needed create office systems to ensure thorough planning, tracking and evaluation of projects is achieved  In conjunction with Kiln Theatre’s Marketing and Communications team, organise marketing and publicity material for ‘The Agency’, working with other Agency partners  Keep Kiln Theatre colleagues both in Creative Engagement department and whole organization updated on the progress and highlights of the project

Creative Development and Delivery To create innovative and engaging outreach work to develop the project.  Deliver outreach work in relation to ‘The Agency’ project, targeting groups of young people from the engagement areas identified  Support the wellbeing of the young people during the project  Generate and deploy new ways of reaching and working with and engaging a diverse range of young people  Take a leadership role in the delivery of workshops for young people where necessary  Work collaboratively with ‘The Agency’ team in developing new and exciting methods to engage young people within the workshops

General To maintain knowledge and communication for the effective delivery of the project. • Keep up to date with developments within the arts and youth culture  Represent Kiln Theatre and ‘The Agency’ at external events as required  Establish and maintain good working relationships with all partner organisations  Respect and adhere to the Health & Safety policy, undertaking duties as required and 4

ensuring that reasonable care is taken to maintain a healthy and safe place for public and staff  Actively commit to the Equal Opportunities policy and Safeguarding of Young People policy

Organisation  Ensure company policies and procedures and statutory regulations are met and all activity undertaken is legally compliant  Project Coordinator role will require handling, processing and recording of restricted information, so confidentiality and strict adherence to Kiln Theatre’s Data policies is required at all times

Person Specification

Essential  A minimum of 2 years project management experience, managing participatory projects.  Experience of delivering creative participatory projects in community settings.  Experience of working with culturally diverse communities  Experience of and enthusiasm for engaging young people through outreach work.  Experience of working with young people who may have complex needs or challenging behaviour.  An understanding and vision of how participatory activities can provide positive benefits for young people with different needs and abilities.  Strong organisational skills, with experience of managing complex budgets.  Skilled in facilitating workshops and sessions with young people.  Experience of providing pastoral care and support to young people.  Strong written skills including the ability to articulate the impact of projects on participants and to write project plans, reports and evaluations; public speaking/presentation.  Ability to work under pressure, sometimes unsupervised and under your own initiative.  Ability to operate collaboratively and with diplomacy, tact and empathy with young people, colleagues and a range of internal and external stakeholders.  Availability to work some evenings and weekends.

Desirable  Versatile communication skills and ability to work with a range of young people, staff, artists, organisations, community groups and visiting companies.  Proficient IT skills including Microsoft Office software  Knowledge of digital marketing and social media  Willingness to represent The Agency and speak at events regionally, nationally and internationally.

Terms and Conditions

Salary: £27,000 pro rata (£16,200 for 3 days per week)

Term: Fixed term: September 2019-September 2020 (start date: 2 September 2019)

Contract: Part-time with an average of 24 hours per week (Creative Engagement office hours are 10 am – 6 pm but mid-week evening work and earlier starts will sometimes be essential).

Probation period: 3 months, followed by a review by the Creative Engagement Director

Holiday entitlement: 20 days per year plus bank holidays (pro rata’d for part-time contract)

Pension: Kiln Theatre operates an auto-enrolment pension scheme for all employees. Kiln’s contribution is capped at 3% of basic salary.

Current delivery partners include: National Theatre Wales and Fablab Belfast. It is currently funded by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund and the Mayor of London.

The Agency at Kiln Theatre is part of the London Borough of Culture 2020. London Borough of Culture is a Mayor of London initiative, supported by the City of London Corporation’s charity and City Bridge Trust.

The Agency is a programme originally conceived by Marcus Faustini in Rio de Janeiro where it is delivered by Agência de Redes para a Juventude. The UK pilot (2013-15) was funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
