The children performed superbly and really spread the Christmas spirit. Today everyone has been wearing Christmas jumpers to raise money for Save the Children. The name is probably derived from Talek, recorded back to 1349, by addition of a demonstrative pronoun (those Taleks!). Talek in turn is most likely from the old Cornish talawg meaning high forehead. The comparable Welsh name Tallwch and Pictish Talorc can be traced back to the 6th century. There are numerous other ideas concerning the origin of the Retallack surname from Cornish place names, Cornish saints, mine workings and Norse and Greek gods, and these are all reviewed here. Retallacks in Cornwall were largely miners and farmers. Many left Cornwall for the United States and Australia in the 1850's. I emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1977, but my great great grandfather emigrated in 1852 to Australia, where I was born and raised. Introduction The Retallack name is unusual and often requires careful spelling out. Pronunciation is also a challenge (correct is r'-TAL-lack, rhymes with metallic). With the advent of the internet and computer-generated genealogical research I have been getting frequent requests for information on the surname and its ancestry. Here is as much as I can reconstruct. Retallack is endemic to Cornwall, England, where it has been a rare name back to the 15th century (Table 1). Since the 19th century it has been part of a global emigration (Table 2) so that there are now more Retallacks in Australia and the U.S.

    The Willoughbys of Illogan and Redruth. The Willoughby family in Cornwall lived in and around Redruth over more than three hundred years and through many generations. At the present time there are still a number of Willoughbys living in the same area. It seems likely that there have been members of the same family – distant cousins of one another, all descended in some way from the same ancestors, who reached Cornwall in the mid seventeenth century. Thus the Willoughby family have had a foothold in and near Redruth for more than 350 years. The first of the family to settle in Cornwall may have been Thomas Willoughby, who was born in Colchester in about 1621. His father was supposedly one John Wilbie (b about 1591) and his mother is said to have been Katherine Collins (b about 1596). They are believed to have married in 1620. There were several variations in the spelling of the name over the generations. Wilby, Wilbie, Willaby, etc. were all used by different ancestors. There were other Willoughbys in Cornwall earlier than this date, but that family appear to have died out prior to Thomas Willoughby’s move to Cornwall, which seems to have been the result of his having to leave Essex in a hurry (having been ordered by the Colchester Court to pay maintenance of 1/6d per week for the “base child” of one Susan Parker)! Thomas married Margaret Nicholas, daughter of James Nicholas and Elizabeth, on 21 Jul 1647 in Wendron Cornwall. (Margaret Nicholas was born circa 1627 in St.Breage Cornwall and died circa 1679 in St.Martin Meneage Cornwall.) This couple had at least three children, John, Thomas and Peter.

    Redruth Town Council Consel An Dre Resrudh Annual Report for the Council Year 2008/2009 The Chambers Penryn Street Redruth TR15 2SP INTRODUCTION Welcome to our Annual Report. It is the Town Council’s policy to be open and informative. In this report you will find a set of financial accounts showing how the Council spends money on your behalf. During the year we have welcomed the Wilkinson’s store to Redruth, and despite losing the Co-op from the town centre this has brought a welcome boost to the shopping experience in Redruth. This year has also seen the launch of the Heart of Cornwall Loyalty Card which is available free of charge and can be used in member businesses throughout Redruth Camborne and Pool. As usual we have financially assisted a diverse range of local community groups from the Meals on Wheels service to the Christmas Events group. We run regular surgeries where members of the public can call in to discuss issues with Councillors, details of which can be found either by telephoning the office during working hours, or looking on our website (www.redruth-tc.gov.uk). In order to promote Redruth the Town Council took the decision to join with Camborne and Carn Brea Councils and Camborne-Pool-Redruth Regeneration to take part in a marquee at the Royal Cornwall Show. As we go to print preparations are underway for the event. The Council intends to highlight the many unique facilities we have in Redruth both to Cornish residents and to visitors, and we have produced a DVD entitled Redruth Revealed.
