Referaat Jeff Beck Jaan Jaago 8B Geoffrey Arnold Beck sündis 1944. aastal 24. juunil Wallingtonis Surrey`s Inglismaal. Irooniliselt alustas Beck, kes nüüd enam ei laula, kooripoisina. Hiljem võttis ta muusikakoolis klaveritunde, õppides sealjuures mängima ka tšellot. Kord nägi ta üht plakatit ja otsustas kitarri hakata õppima. Ta ehitas omale puukastist kitarri ja värvis selle kollaseks. See oli umbes 11 eluaasta juures. Peale põhihariduse omandamist, läks ta Wimbledoni Kunstikolledžisse, kust ta üsna varsti lahkus, et teha karjääri muusikas. Umbes 20 aastaselt esines ta bändis The Tridents, kes olid kohalikud kuulsused. Tollal oli üks kuulsamaid Briti R&B bände The Yardbirds, kus mängis Eric Clapton. Bänd aga jättis oma bluesi juured maha ja suundus popmuusika poole, et rohkem rahvale peale minna. Claptonile see ei meeldinud ja ta lahkus. Vabanenud kohta pakuti ühele kuulsaimale stuudiomuusikule, Jimmy Page`ile, kes aga keeldus ja soovitas enda asemel oma head sõpra, Jeffi. Beck nõustus ja kinkis enne tuurile sõitmist Jimmyle haruldase rohekas-sinise Telecasteri. Esialgu peeti võimatuks, et Beck suudaks asendada sellist meest nagu Clapton, kuid ta muutis seda kiiresti, manades esile võimsaid soolosid ja kasutades esimesena feedbacki ja karmi distortionit. Sellel ajal kasutas ta Telecasterit. Bändis tekkisid aga lahkarvamused, sest Beck võis ühel õhtul hästi mängida, teisel aga peavalus üldse mitte tulla. Seetõttu kutsuti nüüd bänd ka Jimmy Page. Need oli Yardbirdsi kõige viljakamad ajad – olid mängimas ju kaks briti kitarrigiganti, kes kontsertidel omavahel kahekõnesid pidasid. Pinged aga jätkusid ja lõpuks ei pidanud Beck enam vastu – Ta lõi oma kitarri pooleks ja lahkus bändist. Page üritas veel vaevu hingitsevat bändi koos hoida, kuid see ei õnnestunud. Talle anti käsk uus bänd moodustada ja mõningase otsimise järel sündis Led Zeppelin (minu teine lemmik).PS! Page mängis hiljem vast ühe Zepi kõige kuulsama loo, hipihümni „Stairway to Heaven“ soolo sõpruse märgiks sama Telecasteriga, mille Beck talle kinkis. 1967 aastal alustas Beck oma soolokarjääri, lastes välja popsingli „Hi-Ho Silver Lining“. Selles loos laulis ta ise, mida saatis vaid talle omane kidrasoolo, mille ta mängis Telecasteri välja vahetanud Stratocasteriga. Ilmselt mõjutas teda selleks Jimi Hendrix, kellega ta hästi läbi sai. Loost sai täiesti arvestatav hitt, millele järgnes veidi väiksem „Tallyman“. Sellel plaadil oli ka hitt „People Get Ready“, millel laulis Rod Stewart. 1989 Tuli veel üks plaat – „Jeff Beck`s Guitar Shop“, kus trumme mängis hiljuti lahkunud Terry Bozzio. See plaat teenis parima instrumentaalrocki Grammy. Peale seda jäi ta taas muusikast kõrvale, tehes vahel vaid veidi stuudiotööd, ning lastes välja plaadi „Crazy Legs“, mis oli tribuut tema lapsepõlve ühele kangelasele, Gene Vincentile. Oma vabal ajal tegelel Beck autode valmistamise ja remondiga. Ta on isegi maininud, et kui tal kitarri poleks, oleks ta ilmselt kas vangis või töötaks mehaanikuna. Eriti meeldivad talle vanaaegsed Hot Rodid. Peale kümneaastast pausi lasi Beck välja uue plaadi, mis tähistas uut ajastut tema muusikas.     Dear Secretary Salazar: I strongly oppose the Bush administration's illegal and illogical regulations under Section 4(d) and Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act, which reduce protections to polar bears and create an exemption for greenhouse gas emissions. I request that you revoke these regulations immediately, within the 60-day window provided by Congress for their removal. The Endangered Species Act has a proven track record of success at reducing all threats to species, and it makes absolutely no sense, scientifically or legally, to exempt greenhouse gas emissions -- the number-one threat to the polar bear -- from this successful system. I urge you to take this critically important step in restoring scientific integrity at the Department of Interior by rescinding both of Bush's illegal regulations reducing protections to polar bears.     Why Doesn't Anybody Write Anything About Glam Rock?

    WHY DOESN'T ANYBODY WRITE ANYTHING ABOUT GLAM ROCK? Jon Stratton In discussions of post-war British youth cultures glam rock gets very little attention. For example, in their seminal work on British youth cultural forms, Hall et al (1976:54), make only one passing reference to this subculture. In a list of subcultural possessions and objects they refer to: '... the glitter costumes of the Bowrieites ... .' Similarly, Brake (l980:80) in his outlines of British post-war youth cultures gives the culture half a page while skinheads get two pages and rockers one page. Hebdige, (1979) in Subculture: the meaning of style, does spend about two and a half pages looking at glam rock but most of this space is taken up with an analysis of the images of David Bowie. Hebdige writes of Bowie that: Certainly Bowie's position was devoid of any obvious political or counter-cultural significance ... (l979:6l). And Bowie's meta-message was escape — from class, from sex, from obvious commitment — into a fantasy past ... or a science-fiction future (1979:61). What is confusing for Hebdige about glam rock soon becomes clear: In glam-rock, at least amongst those artists placed, like Bowie and Roxy Music, at the more sophisticated end of the glitter spectrum, the subversive emphasis was shifted away from class and youth onto sexuality and gender-typing (1979:61-2). On the one hand, Hebdige can write so much about Bowie because glam rock's presentation of image as image lends itself to Hebdige's dominant semiotic method of analyzing cultural texts.

That made me recall one of my former lives, many years and many pounds ago: I was a UPS driver. One thing I learned from the over-the- road drivers was that the popular version of CB-speak, "10-4, good buddy" was not generally used by drivers, as it meant something other than just, "hi, my friend". The proper and socially-acceptable term was "10-4, good neighbor." See? You never know what you'll learn here. Agnew explains how machine screws brought us sound recording; Bob Wood continues wit his True-Life Radio Tales; Woody Woodward continues his series on Jeff Beck; Anne’s Trading Eights brings us classic cuts from Miles Davis; Tom Gibbs is back to batting .800 in his record reviews; and I get to the bottom of things in The Audio Cynic, and examine direct some off-the-wall turntables in Vintage Whine.
