  • Ubaldo Inspired by Challenging Upbringing Veteran Righty Motivated
Ubaldo inspired by challenging upbringing Veteran righty motivated to succeed after growing up poor in Dominican Republic By Zack Meisel / MLB.com | 08/16/12 10:00 AM ET Outside of San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, near the market, lies a hole. Natives refer to the area as Hoyo Caliente, or "Hot Hole." The destitute neighborhood hosts constant foot traffic from market-goers and a high volume of residents within its tight quarters. Indians pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez spent most of his childhood in Hoyo Caliente, which he described as "always crowded," "really poor" and "really dangerous." Every day, Jimenez and the rest of the kids in the project played baseball, sometimes in the front yard, other times in the street. Once in a while, they would play on the roof of a nearby store. Anywhere to escape the harsh reality surrounding them. They didn't have bats and balls at their disposal. There was no Louisville Slugger factory nearby. Rather, in the sweltering heat of the ghetto, the youngsters swung a tree branch at the detached head of a doll. Such ingenuity would make MacGyver proud. "It didn't matter what we used," said the soft-spoken Jimenez in his calm, high-pitched voice. "We were poor; we didn't have a lot of things. ... It was crazy. In the Dominican, all the kids really love baseball. It doesn't matter how you play it." Jimenez's humble beginnings helped shape who he is today: A lanky pitcher who mostly keeps to himself and rarely shows emotion on the field, even though he has experienced the highest peaks and most cavernous valleys that a baseball career can offer.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings March 17, 2018 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1978-The Reds are the first to don green uniforms for a St. Patrick’s Day exhibition. The Reds even order green catching gear for the occasion MLB.COM Reds give rising star Suarez 7-year extension Third baseman's $66 million deal includes club option for 2025 By Mark Sheldon MLB.com @m_sheldon Mar. 16th, 2018 GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Even after he lost in arbitration to the Reds last month, third baseman Eugenio Suarez pledged his commitment and happiness to be with the club, and he noted that the two sides were still talking about an extension. On Friday, Suarez was rewarded handsomely when Cincinnati signed him to a seven-year, $66 million contract extension through the 2024 season, with a $15 million club option for the '25 season. The deal, which does not include a no-trade clause, buys out his remaining three years of arbitration eligibility (including '18) and four years of potential free agency. "It's an honor for me to be part of this wonderful team. I will do my best to win a lot of games," Suarez said. "I just want to say I love this team. It's my family right now. I'm so happy." Suarez, 26, was to earn $3.75 million this season after losing in arbitration when he filed for $4.2 million. Besides a $2 million signing bonus, he will earn $2.25 million in 2018, $9.25 million in '19, $10.5 million in '20 and $11 million each season from 2021- 24.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings May 1, 2017 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1980-The Reds appear on local pay-television for the first time, in a game broadcast by ON-TV, a subscription service based in Cincinnati MLB.COM Garrett hoping to rebound vs. Pirates By Glenn Sattell / Special to MLB.com | April 30th, 2017 + 1 COMMENT The Reds host Pittsburgh on Monday to begin a four-game series at Great American Ball Park. Rookie Amir Garrett gets the start for Cincinnati, just the fifth of his Major League career. He turned in three stellar outings before being touched for 10 runs (nine earned) over 3 1/3 innings in his last start at Milwaukee. For the Pirates, it's the first of three trips to Cincinnati this season, but they won't be return until a three-game series in August (25- 27) and September (14-16). Gerrit Cole gets the start Monday. The 26-year-old right-hander will be making his sixth start of the season, and 100th of his Major League career. He was Pittsburgh's Opening Day starter. Three things to know about this game • Cole is still looking for his first win against the Reds (0-6, 5.44 ERA lifetime in eight starts) and his first win (0-3) at Great American Ball Park. • Reds second baseman Scooter Gennett had much success against Cole while playing for the Brewers. He hit .471 lifetime (8-for- 17) against Cole and hopes to continue that success with Cincinnati. • Garrett has already turned heads with his swing-and-miss stuff, but opposing batters are hitting the rookie hard when they do connect.
