Milone, Ortiz lead Wings over Bats

Rochester Red Wings– 5/8/15

LOUISVILLE, KY - Danny Ortiz gave Tommy Milone a three-run lead with a long before Milone even threw a pitch and the Rochester Red Wings beat the Louisville Bats 3-0 Friday night at Louisville Slugger Field. Milone (1-0) worked in his first game for the Red Wings (16-11) since being optioned from Minnesota following the May 1 game. The lefty allowed five hits and one walk with eight in 6.1 innings. He tossed 114 pitches, his most in a game since throwing the same number on July 27, 2013 for Oakland against the Los Angeles Angels. The last time Milone walked less than two batters in a start before Friday was six starts ago on August 22 of last season for Minnesota vs. Detroit when he didn't issue a walk. The Bats (11-17) did not have two men on base in the same inning until two reached with one out in the seventh inning prompting a pitching change. Mark Hamburger got Yorman Rodriguez to ground into a double play to end the inning. Ortiz's home run came against Louisville starter Raisel Iglesias (1-2) after being down in the count 0-2. Ortiz fouled a pitch off on the third pitch of the at-bat and took two straight balls before depositing the three-run shot onto the roof of the patio deck in right field. James Beresford and Josmil Pinto both scored on the fifth home run of the season for Ortiz. He leads the team with 16 RBI and is tied for the lead in homers. Beresford extended his hitting streak to 12 games and Reynaldo Rodriguez was the only Wings player with multiple hits. Aaron Hicks doubled and has a two-base hit in four of the last five games. A.J. Achter worked a perfect ninth inning to record his second save of the season. He has tossed 8.0 scoreless innings over six games since April 27. Next up: RHP Alex Meyer (2-1, 5.61) opposes Louisville left-hander David Holmberg (0-3, 7.83) in game two of the series Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. Next Home Game: Mon. May 11 vs. Toledo at 7:05 p.m.

Are Wings in future for Twins’ dynamic prospect duo?

Rochester Democrat & Chronicle– 5/7/15

It's safe to assume that at some point this summer, Byron Buxton and Miguel Sano — two of the very best prospects in baseball — will call Frontier Field home. But for now, the Minnesota Twins say they don't have a timetable for when those projected stars-in-waiting will be promoted from the Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts. Brad Steil, director of minor league operations, said the Twins first want to see both players return to their pre-injury form of 2013. Then they'll evaluate if a call-up to the Rochester Red Wings is order. "What we want to see is both Buxton and Sano knock the rust off and get back to where they were before their injuries," Steil said this week. "That's the first step. I don't think there's a timetable, so to speak." Buxton, 21, is the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB.com ratings. says the fleet-footed center fielder is No. 2, although the top player on that list, Kris Bryant, has already joined the Chicago Cubs from Triple-A Iowa. A native of Baxley, Georgia, Buxton played in only 31 games last season due to injuries. He hurt his wrist in the spring, suffered a concussion in August, then broke his finger during play in the Arizona Fall League in October. The power-hitting Sano, who turns 22 on Monday, is ranked 12th by MLB.com and 13th by Baseball America. The native of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, underwent Tommy John surgery on his right (throwing) elbow in March 2014 and missed the entire season. "They're both healthy now, that's the important thing," Steil said.

8

Buxton appears to have rebounded a little more quickly than Sano. In 24 Southern League games going into Thursday, Buxton was batting .274 with 3 doubles, 5 triples, 3 home runs and 15 RBIs. He had scored 18 runs and was successful on 7 of 8 steal attempts. He had 10 walks and 20 strikeouts. Sano was batting only .163 through 23 games with 3 doubles, 5 homers and 12 RBIs. He drew 15 walks but had fanned 28 times. Sano did play 67 games with Double-A New Britain in 2013 while Buxton suffered his season-ending concussion in his Double-A debut with the Rock Cats on Aug. 13. "There's a lot of timing involved and they're making probably the biggest jump in our system (from advanced to Double A)," Steil said. "With all of those different factors, you can see why they got off to a little bit of a slow start." Buxton is rolling now. He was batting just .180 through his first 12 games (9-for-50 with two extra-base hits) but now has been streaking, going 17-for-45 with nine extra-base hits in his past 12 games. On Monday he was named Southern League Player of the Week. Which, of course, prompted some fans in the Twin Cities to wonder why Red Wings outfielder Eddie Rosario, and not Buxton, was called up to Minnesota when Oswaldo Arcia went on the 15-day disabled list. "First they're all asking 'What's wrong with Buxton?' and then they're wondering why he wasn't called up," Steil said. If he continues his hot hitting in Chattanooga, Red Wings fans will be asking the same thing.

