Page 2 “Coletta Scope”- St. Colette Church, Livonia Anniversary of Dedication of St. Colette Church Tuesday, September 29th 9:00 am Mass On September 29th, 1984 Most Reverend Edmund C. Szoka, then Archbishop of , presided at the Rite of Dedication for the newly constructed St. Colette Catholic Church. The dedication of the church allowed the building to be used as a place for Catholic worship with all the rights and privileges granted by Canon Law. Perhaps some of you may remember the day and the celebration of the Dedication Mass. Each year Catholics are called to honor and celebrate the “birthday” of their parish church on the day it was officially dedicated. This observance is so important the Church ranks its celebration fourth after the observance of Lent/Easter, Advent/Christmas and major Feasts of the Lord and Blessed Virgin Mary. However, on this anniversary we celebrate not a building, but a loving God who provides a home for us on earth and in heaven. According to St. Paul, we are God’s building. We are living stones that are built up into God’s house (Ephesians 2: 20-22). This is experienced by the sacramental life celebrated within our church building. Think of all the Baptisms, Masses, Confirmations, confessions, marriages, funerals, Anointing of the Sick and the countless number of communal and private prayers that have been offered! It is within our church building that we experience a loving God who challenges us by Word and Sacrament to share his presence in the service we offer our fellow sisters and brothers.

Communal Celebration of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick Next Sunday, October 4th, In the Church at 1:15 pm The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is intended for anyone seven years and older who is chronically ill, undergoing medical testing or surgery, disabled by disease, age or addiction, or is affected by psychological or emotional problems. As the title states, this is a sacrament for the sick and not the dying! If you are in need of celebrating the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, please join others next Sunday, October 4th at 1:15 pm in the church. Facemasks must be worn and social distancing practiced. The celebration of the sacra- ment will begin once everyone is assembled and depending on the number being anointed the ritual should take ap- proximately 20 – 30 minutes. The communal celebration of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick takes place in our parish every month (usually the first Sunday). The private celebration of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick may take place anywhere and anytime there is a need for it (like prior to medical testing or surgery). Contact the parish office to arrange for the private celebration of this sacrament when the need arises.

Blessing of Animals Sunday October 4th, 2:00 pm Parish Parking Lot October 4th is the Memorial of St. Francis of Assisi, who is the Church’s patron saint of animals and the environment. In honor of this great saint, it is the tradition of the Church to provide a blessing of animals such as your family pets! Bring your pets to the parish parking lot on October 4th and participate in the blessing of animals. It is a very brief ritual and should last about 10 – 15 minutes. “Coletta Scope”- St. Colette Church, Livonia Page 3 . Pastor’s Corner This Tuesday, September 29th St. Colette Parish observes the Solemnity of the Anniversary of Dedication of our church building. On September 29, 1984 Archbishop of Detroit, , celebrated the Mass of Dedica- tion of the newly constructed St. Colette Catholic Church building as a place for divine worship. Each year we are called to gather on the anniversary of dedication for the celebration of Mass giving us an opportunity to offer praise and thanksgiving to God for such a blessing. Please join others for the celebration of Mass at 9:00 am on Tuesday to observe this important occasion. Beginning next Sunday, October 4th St. Colette Parish is fortunate once again to provide the celebration of the Children’s Liturgy of the Word at the 10:00 am Mass. At this Mass, the children in the assembly are dismissed from the main body of the church after the Opening Prayer. They go to the church’s chapel and hear the proclamation of the Sunday Scripture Readings assigned to that day’s Mass, receive instruction based on those Readings from a catechist, recite the Profession of Faith and offer Prayers of the Faithful. Afterwards they return to the main body of the church and are reunited with their families. The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is intended for children kindergarten – 6th grade. I encourage families with children K – 6th grade to celebrate the 10:00 am Sunday Mass so their children can have the opportunity to participate in the Children’s Liturgy of the Word. This service is offered by our parish’s Reli- gious Education Program, so if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact that office. St. Francis of Assisi is the Church’s patron saint of animals and the environment. A popular custom on his feast day, October 4th, is the opportunity for the blessing of animals. Here at St. Colette Parish we will observe the blessing of animals on the parish parking lot on next Sunday, October 4th at 2:00 pm. Please bring your family pets, large or small, on Sunday and participate in this very popular custom. Our nation’s November Election day is a little more than five weeks away! Please read the information in to- day’s church paper regarding the election guidelines of the Catholic Church. Of special interest is the insert in today’s church paper from the Catholic Conference, the official voice of the Catholic Church in Michigan. This in- sert examines the role of conscience formation and civility in the 2020 Election and provides questions and thoughts for consideration before we cast our ballots. I’m sure you will find the information to be helpful so please read it. We are in the midst of this year’s annual Catholic Services Appeal (CSA) which provides funding for the many programs and ministries offered by the Archdiocese of Detroit to the People of God in and to our parishes and Catholic institutions. Our parish’s target for this year’s CSA is $171,091.00 (15% less than last year). Targets are reduced due to the reduction in parish offertory collections and cost reductions made by the Archdi- ocese during the COVID-19 pandemic. As in the past, donations received over the parish’s CSA target will be returned to the parish. If there is a shortfall, the parish will have to transfer funds from our budget to meet the parish’s CSA target. To surpass this year’s CSA target, what is needed is for us to challenge ourselves to sacrifice a little more. This can be accomplished by ask- ing every parish household, if possible, for a donation of $275.00. Some may only give this amount and others will be able to give more while still others may only be able to afford less. Please remember, what is being asked is not an equal gift but an equal sacrifice. This year I am offering $275.00 to the CSA. This is in addition to what I contribute to the parish in my weekly contribution envelopes. I invite you to join me and offer the gift that is right for you! Please read carefully the information you received from the Archdiocese of Detroit regarding this year’s CSA and support the CSA to the best of your financial ability using the CSA donation card mailed to you or donate online. Also, use the return envelope you received and mail your CSA gift directly to the Archdiocese. You do not need to mail your CSA contribution or hand deliver it to the parish office or place it in the weekend collection basket. Your participation in the CSA supports not only the Archdiocese of Detroit, but St. Colette Parish as well. The support of all of us is critical to our ability to do the work God has called us to do. In faith, we must continue our mission to share the light of Christ in southeast Michigan, especially during these times of great need and opportunity. God bless you, Fr. Gary

