  • Message from the Mayor Hello All This Is My First Town Message and I Hope It Keeps You up to Date with Town News and Events
Edition 28 : July 2012 Message from the Mayor Hello All This is my first Town Message and I hope it keeps you up to date with Town news and events. Good Times It was marvellous to see virtually all our Town out to say farewell to the Olympic Torch after a fabulous day of sporting and music activities. This was followed, 2 weeks later, by the Queens Jubilee celebrations with 15 street parties (some overcoming torrential rain), Beating the Bounds, a picnic in the park and 2 tree planting ceremonies. The Mayfair in its new location was hailed as a success and the Regatta too was a resounding success, despite the weather. A new theatrical and music group Page2Stage started in late June. Chris, Andy, Paul and Niall from the Cecil Arms who while breaking a Guinness record for playing darts for over 41 hours raised a staggering £3000 for Parkinson‟s Disease UK. Two new shops opened – More than Art and the Original Factory Shop. Our shopping centre is thriving and has only 4 empty shops which is a very different case to many other towns in Cornwall. Not so good We live in an area with an extremely low crime rate, so it is sad to note that in June we have some less sociable members of our town who feel emptying and stealing grit bins is enjoyable. What it means for us is we have to pay more taxes to put things back to ensure we are ready for winter. Getting better Our Town Council has regained its Quality Status.

We see ourselves as part of a story of the grace of God, made manifest in Cornwall, which stretches back many hundreds of years, possibly to the very earliest days of the Christian faith. It’s a story that calls us on into the future too, in loving mission, ministry and service. As we follow ‘The Saints Way’ we will be deeply committed to Christ and to all that he calls us to be and to do; and to Cornwall, this very special place with its own particular culture, history and identity. We can only follow that Way faithfully if we see it as our corporate calling, as the body of Christ. So we encourage ministers of the gospel to come and join us here who are committed to setting the whole people of God free in their God-given calling, to make Christ known here in Cornwall, today. So we seek clergy of missional imagination and heart; those with a pastoral passion for people and communities and their flourishing.

  • John Harris Society Newsletter
THE John Harris Newsletter Society No 60 Summer 2017 John Harris: miner, poet, preacher 1820-1884 This classic and beautiful picture of Wheal Coates, on Cornwall’s north coast between Porthtowan and St Agnes, taken by Tony Kent, of Truro, has been used on the flyer being sent to organisations and individuals worldwide to highlight the bi-centenary festival of John Harris in 2020. We are extremely grateful to Tony for allowing us to use this photograph. See page 3 for a picture of the complete flyer. JHS 2 Annual general meeting – 18 February ’17 Thirty four people, including descendants of William John Bennetts, attended the meeting and stayed for David Thomas‘ presentation of ‗The William John Ben- netts Photographic Archive’ (covering the Camborne district in the Victorian pe- riod). We are grateful to David and to those who provided and served the refresh- ments as they concluded a very pleasant, interesting and informative afternoon. At the meeting, we welcomed three new members to the Society and I am de- lighted to say that Mr Peter Bickford-Smith, of Chynhale, was appointed as our President for a four-year period which will give continuity through our 2020 Bi- Centenary Festival. Further information about Peter is included later in this news- Paul Langford letter. During the business meeting, thanks were expressed to Caroline Palmer for her maintenance of the Facebook page and to Diane Hodnett for keeping the website up to date. The fact that we are not a wealthy Society was shown by the financial statement that showed a balance at 31 December 2016 of £726.93.
