HELFORD RIVER SURVEY A survey of the Pisces (Fish) of the Helford Estuary A Report to the Helford Voluntary Marine Conservation Area Group funded by the World Wide Fund for Nature U.K. and English Nature P A Gainey 1999 1 Summary The Helford Voluntary Marine Conservation Area (hereafter HVMCA) was designated in 1987 and since that time a series of surveys have been carried out to examine the flora and fauna present. In this study no less that eighty species of fish have been identified within the confines of the HVMCA. Many of the more common fish were found to be present in large numbers. Several species have been designated as nationally scarce whilst others are nationally rare and receive protection at varying levels. The estuary is obviously an important nursery for several species which are of economic importance. A full list of the fish species present and the protection some of them receive is given in the Appendices Nine species of fish have been recorded as new to the HVMCA. • Additional Survey Responses Halsetown Lelant
St Ives Area Neighbourhood Development Plan Built Environment - additional survey responses Halsetown As Halsetown was the first planned village in Europe it has been under conservation order and as it has no gas mains or mains sewage there can be little building whereas other areas would be more suitable. Extra homes mean more traffic so this problem must be addressed now. Lelant There has been too much inappropriate developments allowed in the area. Both in style and size. There is too much glass, stainless steel and flat roof features in current building in the area rather than that which should match in with existing surroundings. Use traditional materials where the surrounding buildings have used these materials. Over a number of years building has taken place, with no consideration for the environment or the character of the area. I have no faith in this survey as I feel the only thing that matters to anyone is profit. I have lived here all my life and I know that things have to change, but I am sorry to say I think we have destroyed what we should have treasured. St Ives is a gem. Please preserve it. Ignore this at your peril - look at Newquay! 30 years ago I would holiday at Newquay as a truly family resort. It is now a British Ibiza – think on! I am not Cornish but I love and work here. No second homes and would never buy one even if I have a lottery win. I love this place and support its tasteful upkeep. I support the Cornish in their desire to preserve this beautiful gem of a place.

  • Britishness, What It Is and What It Could Be, Is
COUNTY, NATION, ETHNIC GROUP? THE SHAPING OF THE CORNISH IDENTITY Bernard Deacon If English regionalism is the dog that never barked then English regional history has in recent years been barely able to raise much more than a whimper.1 Regional history in Britain enjoyed its heyday between the late 1970s and late1990s but now looks increasingly threadbare when contrasted with the work of regional geographers. Like geographers, in earlier times regional historians busied themselves with two activities. First, they set out to describe social processes and structures at a regional level. The region, it was claimed, was the most convenient container for studying ‘patterns of historical development across large tracts of the English countryside’ and understanding the interconnections between social, economic, political, demographic and administrative history, enabling the researcher to transcend both the hyper-specialization of ‘national’ historical studies and the parochial and inward-looking gaze of English local history.2 Second, and occurring in parallel, was a search for the best boundaries within which to pursue this multi-disciplinary quest. Although he explicitly rejected the concept of region on the grounds that it was impossible comprehensively to define the term, in many ways the work of Charles Phythian-Adams was the culmination of this process of categorization. Phythian-Adams proposed a series of cultural provinces, supra-county entities based on watersheds and river basins, as broad containers for human activity in the early modern period. Within these, ‘local societies’ linked together communities or localities via networks of kinship and lineage. 3 But regions are not just convenient containers for academic analysis.
