The Historical Roots and Identities of Local Strongmen Groups in Indonesia
The Historical Roots and Identities of Local Strongmen Groups in Indonesia Yanwar Pribadi 1 Abstract This paper deals with the historical roots and identities, nature and characteristics of local strongmen groups in Indonesia, and aspects of violence in Indonesia. In the rural colonial Java, there were rampok-bandits and jago groups; whereas today in Banten there are jawara groups and elsewhere in Indonesia people commonly recognized preman groups. In this paper I will focus on these four groups: rampok-bandits (or bandits), jago, jawara, and preman. These groups are parts of the long-established strongmen groups that have characterized Indonesian history. Among the questions addressed are: what is the origin and what are the characteristics of local strongmen groups in society? How does violence embody in the way of life of local strongmen groups? What is their position in society? How do they characterize local cultures in their place of origin? Keywords: Rampok-bandits, Jago, Jawara, Preman, Violence "Saya seorang jawara" (I am a jawara) -Tubagus Chasan Sochib (Tempo Interaktif, 3 December 2007) A. Introduction Perhaps there is no such bold and outspoken public figure in Banten after the collapse of the Suharto administration besides Tubagus Chasan Sochib. He was a successful tycoon and a legendary figure in the jawara world in Banten, who happened to be the father of Ratu Atut Chosiyah, a former of Banten. This paper deals with the historical roots and identities, nature and characteristics of local strongmen groups in Indonesia, and aspects of violence in Indonesia. Coffee Economy in Late Colonial Netherlands East Indies: Estates and Capital, 1890–1940
Volume 13 Number 1 ISSN: Page April 2017 1410-4962 5—27 Coffee Economy in Late Colonial Netherlands East Indies: Estates and Capital, 1890–1940 DIAS PRADADIMARA Universitas Hasanuddin Abstract This paper provides an attempt to look at the coffee economy in late colonial Keywords: Netherlands East Indies, by focusing on the private estates that produced coffee coffee; and on the capital-owning class who invested in these estates. Since mid-19th estates; century there was an increasing accessibility for would-be planters to gain access capital; to land, especially in Java and Sumatra. Attracted to the increasing, if volatile, the planters world price of the commodity, coffee-producing estates were established in great numbers across the archipelago, despite the threat of the coffee leaf rust plant- disease. Only the attraction to rubber planting and the economic crisis in the 1930s dampened the enthusiasm. At the same time, the individual planters and Indies- based companies who controlled most of the coffee producing estates in the late 19th century were gradually replaced by incorporated companies both based in the Indies and in the Netherlands. The increasing flow of capital following the rubber boom in the early 20th century made the role of individual planters and Indies- based companies declined further. Identity, Minority, and the Idea of a Nation: a Closer Look at Frieda (1951) by Dr
Vol. 1 Journal of Korean and Asian Arts SPRING 2020 Identity, Minority, and the Idea of a Nation: a Closer Look at Frieda (1951) by Dr. Huyung Umi Lestari / Universitas Multimedia Nusantara 【Abstract】 The discourse on film nasional (national film) in Indonesia always started by bringing up Darah dan Doa (1950, Blood and Prayer) as the foundation of the Indonesian film industry. The prominent film historian, Misbach Yusa Biran, stated that Darah dan Doa was produced with national consciousness value. The legacy of Darah dan Doa was not only neglecting the role of filmmakers from pre-Independence in Indonesia but also the role of other filmmakers during the 1950s, including Dr. Huyung. Previously, Dr. Huyung (Hinatsu Eitaro /Hŏ Yŏng) came from Korea and became a supporter of Imperial Japan during World War II. After Indonesia gained her independence, Huyung joined Berita Film Indonesia and became a film teacher at the Cine Drama Institute and Kino Drama Atelier. It was there that they then went on to make Frieda (1951), Bunga Rumah Makan (1951, The Flower of the Restaurant), Kenangan Masa (1951, Memories of the Past), and Gadis Olahraga (1951, the Sportswoman). This article discusses 'unity in diversity', a concept in filmmaking that was started by Huyung in 1949. When discussing Darah and Doa as the first film nasional, people forget that the film is driven from the military perspective. Meanwhile, Huyung tried to represent an ethnic minority in Frieda and showing that the ordinary people and the intellectuals also shaped the nation. Based on his experience in the Japanese army and Berita Film Indonesia, Huyung understood that film was very useful in achieving the goals of the state apparatus, due to the cinema's ability to spread nationalism. -

