Editor’s Note

Over the last 3 years of helping Vicki with the Karaka Kronicle, we’ve made a few changes to how we put it together, distribute it, and communicate with our advertisers and community group contributors. A monthly reminder email is sent to our database of advertisers and community groups to remind them of the deadline for sending in content. The result being growth from 36-40 pages per month to 52-56 pages (pre-Covid), which has settled back to 48 pages in recent times. Our print runs have increased to 1600 copies per month delivered to rural letterboxes in the Karaka area, and a number of cafés and retailers who make it available for their “walk-in” clients. To increase our print runs to encompass the rapidly growing Karaka urban area, we would potentially triple our print run and costs, and would therefore require a significant increase in the number and cost of advertising. To increase the engagement with our urban area and make them more aware of the local Karaka community groups we now post a colour version of the Kronicle on the Karaka Sportspark website and Facebook page, along with the Karaka Lakes Group Facebook page. We hope to add the Karaka Harbourside Group Facebook page to this soon. Although there are still the regular articles from some community groups, we are always looking for more interesting articles, special events, school fundraisers, and historical stories and photos about Karaka and the surrounding districts. As a volunteer run publication, we rely on our community groups to provide that content to help promote their upcoming activities and events, and tell us about their results. Vicki and I will look to visit some community group & club meetings over the coming weeks & months to try and increase the awareness. Obviously all of this needs to be paid for, and our advertisers are the key to this. No-one will read a book of advertisements, but equally there wouldn’t be a Karaka Kronicle without them. We still want to cater to the traditional rural community selling hay, etc, but are also looking to help connect the rural and urban communities of Karaka. We’re really keen to receive feedback from the community. Please email us your ideas for improving the relevance of the Karaka Kronicle to you. Russell (Co-Editor) [email protected]

Central Government through the Transport and Infrastructure Committee is calling for public submissions on its inquiry into Congestion Pricing in Auckland. Congestion pricing involves implementing a charge (or charges) to manage demand on the road network. This can encourage users to change their travel behaviour - the time, route, or mode by which they travel. The committee’s inquiry is informed by the Ministry of Transport (in conjunction with partner agencies Waka Kotahi, Auckland Transport, , Treasury and the Public Service Commission) technical investigation report into Auckland congestion pricing. The report explores a number of different congestion pricing systems used overseas to reduce congestion and improve travel times. It found a congestion pricing system could reduce congestion in Auckland by around 8- 12% when fully implemented, like travel experienced during the school holidays. Officials have found that a larger strategic corridors scheme would be the most beneficial option for congestion pricing in Auckland, and could be phased in. More information on the reports can be found here www.transport.govt.nz/ area-of-interest/auckland/the-congestion-question The committee is interested to hear people’s thoughts on the idea of introducing congestion pricing in Auckland. It will be guided in its inquiry by the terms of reference. Any decision to implement congestion pricing would be made as a joint decision between Auckland Council and Central Government. The closing date for submissions is midnight Thursday, 20 May 2021 which can be made on the following link www.parliament.nz/en/ ECommitteeSubmission/53SCTI_SCF_INQ_109499/CreateSubmission Happy to take your feedback on these or any other things that are on your mind on the above contacts Alan

Does your tree have a virus? I recently walked through a client’s garden where they had a newly planted grove of magnolias. The problem was, that one clearly had a virus and this was putting the other trees at risk. The trees were expensive to buy and the clients were reluctant to remove the infected tree. So, what are the signs that your tree may have a virus?  Reduced vigor  Tree dieback  Leaf distortions, including rolling and twisting.  Unusual patterns on the leaves.  Reduction of fruit produced or distorted fruit.  Branches may look dull and become fragile and break.  The trunk may look cracked or be flaky Unfortunately, there is no cure for a virus, (think of Covid) A tree that is infected can be a problem for other trees in the garden, particularly those of the same genus. The virus can be transmitted by vectors such as biting and chewing insects e.g. aphids and mealybugs. The virus will not usually kill your tree, but it may distort it in a way that becomes unsightly or loses vigor completely on one side. This is heartbreaking if it appears on a specimen tree or even on a newly planted treasure. The best way to keep all your trees virus free is to keep them healthy by good management, including mulching around the trees, removing dead or broken branches to ensure quick efficient healing, and keeping an eye on any changes like a sudden influx of chewing insects. If you are not sure of your tree’s general health, contact us or give us a call and we would be happy to have a chat.

