Promoting Saint Ronans Well: Scotts Fiction and Scottish Community in Transition MATSUI Yuko The Author of Waverley, with his various personas, is a highly sociable and com- municative writer, as we observe in the frequent and lively exchanges between the author and his reader or characters in the conclusions of Old Mortality1816 and Redgauntlet1824 , or in the prefaces to The Abbot1820 and The Betrothed1825 , to give only a few examples. Walter Scott himself, after giving up his anonymity, seems to enjoy an intimate author-reader relationship in his prefaces and notes to the Magnum Opus edition. Meanwhile, Scott often adapts and combines more than one historical event or actual person, his sources or originals, in his attempt to recre- ate the life of a particular historical period and give historical sense to it, as books like W. S. Crocketts The Scott Originals1912 eloquently testify, and with the Porteous Riot and Helen Walker in The Heart of Midlothian1818 as one of the most obvious examples. Both of these characteristics often tend to encourage an active interaction between the real and the imagined, or their confluence, within and outwith Scott's historical fiction, perhaps most clearly shown in the development of tourism in 19th century Scotland1. In the case of Saint Ronan’s Well1824 [1823], Scotts only novel set in the 19th century, its contemporaneity seems to have allowed that kind of interaction and confluence to take its own vigorous form, sometimes involving an actual commu- nity or other authors of contemporary Scotland. Thus, we would like to examine here the ways in which Scott adapts his sources to explore his usual interest in historical change in this contemporary fiction and how it was received, particularly in terms of its effect on a local community in Scotland and in terms of its inspiration for his fellow authors, and thus reconsider the part played by Scotts fiction in imagining and pro- moting Scotland in several ways, in present and past Scotland. -

The following pages have been published chiefly for those who take an interest in the locality of the ancient and now flourishing town of Arbroath, and also with the view of removing the obscurity which has hitherto involved the history of its once magnificent monasteiy. Among other sources of information the Chartulary of the Abbey is entitled to stand first in rank. The most interesting portions of these monastic writings have been digested and arranged in this volume. An endeavour has thus been made to bring out the points in which they, along with other authentic documents, tend to illustrate the history of the district. In alluding to the history of past times, our ancestors have been allowed as far as possible to appear in their own dress, and speak in their own words. This will account for the number of quotations in the antique style, which may probably render the perusal of some portions of the book a little difficult to readers otherwise well educated. -

INTRODUCTION The present work completes a series of fictitious narratives, intended to illustrate the manners of Scotland at three different periods. _Waverley_ embraced the age of our fathers, _Guy Mannering_ that of our own youth, and the _Antiquary_ refers to the last ten years of the eighteenth century. I have, in the two last narratives especially, sought my principal personages in the class of society who are the last to feel the influence of that general polish which assimilates to each other the manners of different nations. -

OLDBUCK AND OCHILTREE: SCOTT, HISTORY, AND THE ANTIQUARY’S DOPPELGÄNGER John Williams Although Jonathan Oldbuck’s first appearance in Sir Walter Scott’s novels is in The Antiquary (1816), he had in fact always been there, the author’s doppelgänger patiently waiting to step out of the shadows. Oldbuck is a principal figure within the private repertory company of authors and antiquaries with whom Scott shared his entire literary career, and it was through the interventions of such fictional voices as Oldbuck, Cleishbotham, Pattieson, Osbaldistone, Dryasdust, Croftangry and Clutterbuck that Scott expressed what Kenneth McNeil describes as the author’s awareness of the “ironic relationship”` between the past and the present.1 To this end, Scott’s novels are grounded from the outset in a creative exploration of the Gothic tropes of double identity, hero/anti-hero, tainted familial relationships (notably between father and son), and shape- shifting; and for all its relative lightness of mood when compared to its close contemporaries, Old Mortality (1816) and Rob Roy (1817), nowhere is this more apparent than in The Antiquary. -

Late Antiquity and the Antiquarian

MACRAE Assistant Professor, University of California, Berkeley Late Antiquity and the Antiquarian ABSTRACT Arnaldo Momigliano, the most influential modern student of antiquarianism, advanced the view that there was a late antique antiquarianism, but also lamented the absence of study of the history of antiquarianism in this period. Part of the challenge, however, has been to define the object of such a study. Rather than “finding” antiquari- anism in late antiquity as Momigliano did, this article argues that a history that offers explicit analogies between late antique evidence and the avowed antiquarianism of early modern Europe allows a more self-conscious and critical history of late antique engagement with the past. The article offers three examples of this form of analysis, comparing practices of statue collecting in Renaissance Rome and thelateRomanWest,learnedtreatiseson the Roman army by Vegetius and Justus Lipsius, and feelings of attachment to a local past as a modern antiquarian stereotype and in a pair of letters to and from Augustine of Hippo. Nigel Leask Although The Antiquary was a personal favourite of Sir Walter Scott’s, he worried that it was more concerned ‘to describe manners minutely, than to arrange…an artificial and combined narration’; and regretted that he had been ‘unable to unite these two requisitions of a good Novel’. 1 Critics have largely endorsed this view, especially when compared to Waverley and Guy Mannering, Scott’s first two novels. Penny Fielding describes The Antiquary as ‘an unhistorical historical novel’, while Ian Duncan notes that for ‘a work composed mere months after Waterloo…[it’s striking that it] unfolds its epiphany of national solidarity through the mock-heroic narration of a conflict that does not take place’. (He refers here to the French invasion scare that turns out to be a false alarm at the novel’s conclusion.) 2 Reflecting on Scott’s sense of imbalance, David Punter suggests that The Antiquary is more concerned with the making of history than with history itself. 3 He describes the rather stagey Gothic plot as a ‘peg on which to hang a series of characters and a set of views on the central issues raised by the cultural phenomenon of the ‘antiquary’, (p.xiv) which seems absolutely right. -

THE LAW AND LAWYERS OF SIR WALTER SCOTT. "If it isna weel bobbit We'll bob it again." Walter Scott occupies a unique position in literature. His fame rests on his poems and novels, but he was also an historian, an antiquarian, a lawyer, a judge and a clerk of the highest Court in Scotland. No less a man than Emerson said that Scott, in the number and variety of his characters, approached Shakespeare, and Scott's flatterers were fond of making a closer comparison, but Scott, himself, with the natural modesty of a Scotchman, and the true self appreciation of a genius, said he was not fit to tie Shakespeare's brogues. He surely could not have written Hamlet, nor indeed could he have written Rabbi ben Ezra, nor yet, In Memoriam; but the Lady of the Lake, Marmion and the Lay of the Last Min- strel, with their smooth verse and charming ballads, have never been equalled. His novels are wonderful. No writer has produced so much that is so uniformly good. He hits the gold every time. Stevenson, no mean critic, called him, "out and away the king of the Roman- tics" and "the best of novelists," but maintains that Scott was wrong in his history, and picks the Lady of the Lake and Guy Mannering to tatters, for their "bad English, bad style, and abominably bad narrative." Macaulay, on the other hand, was amazed by Scott's skilful use of history in his novels. "Scott has used," says Macaulay, "those fragments of truth which his- torians have scornfully thrown behind them, in a manner which may well excite their envy. -

Textually, the edition was, according to the “Editor’s Note,” “a reprint of the magnum opus of 1829-1832,” yet it could also boast such additional materials as introductions to the novels written by Lang himself, as well as supplementary letters and reviews contemporary with the novels’ original publication. By the end of the nineteenth century, there was certainly no shortage of editions of the Waverley Novels to choose from.
