It includes Arabic, Ottoman, Persian, Pakistan and Indian calligraphy.It is known in Arabic as khatt Islami , meaning Islamic line, design, or construction. The development of Islamic calligraphy is strongly tied to the Qur'an; chapters and excerpts from the Qur'an are a common and almost universal text upon which Islamic calligraphy is based. However, Islamic calligraphy is not limited to strictly religious subjects, objects, or spaces. Like all Islamic art, it encompasses a diverse array of works created in a wide variety of contexts. -

(1984 CE) by His Royal Highness King Fahd bin ‘Abd al-Aziz Al Sa’ud (may Allah have mercy upon him) Qur’an Printing Complex quickly became one of the most eminent institutions that are related not only to the propagation of Qur’anic knowledge, but to Islamic Affairs in general. The main goal of our article is to explore how the Qur’an Printing Complex obtained its highest position in Islamic world and which efforts, with the help of Allah the Almighty, were made by the wise government of Al Sa’ud and Islamic scholars from the Kingdom on the way to these achievements. MOBILIZING MUSLIM RELIGIOUS LEADERS FOR REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND FAMILY PLANNING AT THE COMMUNITY LEVEL Mobilizing Muslim Religious Leaders for Reproductive Health and Family Planning at the Community Level: A Training Manual 2 Acknowledgements Mobilizing Muslim Religious Leaders for Reproductive Health and Family Planning at the Community Level: A Training Manual is the product of several individuals at Extending Service Delivery (ESD) project. ESD would like to thank the key authors of this manual including Jennifer Mason, Leah Sawalha Freij, Pauline Muhuhu, Cate Lane, and Elsa Berhane. Jennifer Mason drafted the first version of this manual based on Pathfinder’s training manual Training Islamiyya School Teachers in Reproductive Health . Leah Freij mainstreamed gender into the manual and synthesized the various Islamic interpretations related to reproductive health/family planning and gender relations. Cate Lane developed the youth and leadership sections. Pauline Muhuhu consolidated the final draft of this manuscript into its existing form. Elsa Berhane oversaw the entire process including the write up of the overview and introduction, updating the various versions of the manual, coordinating all contributions and responding to USAID’s recommendations. This manuscript would not have been possible without the help of Tayseer Abdel-Razig who ensured that Islamic interpretations were accurate, provide the team with most appropriate ahadiths (sayings of the Prophet) and Qur’anic verses. ESD also recognizes the role of Cathy Solter and Mustafa Kudrati for their reviews of the early drafts. This manual originated from a training course developed in Arabic by Nasser Mahmoud El Kholy for religious leaders in Egypt under the CATALYST project and in Yemen under Basic Health Services Project. -

This translation of the Qur’an has been the focus of a number of studies that scrutinise it from different angles. Yet, there has been no thoughtful study dedicated to investigate the issue of Pickthall’s translation of the Qur’anic surahs’ names. Utilising the Contrastive Analysis approach as a theoretical framework, this study aims to fill this gap by assessing the accuracy of the equivalents provided by Pickthall to the 114 Qur’anic surahs’ names. The study consists of an introduction and five sections. It gives a succinct description of the Qur’anic surahs’ names, pinpoints the major features of Pickthall’s translation of the Qur’an, details his own approach in handling the Qur’anic surahs’ names, and analytically discusses the difficulties he encountered when rendering such vital terms of the Qur’an into English. -

chapter 6 Pickthall, Ottomanism, and Modern Turkey Geoffrey P. Nash If the East became the great love of Pickthall’s life from the moment he set foot on Egyptian soil in 1894, it wasn’t until the outbreak of the Ottoman consti- tutional revolution in 1908 that this love took on an intense political focus. In this essay I intend to distinguish the factors that differentiate Pickthall’s early travels in Egypt-Syria-Palestine, the key experience behind his subsequent fic- tional representation of Arabs, from the impulse that led to a decade or more of political and religious struggle on behalf of Ottoman Turkey. Turning points in Pickthall’s love affair with the East, other than the two just mentioned, in- cluded the success of his first oriental novel, Saïd the Fisherman (1903); his public declaration of Islam in 1917; and the defeat of Turkey and fall of the Young Turks in 1918. If, as Peter Clark argued, writings such as The Valley of the Kings and Oriental Encounters demonstrate Pickthall’s awareness of a nascent Arab nationalism,1 The Early Hours, his retrospective novelistic paean to the cause of the Young Turk revolution which did not appear until 1921, re-creates his belief in the destiny of the Turks to bring about a renovation of Islam. This chapter sets out to demonstrate not so much Pickthall’s passionate engage- ment with and anger and bitterness at the eventual defeat of the Young Turks and their project for Turkey – the entire range of his articles in New Age amply demonstrate that – as the manner in which his early immersion in Arab and Islamic subjects in his fiction gave way to the creation of a discourse almost wholly centred on Ottoman Turkey’s aspiration toward taking its place in mod- ern civilisation underscored by a renewed Islam. -

Arzt* INTRODUCTION The Qur'anic pronouncement, "there is no compulsion in religion" (Sura 2, verse 256), is as succinct a statement as any of the principle of freedom of religion. This freedom has been said to encompass not only the freedom to hold theistic beliefs as well as the freedom to hold non-theistic beliefs, but also the freedom to change one's religion or belief or to refuse to change one's religion or belief, all without coercion or discrimination.' In other words, an assertion of non-compulsion is put to the test when con- fronted by instances of conversion to and from the religion in question. -

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful The Meaning of the Glorious Quran by Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall (born Marmaduke William Pickthall, 7 April 1875 – 19 May 1936) was a Western Islamic scholar noted for his English translation of the Qur'an (1930). A convert from Christianity, Pickthall was a novelist, as well as a journalist, a teacher, and political and religious leader. He declared his conversion to Islam after delivering a talk on 'Islam and Progress' on 29 November 1917, to the Muslim Literary Society in Notting Hill, West London. Pickthall travelled across many Eastern countries, gaining a reputation as a Middle-Eastern scholar before declaring his faith as a Muslim, Pickthall was a strong ally of the Ottoman Empire. He studied the Orient, and published articles and novels on the subject. While in the service of the Nizam of Hyderabad, Pickthall published his English translation of the Qur'an with the title “The Meaning of the Glorious Quran”. The translation was authorized by the Al-Azhar University and the Times Literary Supplement praised his efforts by writing "noted translator of the glorious Quran into English language, a great literary achievement. In 1920, he went to India with his wife to serve as editor of the Bombay Chronicle, returning to England in 1935, a year before his death at St Ives, Cornwall. It was in India that he completed his famous translation, The Meaning of the Glorious Quran. Pickthall was buried in the Muslim section at Brookwood Cemetery in Surrey, England. For this project, The Meaning of the Glorious Quran by Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall was entirely reviewed and revised at Evergreen Islamic Center, San Jose, CA. -