KARAKA STALLIONS MISS OUT IN NORTHERN DISTRICTS MASTERS FINAL The day started wet, and after discussion with the umpire there was a delay. The Morrinsville Creamers won the toss and chose to bat. The attack started with Rudy Bakker and Craig Gray. Both bowled tight lines, but the batsman got off to a fast start. After 8 overs, John Lucas had a bowl, and got us the 1st wicket, 83/1. Craig Gray brought back on, and he and Rudy got the next couple, Next up again was John who bowled well with Richard Keesing. With the screws tightening, Daniel & Baha (Skipper) Gardner took over. DG picking up a wicket. At drinks, they were 130ish/5, with two retirements (30 runs each).

How many club cricketers get to play on a test match venue ? A very special day indeed.

20

(continued) After drinks DG got another one, and the Stallions were growing with confidence. Kane Matich took over from Baha , and bowled beautifully, taking 3 wickets. Liam Fletcher from the other end, bowled like he always does, and was rewarded with a wicket. The fielding was pretty good all day, and the last wicket, was a runout courtesy of some good work from Henry Cassin. We bowled them out for 183/10. John and Rob Foster opened the batting. Fozzie suffered an injury, and with a runner, managed to get to 30, along with John. A slow start from them, but at drinks, we were 82/0. With Neeraj Kumar and DG batting, who was pushed up the order, Skipper Baha was confident. Neeraj got bowled for bugger all. Baha joined DG in the middle for some fun, and then joined Neeraj, out for bugger all as well. Liam looked good, getting 14ish. Kane also looked likely, getting 14ish. Meanwhile, DG was at the other end, blazing his way to a quick fire 30, including 2 big 6s. Requiring a run a ball, off the last 6 overs, with 3 retirements. Henry, Richard, Rudy and Craig got us close, and did what was needed, to get runs. But at the end, the Creamers bowled well, and we fell just 13 runs short, with 9 balls to go. We were in the hunt all day. It was such an amazing day. A big thanks, to all the fans that turned out to watch the Stallions and Creamers do battle in the final. Next year, we'll go one better

Power for the People!!

Christine Rupp, Chair, Counties Power Consumer Trust [email protected]

Counties Power last month ‘turned the turf’ on a new substation site at Barber Road, Bombay. This future-proofs the network to cater for growth both in population and electricity demand on the eastern side of the region. This is part of a large $40m works programme which also see the end-of-life Mangatawhiri and Ramarama substations decommissioned. The works area includes Razorback, Paparata, Lowry, Pinnacle Hill, Medhurst, Bombay, Barber, Mill, Great South, Portsmouth and Hillview Roads, including side roads off these. Transpower will also be completing work on their network in the area simultaneously. Counties Power is working in parallel with Transpower to Photo: Chief Executive Judy Nicholl turning the sod!! schedule works and streamline processes to minimise disruption. We thought it was time to introduce with a photo below of the current trustees:

Power for the People!! (continued)

This year 2 of the trustees must retire but are eligible for re-election. For information on being a trustee, including the nomination and election process, please go to our website www.countiespowertrust.org.nz or email the secretary at [email protected]. Nominations for two trustees will open on 5th May and close on 15th June 2021. The winter sports have started coming to our screens and some of us actually go to support them in person. Watch out for Counties Power sponsorship of some of our local well-known teams – Northern Stars, Counties Manukau Heat and Steelers teams. All that exercise and skill makes us proud!!

Tools to Share and a Workshop to Create Waiuku Community Workshop There lies a space in Waiuku, a place for the wider Franklin Community to come and share skills, share a laugh and share resources. That space, Waiuku Community Workshop (WCW), is opening its doors for people to attend woodworking, repair and craft workshops in June. The Workshop’s aim is to reduce what is sent to landfill, encouraging people to repair what they already use and utilise ‘waste’ materials, rather than buy new. The zero-waste aim of the Workshop is made even easier through the Tool Library that runs alongside the Workshop, making shared resources in the form of power, hand and garden tools available to members. Membership is low cost (just $25 per quarter) or free if you can volunteer. There are over 200 tools some donated from the generous community and others new thanks to the Auckland Council Waste Minimisation and Innovation Fund. On Wednesday’s you’ll find a small community of volunteers organising the Workshop and staffing the Tool Library desk. Some are retired mechanical engineers and there’s a young rail worker. There’s a shift worker at the steel mill who comes every other week and a stay-at-home mum who can set you up to borrow tools. It’s a varied bunch of people, all who will happily stop to have a chat and share their knowledge and skills. The Tool Library is currently open Wednesday’s 1 to 4pm operating out of Waiuku Zero Waste, 5 Hosking Place. The view is to extend those hours and open the Tool Library on the weekend when we get more volunteers. If you’d like to know more, want to leave feedback, or are interested in joining our community of volunteers,: email Chelsea – [email protected] or visit https://www.facebook.com/WaiukuCommunityWorkshop/

