Generating a New Image for Cultural Heritage: Model for Preserving the Typical Image of the Traditional Turkish Coffeehouse
Sustainability Today 401 Generating a new image for cultural heritage: model for preserving the typical image of the traditional Turkish coffeehouse N. Ayalp & A. Müge Bozday TOBB University, Turkey Abstract The aim of the study is to create a model for a reusing a specific cultural setting. Traditional Turkish coffeehouses are selected as a traditional environment. The coffeehouse, which has been used in Turkey since the sixteenth century, is one of the most significant places in the country’s cultural heritage. Coffeehouses are one of the public spaces that represent the place identity of Turkish culture. During the Ottoman period, with their frequent use, people helped these places gain place identities. Moreover, not just the space but the ways in which people become socialized represent an intangible part of our cultural heritage. However, previous studies indicate that this cultural value has not been sufficiently transferred to the present day. This study identifies the traditional Turkish coffeehouse as contributing to both tangible and intangible cultural heritage and generates a model for interpreting the coffeehouse in terms of a contemporary place identity. In order to do this, the concept of place, place identity, and social identity is discussed. Turkish coffeehouses are analyzed to identify and their typical spatial elements. In the conclusion, a model for preserving the typical image of the traditional Turkish coffeehouse is presented. Keywords: traditional Turkish coffeehouses, place, place identity, social identity, typical elements in Turkish coffeehouses’ interiors. 1 Introduction: discussion of Turkish coffeehouses within a conceptual framework In order to safeguard a place that has a cultural value, it is not sufficient to discuss just its material attributes. -

THE MYTH of 'TERRIBLE TURK' and 'LUSTFUL TURK' Nevs
THE WESTERN IMAGE OF TURKS FROM THE MIDDLE AGES TO THE 21ST CENTURY: THE MYTH OF ‘TERRIBLE TURK’ AND ‘LUSTFUL TURK’ Nevsal Olcen Tiryakioglu A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of Nottingham Trent University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2015 Copyright Statement This work is the intellectual property of the author. Because of their fear of being dominated by Islam, European Christians defined the Turks as the wicked ‘Other’ against their perfect ‘Self.’ Since the beginning of Crusades, the Western image of Turks is associated with cruelty, barbarity, murderousness, immorality, and sexual perversion. These characteristics still appear in cinematic representations of Turks. In Western films such as Lawrence of Arabia and Midnight Express, the portrayals of Turks echo the stereotypes of ‘terrible Turk’ and ‘lustful Turk.’ This thesis argues that these stereotypes have transformed into a myth and continued to exist uniformly in Western contemporary cinema. The thesis attempts to ascertain the uniformity and consistency of the cinematic image of Turks and determine the associations between this image and the myths of ‘terrible Turk’ and ‘lustful Turk.’ To achieve this goal, this thesis examines the trajectory of the Turkish image in Western discourse between the 11th and 21st centuries. -
Women and Power: Female Patrons of Architecture in 16Th and 17Th Century Istanbul1
Women and Power: Female Patrons of Architecture in 16th and 17th Century Istanbul1 Firuzan Melike Sümertas ̧ Anadolu University, Eskisehir, ̧ TÜRKlYE ̇ The aim of this paper is to discuss and illustrate the visibility of Ottoman imperial women in relation to their spatial presence and contribution to the architecture and cityscape of sixteenth and seventeenth century Istanbul. The central premise of the study is that the Ottoman imperial women assumed and exercised power and influence by various means but became publicly visible and acknowledged more through architectural patronage. The focus is on Istanbul and a group of buildings and complexes built under the sponsorship of court women who resided in the Harem section of Topkapı Palace. The case studies built in Istanbul in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries are examined in terms of their location in the city, the layout of the complexes, the placement and plan of the individual buildings, their orientation, mass characteristics and structural properties. It is discussed whether female patronage had any recognizable consequences on the Ottoman Classical Architecture, and whether female patrons had any impact on the building process, selection of the site and architecture. These complexes, in addition, are discussed as physical manifestation and representation of imperial female power. Accordingly it is argued that, they functioned not only as urban regeneration projects but also as a means to enhance and make imperial female identity visible in a monumental scale to large masses in different parts of the capital. Introduction Historical study, since the last quarter of the 20th The study first summarizes outlines the role of women century has concentrated on recognizing, defining, in the Ottoman society. -
