After wintering at the Head of Wellington Channel in 76°55' N. Lat., it was taken, in the Spring of 1853 to Melville Island and floated on every conspicuous height discovered, and having accomplished near 1000 miles, it was returned to HMS Assistance. Passing a second Winter it was again carried on a Sledge journey down the Channel westward and through Barrow Straits and again returned after a sojourn of 73 days on the Sledge. On reaching England in 1854 it was presented to Mr Barrow. When the late Expedition of 1875 was fitted out under Capt now Sir KCB it was carried up Smith's Sound and hoisted on Cape Joseph Henry in Lat 83° N. On its return to England it was restored to Mr Barrow who bequeaths it to the family of Adml Richards. together with group of related items comprising an 18ct gold Royal navy Exhibition 1891' fob pendant containing a section of timber from HMS Victory engraved 'Timber from the 'Victory' 1805' and also named 'Admiral Sir George H Richards KCB' to rim, a gilt and enamel badge of Admiral Richard's family crest together with a 19th century wool work of HMS Assistance in the Arctic ice with men rigging sledges to the foreground, 44cm x67cm, a pastel portrait of Admiral Richards seated at a table with a copy of Arctic Regions, 36cm x30cm, two 19th century oval miniature portraits of Naval officers, one possibly of Francis Leopold McClintock (1819-1907), the other of Admiral Richards, a monochrome print of Admiral Richards and a copy of 'Aclands-And-The Sea' . Admiral George Henry Richards was captain of HMS Assistance under the command of Sir Edward Belcher on the Admiralty's last and largest Expedition to search for survivors of Sir John Franklin's Expedition of the Northwest Passage in 1845. In the early winter of 1850 the Assistance and the steam tender Pioneer became frozen in the ice off Sound in the Wellington Channel forcing much of the searching to be undertaken by sledge. As sledges were hauled at this time by the men themselves, they were treated in some degree as boats and each sledge named. The idea originated with Captain Horatio Austin who whilst leading a similar search in 1850 intended that sledge flags would ''...retain esprit de corps, and a naval atmosphere,..' .The flags were usually the personal badge of the commanding who led the team on foot, carrying a gun ahead of the crew for protection. A similar sledge flag for Bedford Pim by Lady Franklin is held in the National Maritime Museum. A sledge flag used by Scott on his first Expedition of 1900-1904 made by his mother hangs in Exeter Cathedral.

*Note At the start of WWII Lt Cmdr Grace had just been appointed to HMS Varnoc as an A/S Lt. HMS Varnoc was a British V class destroyer with a complement of 70 officers and men. In June 1940 HMS Varnoc participated in the evacuation of British troops from Norway and St Nazaire . Convoy patrols in the Atlantic followed, culminating in an action on 15th March 1941 which will be long remembered in naval history. On that day HMS Varnoc sank two German submarines U99 and U100 which were commanded by two of the Kriegsmarines top U-boat captains, Joachin Schepke and Otto Kretschmer. Details of these two actions are as described by Lt Cmdr Walter Edney from 'Recollections of WWII' ''After a little more than a mile, the silhouette of a U Boat could be seen on the surface, so without hesitation our captain gave the order to - Stand by to Ram. This we did in no uncertain manner, at full speed, hitting the U-Boat amidships and toppling her over. It bought Varnoc to a sudden standstill, embedded in the U-Boat which was only cleared by both engines, full astern. The U-Boat rose high in the air and sunk, the captain still on the bridge wearing his white cap but badly injured, went down with her. It subsequently transpired that the U-Boat we had sunk was U100 captained by a Lieut Capt Schwepke, a U-Boat ace who had sunk many thousands of tons of British shipping. After a short while, a U-Boat surfaced just astern from us, so close that it was necessary to move out of the way fairly quickly for fear of being torpedoed or fired upon. It was not to be. In fact both Walker and Varnoc opened a cross fire at the U Boat. It was clear that she was badly damaged and the crew would have to surrender. The U-Boat flashed a message to Walker to the effect that she was sinking. The bow of the boat subsequently rose in the air and she slithered down to her grave. This was U-Boat U99 captained by Lt Cmdr Kretschmen, the unchallenged Ace of the German U- Boat fleet after Prien who had been sunk with his U-Boat a few days before by HMS Wolverine. HMS Varnoc was commanded by Lt Cmdr J G W Deneys who was subsequently awarded The Distinguished Service Order for these actions.'

* Biography On 3/11/1942 Lt Grace was appointed to HMS Quail. He took part in the Salerno landings during September 1943. On 15th November HMS Quail, whilst on patrol in the Adriatic, struck a mine and was beached the following day. 1944 found Lt Grace serving on HMS Diomede - a boy's training ship at Devonport. * Notes Originally built as the 'Wild Duck' for the Maryland Committee of Safety in 1776, she was soon purchased by Maritime Committee and renamed 'Lexington' after the first battle of the American Revolutionary War, becoming one of the first vessels of the fledgling fleet of the Continental Navy. Commanded by John Barry, the Lexington sailed down the Delaware River and slipped passed the British blockade on the 6th April. The following day she engaged the British sloop Edward and after an hours engagement, the Edward surrendered her colours. Lexington, together with Reprisal sailed down the Delaware to Cape May, joining the Wasp and Hornet, but were prevented escaping out to sea by HMS Liverpool. On the 28th June the brig Nancy arrived with 386 barrels of gunpowder aboard but ran aground while attempting to evade the British blockade ship Kingfisher. Barry ordered that the gunpowder be removed to shore overnight leaving only 100 barrels aboard for the morning. A time delay fuse was lit which ignited the ship just as a number of British soldiers were boarding her, this action became known as the battle of Turtle Gut Inlet.

* Biography Donald McNarry FRSA (1921-2010) is widely acknowledged among model ship builders as the master craftsman of extreme miniature model building. Born in Walthamstow, February 21st, 1921 he took up model building as a boy and began entering competitions at the age of nine, winning several prizes at the annual Model Engineer Exhibition. In an early letter to the judges he expressed his dismay that his models were to be categorised as 'junior' rather than be judged against the 'proper' ship models. After serving with the Gordon Highlanders during the Second World War he continued to make models in his spare time, describing many of the models made between 1946 and 1953 in his first published book 'Shipbuilding in Miniature ' in 1955. It was also at this time he changed from 'amateur' model builder to freelance professional model maker, creating over 350 models of historic ships from 700BC to the late 1960s. Working in either 100ft to one inch or 16ft to one inch, the models though small, contained as much detail as others executed on larger scales. Donald's wife Iris often helped with early models producing the sails and Donald even used strands of his own hair for rigging on these models before thinner wires and filaments became available. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Examples of his work can be found in the Royal Collection, but he was particularly sought after by American Collectors and modellers. Some of his models can be seen at The Peabody Essex Museum, The Smithsonian and the Mariner's Museum. The quality and detail of his work is perhaps best acknowledged by his overall attitude as described in his own words in the introduction of his first book; 'I believe one of the most important things is to try and build miniature ships instead of ship models'
