The Festival is an opportunity for performers to try out their skills in the wonderful setting of Cheltenham Town Hall or in the tranquillity of Bethesda Church. There are classes for all ages and ability and some for those of you who just want to ‘have a go’. Please have a look through the Syllabus at this year’s classes. Late entries will only be accepted after the closing date under special circumstances, at the discretion of the Section Secretary, and may be subject to an additional fee. The entry fee is for the performer. Spectators who wish to watch a performance will be asked to pay £3 for an entry ticket which can be used for the full day and at any venue. Alternatively, becoming a Friend enables entry to the full Festival. (See Page 52). Tickets will be available from the Town Hall Box Office. Entry Closing Date: 11:59pm on 1st February 2018. Titles of “Own Choice” music must be announced. M2. An original score of music, not a photocopy, of an own choice piece must be in the room. A copy of own choice music must be handed to the adjudicator at the beginning of the class, and in the “Set Piece” Classes the prescribed edition and key, where specified, must be used. Failure to do either of these will mean that the Performer will receive an adjudication but no mark. See also copyright rules on page 49. M3. Time limits must be strictly adhered to. Performers who over-run will be penalised by the loss of one mark per minute or part of a minute. M4. Performers in “Own Choice” Classes may not offer items with which they have already won prizes in Cheltenham Festivals in the past 3 years, nor may they enter the same piece in more than one Class. M5. Performers may not enter more than once in a Class unless specified. M6. Entrants are advised that the Festival no longer engages official accompanists. Please see page 48 for further information. M8. Backing Tracks whether CD, Tape or other media are not allowed unless specifically allowed for a Class. M9. Performer’s Age is reckoned as on 31st August 2017 and will be strictly observed M10 SONGS FROM THE SHOWS: Performers are reminded that due to Performing Rights no costume or scenery may be used. Movement is allowed. M11. For music classes split into ‘a’ and ‘b’ sets: Each set will be adjudicated with 1st, 2nd, 3rd places and medals. Only one cup will be awarded overall. 1 Choral CHOIRS SECRETARY Martyn Fry Adjudicator - Amy Bebbington Amy is a passionate advocate for choral singing and choral conductor training. She is sought after for her dynamic and engaging teaching style, and her wealth of choral pedagogical experience. She holds degrees in piano performance and a Doctorate in choral conducting. She is the Director of Training for ABCD. She has worked at the RCM and currently leads the Licentiate Diploma Course (Choral Conducting) at the RAM. She was course Director for the NYCGB course this Spring and is a regular Musicianship Tutor for them. Amy recently worked with the RCO and AOIC sharing the art of choral leadership with organists and singers. She has established her own choral conducting masterclass series, and has worked on BBC2’s The Choir: Sing While You Work. Amy is in great demand as a choral clinician, mentor, adjudicator and teacher and is currently Musical Director for Dorking Camerata, Holmbury Choral Society and Nota Bene. *Please note new timings for some classes* C01 Choral Societies or Mixed Voice Choirs – minimum 20 voices – adult £20.00 choirs. The Programme must contain at least one unaccompanied item. Minimum of three pieces. The choice of programme will be considered in the adjudication. (12 mins) C02 Male Voice Choirs – minimum 20 voices – adult choirs. As C01. £20.00 C03 Female Voice Choirs –- minimum 20 voices – adult choirs. As C01. £20.00 C04 Sacred Music – Any combination of voices. Two contrasting items £20.00 with a minimum of two parts and containing at least one unaccompanied item. Choice of programme will be considered in adjudication. (8 mins) C05 Folk Song – Any combination of voices. A programme of two £20.00 contrasting folk song arrangements, not necessarily British, with a minimum of two parts and containing at least one unaccompanied item. Choice of programme will be considered in adjudication. (8 mins) 2 C07 Choirs – Any combination of voices. Winners in any previous £20.00 Cheltenham Festival excluded. Own choice – two contrasting items – not less than two parts in at least one item. (8 mins) C08 Youth Choirs – Any combination of voices. Own Choice. Two £20.00 contrasting songs, one in at least three parts. (8 mins) *See also new class C11* C09 Songs from the Shows – Any combination of voices. Can be separate £20.00 items or a medley. (10 mins) C10 Community Choirs or Rock Choirs – Any combination of voices. Two £20.00 contrasting pieces. Non-competitive class with adjudication comments (8 mins) C11 Youth Choirs – Any combination of voices. A non-competitive class. £20.00 Own Choice. Two contrasting songs, one in at least three parts. (8 mins) Choral Day Awards Saturday 13th May 2017 THE GOLD CUP (Classes C1, C2, C3) originally donated by the late Mr. A. N. Price will be awarded to the choir from the Adult Choir Classes which in the opinion of the adjudicator gave the most memorable performance. THE SILVER PLATE will be awarded to the Youth Choir which in the opinion of the adjudicator gave the most memorable performance. 3 Vocal Adjudicator – Janet Shell Janet’s background is in education and she was a music teacher for 5 years before retraining at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She was the first Mezzo to be taken on by YCAT and the first person to sing live on Classic FM. In Opera, she has worked for ENO, WNO and ROH and has performed many opera galas for celebrated events, including for the Spice Girls following the christening of Geri Halliwell’s first child and singing at the first Royal Wedding at Hampton Court Palace in 500 years! It is in Oratorio and Recital, however, that she has become particularly known, winning prizes in Pair for French song early in her career. Janet is in demand as a singing teacher and has recently taken on the post of singing tutor at Reading University alongside her other tutoring. Janet continues to sing but is becoming increasingly known as an adjudicator and choir trainer, working with choral directors to help achieve healthy and confident choral singing. Adjudicator – Veronica Veysey-Campbell Veronica Veysey-Campbell is a vocal professor at the Royal College of Music. She has a wide range of teaching experience having taught at the University of Cambridge, the St Paul’s Cathedral Choristers, for the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, the Royal College of Music Junior department and through her own private studio and masterclasses. She co-directs the vocal course at MusicFest Aberystwyth and gives talks and lectures. She has compiled and edited two books of songs with Liza Hobbs “Everlasting Voices”, is a collection of songs for older singers, recently published by Peters Edition. This follows “Changing Voices” a ground-breaking book of songs for teenage boys. Veronica studied at Trinity College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama winning many prizes at both institutions. She was a finalist in the Kathleen Ferrier Memorial Scholarship competition and was awarded the Worshipful Company of Musicians’ Medal. As a soloist she gave many recitals, oratorio and concert performances in venues such as Wigmore Hall and Snape Maltings and made appearance 4 Junior Vocal *PLEASE NOTE that all set pieces must use the prescribed edition and key.
