Porter ‘71 FALL 2015 - HIGHLIGHTS 01 Message from the PRESIDENT AMDG Dear Friends, As many of you know, a Jesuit’s primary hope is to always be available to serve the people of God. For the last 15 years (13 of those years as President), I have been doing my best to serve the people of God at U of D Jesuit. That time is coming to a close at the end of this academic year. Each year when I meet with the Provincial I always end the conversation by saying that I am ready to be sent wherever I’m needed. Fortunately for me, over the these last 15 years, the Provincial has always said, the need for you is at U of D Jesuit. This year he told me that he wants me to be ready for a new mission in late 2016. As you can imagine, part of me is deeply saddened to know that I’m now entering my last year at U of D Jesuit. The joy and gratitude I feel for having the privilege of serving this community is profound. There is simply no way to express my gratitude to all of you for what U of D Jesuit means to me. On the other hand, each Jesuit hopes that he will be sent where there is a need for his talents and skills. Thankfully, the Provincial has told me that they need me to serve a new mission. Fundamentally, this is what being a Jesuit means, to be sent where there is need. Most Jesuit high school presidents serve from 7-10 years. At the end of this year, I will be blessed to have had 16 years at this great place. How lucky I’ve been! Please read the accompanying letter from our Board Chair, Hank Cooney ‘69 God bless, KARL J. KISER, S.J. President MISSION STATEMENT University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy is committed to providing the highest quality of Jesuit college preparatory education to young men in southeast Michigan. U of D Jesuit, in collaboration with parents, will challenge its students to go beyond academic excellence, to be reflective, to be committed to the service of personal faith and the promotion of justice: to be “Men for Others.” 022 FALL 2015 - HIGHLIGHTS Letter FROM HENRY B. COONEy ‘69 AMDG September 2, 2015 Dear Members of the University of Detroit Jesuit High School & Academy Community, At the U of D Jesuit Board of Directors meeting last night, Father Karl Kiser informed the Board that his Provincial would like him to prepare for a new mission in late 2016. He will continue as President of U of D Jesuit until June 30, 2016. Father’s announcement at this time gives the Board ample time to prepare for the transition to Fr. Kiser’s successor next year. During his fourteen year tenure as President, Father Kiser has created a lasting legacy for the school. He has led the school through two strategic planning processes and two capital campaigns, the most recent and still ongoing being the exciting addition of our new science and engineering center that will open next year. In addition, Father has worked very closely with Mr. Trudel and the faculty and staff to integrate our school’s mission into an ever-improving academic, athletic and co-curricular program. Under his leadership we have also seen the growth of our faculty and staff formation program which will allow us to continue to strengthen the school’s Jesuit and Catholic identity. We greatly appreciate the tremendous impact that Father’s vision has had on our goal of forming Men for Others for the Greater Glory of God. To appoint a successor, the Board of Directors is preparing a transition plan designed to be thoughtful, methodical and comprehensive. Later this month we will officially commission a Presidential Search Committee to begin the formal part of our process. A Presidential search is the most important work for any Board, and we will solicit the insight of all stakeholders in the U of D Jesuit community to guide the effort. We are grateful that with Father Kiser’s leadership, U of D Jesuit begins this transition from a position of strength. We plan to use our transition process to enhance this position, building upon the positive outcomes from our most recent Strategic Plan in setting our future steps. This year will be a joyful one, as we celebrate Father Kiser’s many contributions while preparing for his successor. Thank you in advance for your support and engagement in this crucial process as we carry on the U of D Jesuit tradition that is so dear to all of us. Sincerely, HENRY B. COONEY ‘69 Chairman, U of D Jesuit Board of Directors FALL 2015 - HIGHLIGHTS 03 DEVEL OPMENT AMDG Dear Friends, We are humbly grateful for your generosity. In this issue of Highlights, the “President’s Report” publicly recognizes the many thousands of alumni, parents, friends and organizations integral in financially supporting the mission of educating Men for Others for the Greater Glory of God. We received several questions throughout the year about school accomplishments and activities, its history, whereabouts of former faculty, and making a gift to The High. Below are the most frequent questions we received. Q. What is the School’s greatest annual fundraising need? A. Tuition assistance. For the current academic year, more than 300 students received assistance totaling about $1.7 million. Each year, this amount must be fundraised from our benefactors. Q. When can I make my gift to the new four-level, 40,000 sq.
