Five plaques are erected at the entrance to the church grounds which read: (1) This plaque commemorates the fact that this site was the first seat of Local Government in Franklin in 1862 (2) This church, opened on 5 April 1863, was garrisoned on the outbreak of the Waikato War. An attack by Maori forces on 14 September 1863 was repulsed (3) Pukekohe East School. From 1863—1880 the church on this site served as the District School (4) In memory of the Maoris who lost their lives in the engagement 14 September 1863, 6 were buried here.

In 1875 they shifted onto the property at Awhitu and erected a shack similar to the one now present in front of the main homestead. About 1880 the main homestead was built, with the weather boarding being constructed of pit sawn kauri.

It is a significant community landmark in a prominent position within the Town Centre. Although its detailing is not entirely original, the BUILDING envelope and roof form are largely intact and it is, therefore, reasonably authentic and represents the architectural style of its era.

ITEM A.40 Name: Former St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Type: Historic BUILDING (Residential former Church and Sunday School) Location: 57 Fraser Road, Pokeno Valuation Number: 03800/076.00 Legal Description: Pt Allot 278 SUBURBS of Pokeno Description: Erected in 1904, relocated in 1917 to present site. The church at the rear of the property is in private ownership. The bell tower has been removed. The manse was situated across the road. Associated with Scottish origins of the Helenslee settlers and a local landmark overlooking State Highway One.

ITEM A.42 Name: Former Dean Residence Type: Historic Building – Residential Location: 85 Dean Road, Pokeno Valuation Number: 03800/075.03 Legal Description: Lot 3 DP 134734 Description: Former residence of Helenslee settlers. A Victorian cottage with return convex veranda carried on timber posts with decorative brackets, sash windows, hipped roof, corbelled brick chimney (perhaps the work of Robert Shanks) and lean-to at the rear. Verandah balustrading is not original. Dates from c.1875.
ITEM A.43 Name: Former Pollok School Type: Building – Former Pollok School Location: 2112 Awhitu Road, Pollok ID Number: NZHPT Register 7780 – Category II Valuation Number: 03710/411.01 Legal Description: Pt Allot 23 PARISH of Waitara Parcel ID 4720250 Description: Former primary school, functioned for over 120 years, has historical significance for its association with education introduced under the Education Act 1877. The school building, which was designed by Education Board Architect Henry Allright in the early 1880’s, has architectural significance as a single classroom school. It is believed to be the oldest surviving school building on its original site on the Awhitu Peninsula.

ITEM A.44 Name: Pukekohe Town Hall (War Memorial Hall) Type: Building – Town Hall (War Memorial Hall) Location: 14 –16 Massey Avenue Pukekohe, Cnr Massey Street and Edinburgh Street, Pukekohe Valuation Number: 38703 / 111.00 Legal Description: Lot 44 DP 7997 Parcel ID 5072317 Lot 45 DP 7997 Parcel ID 5201176 Lot 46 DP 7997 Parcel ID 5047814 Description: Pukekohe War Memorial Hall was opened on 8 June 1957. The Town Hall was constructed by H J Woodbridge & Sons and the architects were Massey Beatson Rix- Trott Carter & Co. In April 1980, the memorial column which is a part of the First War Memorial Hall opened on 06 November 1921 was relocated from Roulston Park to the Pukekohe War Memorial Town Hall. Significant features of this hall include a memorial to the Unknown Soldier, Franklin Remembers Plaque, Rimu flooring and veneer panels, and unique curved decorative ceiling in the main hall.
ITEM A.45 Name: Tuakau Town Hall (War Memorial Hall) Type: Building – Town Hall (War Memorial Hall) Location: 70 George Street, Tuakau Legal Description: Pt Lot 6Pt Lot 6 DP 9268 Parcel ID 4982357 Description: A list of local men who had been on active service during World War One was first unveiled on 18 March 1918. Thereafter the work on War Memorial Hall began and the hall was officially opened on 15 September 1924. In 1929, a memorial plaque was placed on the front of the Town Hall. The hall was built in two stages - the main section of the hall was constructed in 1924 with the supper room being of post World War Two construction. In 1998 major renovations were undertaken that included a foyer being added to the front of the supper room.

ITEM A.54 Name: Nehru Hall Type: Building – Nehru Hall Location: 59 Ward Street, Pukekohe ID Number: CHI reference: 15868 Valuation Number: 38705 / 432.00 Legal Description: Pt Lot 3 Deeds Plan 887 Parcel ID 6580400 Description: This was the first Hall built by Indian settlers in New Zealand. It has served as a meeting place for cultural events and for teaching of Indian culture and language. It was opened by the Trade Commissioner in 1953. Money for the construction of the hall was raised from the Indian community in Pukekohe. This building was highly significant for the local Indian community as it signified a source of identity for them. The building also remains in its original form with very little alteration since its construction, with the exception of a ramp being built to allow for wheelchair access. The building is in good condition as it has been well maintained since construction.

ITEM A.55 Name: Howden House “The Hill” Type: Dwelling and accessory buildings Location: 34-38 Kitchener Road, Waiuku Valuation Number: 03901/858.00 Legal Description: Lot 9 DP 28275 Description: The Howden House “The Hill” reflects the professional and family life of a rural Auckland doctor in general practice. The intact nature of the property including chattels makes this particularly unique to the Auckland Region. The house was designed by G Selwyn Goldsbro in 1918. Accessory buildings include those constructed as late as the 1870s.

ITEM B.1 Name: Bishop Selwyn's Cairn Type: Building – Cairn Location: Adjoining SH1, Bombay ID Number: HP 036, XRef Computer No: HN 059 Valuation Number: 03790/016.00 Legal Description: Pt Lot 13, DP 6559, BLK XII Drury SD Description: Stone monument (Bishop Selwyn Cairn) located between the motorway and the Great South Road, near St Stephen's School, Bombay. Built of stone from the original St Stephen's school, it marks the first stopping of Bishop George Augustus Selwyn of New Zealand. When walking on his missionary journeys he rested there at night, the puriri trees were his only shelter. The land is the gift of James Rutherford, his friend in journey oft (see also C.7).
