Back Cover 45 February 2020 | MeeTurkey | 5 NEWSLINE TURKEY Turkish Tourism Breaks Record in 2019 Turkey hosted a record number of visitors and its tourism income reached a new record high in 2019, the country’s statistical authority announced. In 2019, the number of travelers visiting Turkey increased by 13.7% compared to the previous year and reached to 51 million 860 thousand 42. While 86.2% of visitors was foreign with 44 million 712 thousand 970 persons, 13.8% of them was Turkish citizens resident abroad with 7 million 147 thousand 72 persons. Tourism income in 2019 increased by 17.0% and reached to $ 34 billion 520 million 332 thousand compared to the previous year. While individual expenditures constituted $ 25 billion 355 million 577 thousand of the total tourism income, $ 9 billion 164 million 755 thousand of tourism income was obtained by package tour expenditures. In the fourth quarter which is October, November and December months of 2019 tourism income increased by 20.6% and reached to $ 7 billion 885 million 568 thousand. While 83.3% of this income (excluding GSM roaming and marina service expenditures) was obtained from foreign visitors, 16.7% was obtained from citizens resident abroad. Visitors organized their travel individually or with package tour. While individual expenditures constituted $ 5 billion 804 million 853 thousand of the total tourism income, $ 2 billion 80 million 715 thousand of tourism income was obtained by package tour expenditures. In this quarter, according to rate of change of expenditures compared to same quarter of the previous year, the highest increases were in package tour (share of Turkey) and tour services expenditures. In this year the highest annual increases were in package tour (share of Turkey) and health expenditures. In this quarter while average expenditure per night of the foreigners who stayed overnight was $ 73, average expenditure per night of Turkish citizens resident abroad was $ 35. In this year, while average expenditure per night for total overnight visitors was $ 68, the average expenditure per night of foreigners was $ 73, average expenditure per night of Turkish citizens resident abroad was $ 50. 6 | MeeTurkey | February 2020 Izmir Tourism Breaks Record in 2019 The number of travelers visiting Turkey’s Aegean city of Izmir increased 17 percent in 2019 compared to 2018 and break its all-time record. According to a special report by Aegean Touristic Enterprises and Accommodation Union (ETİK), the total number of tourists visiting Izmir accounted for 1,975,187 in 2019. While the number of foreign visitors increased by 20 percent (1,224,634), the number of citizen visitors (750,553) increased by 13 percent. In January-December 2019, Izmir tourism increased in markets other than Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Moldova, Lithuania, Finland, and Georgia. The ten countries that sent the most tourists to Izmir were Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Iran, France, Belgium, Poland, Greece, Russia, and Ukraine. Federation of Turkish Hoteliers (TUROFED) Vice President and President of ETIK; Mr. Mehmet İşler said, “Izmir tourism, which shrank in 2016 and 2017, recovered in 2018 and grew by 17 percent in 2019 compared to the previous year, continues to advance on its growth path. By welcoming a total of 1 million 975 thousand 187 visitors Izmir tourism set a new record,”. Stating that the number of visitors coming to İzmir is approaching 2 million without cruise tourists, İşler added, “With the election of Mr. Tunç Soyer as the mayor of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, there is a vigorous activity. Mobility has taken the place of inertia in Izmir tourism. If it continues in this way, breaking new records in the number of tourist arrivals won’t be a surprise.” Turkish Airports Handled 209 Million Passengers in 2019 Turkish State Airports Authority (DHMI) announced aircraft, passenger and freight statistics for 2019. DHMI said that a total of 209,092,548 passengers are handled by airports in Turkey in 2019. Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Cahit Turhan said that during December 2019, the total number of aircraft landing and taking off at airports was 62 thousand 442 in domestic and 43 thousand 890 in international flights. The total aircraft traffic reported as 144 thousand 724. In December 2019, total domestic passenger traffic at airports recorded at February 2020 | MeeTurkey | 7 NEWSLINE TURKEY 7 million 298 thousand 489 and international passenger traffic recorded at 6 million 164 thousand 431. Turhan said with the addition of both direct and transit passenger numbers, total passenger traffic accounted for 13,474,156. During January-December 2019, total aircraft movement in Turkish airports accounted for 839,850 in domestic and 713,651 in international flights. The total aircrafts served accounted for 2,030,291 aircraft. In 2019, domestic passenger number is recorded as 100,140,814 while international passenger number is recorded as 108,692,517.