Johnson able to joke about pitch-clock place in Lookouts history

Chattanooga Times Free Press– 5/8/15

D.J. Johnson never will be credited with the first complete game or the first no-hitter in Chattanooga Lookouts history. Johnson is, however, the first Lookouts to be penalized for violating the new pitch-clock rule that is being employed by at its Class AAA and AA levels. In Monday night's 2-0 win over Jacksonville, the 6-foot-4, 235-pound reliever from Oregon was called on to replace starter D.J. Baxendale in the top of the seventh inning. The break between half innings is two minutes and 25 seconds, but time elapsed before Johnson was on the mound and beginning his windup. "I really had no clue," Johnson said Thursday night. "After my warmups, I took the mound and there was one second left. The umpire called time and rewarded the hitter with a ball. We're all getting used to these pitch clocks, and I had not had an issue with it all season long, so it definitely took me by surprise. "Guys have been joking with me, because I finished warming up for my second inning with 40 seconds left. I kind of made sure." Chattanooga rolled Thursday night to a 10-4 win over the Jackson Generals, who led 4-0 after the first inning. Adam Walker had a two- run home run and Byron Buxton hit his sixth triple for the Lookouts, who improved to 14-12. The new clock rules also require that a pitcher be in his windup within 20 seconds of receiving the ball from his catcher after the previous pitch and that a batter can move only one foot outside the box between pitches. Violations resulted in warnings last month, but starting last Friday, a ball was assessed for the batter if the pitcher wasn't ready and a strike if the batter wasn't set in time. When Johnson wasn't ready Monday, home-plate umpire J.J. January gave Suns batter Sharif Othman the 1-0 count. "I was more stunned than upset," Johnson said. "It didn't really take me out of what I was trying to do. You're always trying to get ahead early, and I knew I had one pitch left to work with and had to get the job done a little bit sooner." Although the Lookouts can look back at Monday's incident with some amusement, they aren't any more excited about the pitch clocks than they were at the beginning of the season. "Personally I don't like them, because I think fans come to watch a baseball game," manager Doug Mientkiewicz said. "There is no clock, and that's what makes baseball special. The umpires have enough on their plate to add something else. Why are we trying to rush something that's been working for almost 200 years? "If I paid $100 to watch a game, I would hope it lasted six hours so I could get my money's worth." Mientkiewicz's biggest concern is with the corner infielders, who can see the flashing lights behind the batter. 9

It hasn't been too much of an issue for the , said Johnson, who sides with Mientkiewicz in his belief that the game shouldn't be rushed. Johnson added that the aspect he misses most is standing behind the mound to gather his thoughts after falling behind in the count, but there is something to be said about being the first. "We do some trivia things on the scoreboard for the fans and everything, and if this comes up, it will be my first time to be a trivia answer," Johnson said. "It's something we're laughing about now. We make jokes about it in the bullpen. "Like I said, it hasn't bothered me at all this year, and hopefully it won't bother me again the rest of the season."

Miracle chomp Hammerheads, 6-4, win fourth in a row

Fort Myers Miracle– 5/8/15

FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 8, 2015) - The Fort Myers Miracle picked up a fourth consecutive victory with a 6-4 win over the Jupiter Hammerheads on Friday night at Hammond Stadium in front of 5,129 fans. The Hammerheads jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the third. Miracle starter Ryan Eades allowed a bunt single to Yefri Perez to start the inning. Austin Dean then sent a fly ball into the gap in left center field and Perez scored. Rehiner Cordova followed with bloop single into right and Dean trotted in to build a 2-0 Jupiter lead. The Miracle erased that advantage in the bottom of the third. Jupiter starter Sean Townsley gave up hits to Chad Christensen and Logan Wade to lead off the inning. Zack Granite then bounced a ball off first baseman Felix Munoz's glove for a base hit and RBI as Christensen raced in to score, 2-1. Engelb Vielma earned a walk from Townsley (1-4) to load the bases. Alex Swim then hit into a double play, but a second run crossed home as Wade scored to tie the game, 2-2. With a man at third and two out, Bryan Haar hugged the third base line with a sharp grounder for an RBI double and a 3-2 Miracle lead. After Townsley tossed a perfect fourth, the Miracle tagged the 6-7 lefty for two more runs in the fifth. Wade started the frame with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a bunt single from Granite. Vielma then hit a ground ball to short for another Jupiter double play while Wade scored for a second time to push the Miracle advantage to 4-2. With the bases empty, Swim reached on an infield hit to continue the inning and extend his hitting streak to 13 games. Haar then poked a base hit into right and Swim moved from first to third. Niko Goodrum stepped to the plate and hit a ground ball to deep short. Cordova fielded from the outfield grass, but his throw sailed over Munoz's head and into the stands. Swim advanced on home on the error and Goodrum was credited with a single, 5-2. The Hammerheads sliced a run off the lead in the sixth on an Avery Romero sacrifice fly, but the Miracle answered with an RBI base hit from Swim in the seventh, 6-3. After seven innings, Eades (2-0) returned for the eighth, but gave up back-to-back hits to Dean and Cordova. After getting Brian Anderson to pop out to second, Munoz dropped a single into right to score Dean. Eades left the game after 7.1 innings with nine hits and four runs allowed, three earned. Eades walked one and struck out four. Todd Van Steensel entered with runners on the corners and one out. Van Steensel induced a 4-6-3 double play from Romero to end the eighth, then pitched a perfect ninth. Striking out Joel Jimenez to end the game, Van Steensel earned his third save of the season. The Miracle (13-16) have now won four consecutive games and go for the sweep against the Hammerheads (12-17) on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. It's a SINK or SWIM Saturday and Stan and Haney Bobblehead Fundraiser Giveaway night.