Ismail et al. Journal of Ethnic Foods (2021) 8:19 Journal of Ethnic Foods https://doi.org/10.1186/s42779-021-00095-3 REVIEW ARTICLE Open Access The Malay’s traditional sweet, dodol:a review of the Malaysia’s heritage delicacy alongside with the rendition of neighbouring countries Norsyahidah Ismail1, Muhammad Shahrim Ab. Karim1* , Farah Adibah Che Ishak1, Mohd Mursyid Arsyad2, Supatra Karnjamapratum3 and Jiraporn Sirison3 Abstract The Malaysia’s cultural heritage is authentic, unique and colourful with various local cuisines of different races and cultures. It is mainly originated from the Malay culture being the largest ethnic group in the country. The Malays themselves have contributed to many local cuisines ranging from appetiser, soup, main course and dessert. However, some Malay heritage foods have almost been forgotten and jeopardized in quality. This is especially happening to the Malay sweets or desserts which have gradually become less appealing to the younger generations. They are not even familiar with Malay foods, let alone consuming them. Among the popular Malay heritage foods in Malaysia are lemang, ketupat, rendang, wajik and dodol. Dodol specifically has been listed as one of the endangered heritage foods in Malaysia. Preserving the Malay cuisines is part of sustaining the Malay culture and this should begin with a great amount of knowledge and understanding about any elements within the culture itself. This article highlights a nostalgic and evergreen Malay’s traditional sweet, known by the locals as dodol by discussing its history, different types and names of dodol, as well as the recipes, preparation, cooking methods and packaging. -
U. Bosma, 'Het Cultuurstelsel En Zijn Buitenlandse Ondernemers. Java
Ulbe Bosma HET CULTUURSTELSEL EN ZIJN BUITENLANDSE ONDERNEMERS1 Java tussen oud en nieuw kolonialisme The Dutch state cultivation system and its global entrepreneurs. Java be- tween old and new colonialism Since the reign of lieutenant governor-general Stamford Raffles (1811-1816) British trading interests had been firmly established in colonial Indonesia. The establishment of the cultivation system in Java by the Dutch colonial govern- ment in 1830 was an attempt to bring the potentially rich colony under economic control of the Dutch. It is also considered to be a departure from the principles of economic liberalism and a phase in which private entrepreneurs were barred from the emerging plantation economy. On the basis of census data and immi- gration records, and with reference to recent literature on the development of nineteenth century sugar industry, this article argues that British trading houses that were present in Java in the early nineteenth century continued to play an important role in the development of the production of tropical products in Java. They also attracted a modest influx of British technicians to manage the estates. The article proposes to consider the state Cultivation System and private enter- prise not as mutually exclusive categories but as complementory factors in mak- ing the Java cane sugar industry the second largest in the world after Cuba. -

The Practice of Pencak Silat in West Java
The Politics of Inner Power: The Practice of Pencak Silat in West Java By Ian Douglas Wilson Ph.D. Thesis School of Asian Studies Murdoch University Western Australia 2002 Declaration This is my own account of the research and contains as its main content, work which has not been submitted for a degree at any university Signed, Ian Douglas Wilson Abstract Pencak silat is a form of martial arts indigenous to the Malay derived ethnic groups that populate mainland and island Southeast Asia. Far from being merely a form of self- defense, pencak silat is a pedagogic method that seeks to embody particular cultural and social ideals within the body of the practitioner. The history, culture and practice of pencak in West Java is the subject of this study. As a form of traditional education, a performance art, a component of ritual and community celebrations, a practical form of self-defense, a path to spiritual enlightenment, and more recently as a national and international sport, pencak silat is in many respects unique. It is both an integrative and diverse cultural practice that articulates a holistic perspective on the world centering upon the importance of the body as a psychosomatic whole. Changing socio-cultural conditions in Indonesia have produced new forms of pencak silat. Increasing government intervention in pencak silat throughout the New Order period has led to the development of nationalized versions that seek to inculcate state-approved values within the body of the practitioner. Pencak silat groups have also been mobilized for the purpose of pursuing political aims. Some practitioners have responded by looking inwards, outlining a path to self-realization framed by the powers, flows and desires found within the body itself. -