NEXT MEETING - Wednesday May 19 @ 7 pm (Third Wednesday of each month at Urban Soul – Karaka)

Our speaker at the April meeting was Jesse Wakeling, an inspirational young lady who shared her passion and knowledge on gardening and has set up Grandiflora Garden Services to feed that passion by helping others in their garden. We also received with thanks lots of lovely wool to knit up for Plunket and Papakura and Middlemore Maternity Hospitals. We are collecting items for a food bank donation as our guest speaker in May is Ian Foster who operates a foodbank locally and is doing, among others, valuable work in the community. Later in the year we hope to host Eddie from OrangeSky. Orange Sky is a non- profit organisation providing a free mobile laundry and shower service for people experiencing homelessness in Auckland, Wellington and soon in Christchurch. He has achieved this in less than 3 years. Another inspiration. News from Clarks Beach Yacht Club A few months ago, the Clarks Beach Yacht Clubhouse was sitting tired and forlorn; the Club’s future, with only ten members and some of them inactive, was not looking promising. Just in the nick of time, a new resident to the Clarks Beach community put her hand up to help. New Commodore, Rachel Woodworth, and her committee, have made significant changes and the club is flourishing again. New members: In the last few months, the membership has grown to over 90, a number of them for the social benefits, others so they or their children can take part in the ongoing Learn to Sail programmes. Others just want to go sailing. The club has Optimists, Sunbursts, Firebugs and Wind-rushes, besides all the safety boats/RIBS, available for members to use. Sailing opportunities: This summer’s Learn to Sail programmes have just completed, and will continue next sailing season. Have you or your children thought about learning to sail next summer? Have you got a trailer-sailer of some sort languishing in your garden or shed? Perhaps you’re an accomplished sailor looking for a group of other enthusiasts to have fun with? The club’s goal is to see more adults out in boats next summer, as well as encouraging the young ones. Club makeover: The clubhouse makeover has begun, with disability access and the deck recently upgraded by volunteers. NZ Steel is kindly donating the materials to fix the leaking roof and plans are in hand for an interior refurbishment. Several local groups are already regularly using it, and many other fun events are in the planning stages. Once the refurbishment is complete, the venue will be a picturesque location for weddings and other special occasions. Alcohol licence: Through the summer some licences were granted for special events, including enjoying the America’s Cup together. The club has applied for a permanent alcohol licence, which is hopefully only a few weeks away. Once that happens, the clubhouse will be open for members’ and their guests’ socialising every week Thursday—Sunday. Waiau Pa Volunteer Fire Brigade http://www.facebook.com/waiaupafire Call log There have been 9 calls since the last report. There were 4 Fire and Property and 5 Medical calls. This year has seen us with 48 calls 15 Fire / Property and 34 medical calls. ANZAC Day Parade Our Fire Fighters attended the Papakura dawn ANZAC parade. The Waiau Pa ANZAC parade also had our Fire Fighters in uniform wearing medals. All medals worn on the left over the heart are awarded medals. All medals on the right are medals awarded to relatives. Bowls Day A successful, fun day was held in April organised by the Clarks Beach Bowling Club and our local Waiau Pa Volunteer Fire Brigade. Fire Advice An open season means that it is safe for you to light an outside fire without a permit. Did you test your Smoke Alarms in April? You're four times more likely to survive a house fire if you have a working smoke alarm. One third of residential fires we responded to last year didn’t have smoke alarms installed. Smoke from a house fire can kill in less than three minutes. While the number of structure fires have decreased over the last five years, incidence of cooking fires has increased. Don’t leave the room when cooking. If you must, always switch off before you walk off. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of house fires in New Zealand. Fire and Emergency New Zealand recommend long-life photoelectric smoke alarms. Medical Advice An early call is appreciated as all local Fire Fighters/Medical First Responders are volunteers. Patients with breathing problems deteriorate if specialist help is not sought early. The sooner a person receives help the faster the recovery is likely to be. Please call 111 and ask for Ambulance to report a Breathing or Chest Pain problem.