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, al- mighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, You take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; You take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord,You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen

Lectionary: 136 Reading 1 EZ 18:25-28 Thus says the LORD: You say, "The LORD's way is not fair!" Hear now, house of Israel: Is it my way that is unfair, or rather, are not your ways unfair? When someone virtuous turns away from virtue to commit iniquity, and dies, it is because of the iniquity he committed that he must die. But if he turns from the wickedness he has committed, he does what is right and just, he shall preserve his life; since he has turned away from all the sins that he has committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die. “Coletta Scope”- St. Colette Church, Livonia Page 9

Responsorial Psalm PS 25:4-5, 8-9, 10, 14

R. (6a) Remember your mercies, O Lord. Your ways, O LORD, make known to me; teach me your paths, guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior. R. Remember your mercies, O Lord. Remember that your compassion, O LORD, and your love are from of old. The sins of my youth and my frailties remember not; in your kindness remember me, because of your goodness, O LORD. R. Remember your mercies, O Lord. Good and upright is the LORD; thus he shows sinners the way. He guides the humble to justice, and teaches the humble his way. R. Remember your mercies, O Lord.

Reading 2 PHIL 2:1-11 OR 2:1-5

Brothers and sisters: If there is any encouragement in Christ, any solace in love, any participation in the Spirit, any compassion and mercy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart, thinking one thing. Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but also for those of others. Have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus, Who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Alleluia JN 13:34

R. Alleluia, alleluia. My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; I know them, and they follow me. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Page 10 “Coletta Scope”- St. Colette Church, Livonia Gospel MT 21:28-32

Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people: "What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He came to the first and said, 'Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.' He said in reply, 'I will not,' but afterwards changed his mind and went. The man came to the other son and gave the same order. He said in reply, 'Yes, sir,’ but did not go. Which of the two did his father's will?" They answered, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Amen, I say to you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you. When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not believe him; but tax collectors and prostitutes did. Yet even when you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him."

PROFESSION OF FAITH - NICENE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstan- tial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the for- giveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Times the Church Is Open for Private Prayer Due to COVID-19, many people are hesitant to come to church to celebrate Mass on weekends or weekdays and watch Mass online or on tele- vision. Another opportunity for prayer is to come to church when Mass is not being celebrated. Certainly, one can always pray at home, but prayer in church in the presence of the Blessed Sacra- ment reserved in the tabernacle is called adoration. Our church is open for private prayer Monday – Thursday from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm, Friday from 8:00 am – 2:30 pm, Saturday from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, and Sunday from 7:00 am – 1:00 pm. Please note that some days the church is used for Masses or funerals and for cleaning and disinfecting. Contact the parish office for updated availability of the church building for private prayer.
