It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections w ith a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation. -

The time-frame has been selected for two reasons: (1) actresses active after 1870 have been the subject of several dissertations and scholarly studies, while relatively little research has been completed on women active on the American stage prior to 1870, and (2) prior to 1850 there was limited theatre activity in this country and very few professional actresses. A general description of mid-nineteenth-century theatre and its social context is provided, including a summary of major developments in theatre in New York and other cities from 1850 to 1870, discussions of the star system, the combination company, and the mid-century audience. -

CHAPTER ONE BEFORE 1880, THROUGH EXCUSES ONLY She is in the swim, but not of it. —Journalist magazine In 1890, only 4 percent of American journalists were women, and percentages in other writing fields were even lower.Those few who made a serious com- mitment to writing found their course severely constrained—by their educa- tion, family responsibilities, social codes, and isolation from other writers. Because of these limited freedoms and connections, American women in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries wrote by relying on some form of justifi- cation or rationalization, which varied with the decades, and they usually wrote professionally for only part of their adulthood. Cast in the insubstantial role of Non-Writer, a subset of the care-giving Woman, these writers were meant to address only women readers on narrowly defined women’s topics such as home- making while the genres and pronouncements of male Writers were shaping American intellectual culture. Although their choices were few, for women working within a patriarchal system without supportive networks or groups, these excuses and restrictive definitions did provide some space for writing. DURING THE COLONIAL PERIOD In the colonial period, women’s labor was frequently needed, in towns and certainly on the frontier, and it provided their means of securing a living when 1 2 A GROUP OF THEIR OWN left without father or husband. Some better educated single women and wid- ows worked in journalism—writing, editing, printing, and distributing news- papers while also taking on contract printing jobs. Elizabeth Glover of Cam- bridge, whose husband, the Reverend Jose Glover, died on the boat to America, operated the first printing press in North America (Marzolf 2). -

SPRING 1974 69 Italian Dramatic Companies and the Peruvian Stage in the 1870's ENRICA JEMMA GLICKMAN II [Part I of this article appeared in the previous issue of the Latin American Theatre Review.] Celestina Paladini Ernesto Rossi never returned to Lima; however, some members of his com pany did. Prompted by pleasant memories of personal recognition during the 1872 season and by the hope of new financial successes—this time for their own exclusive benefit—they joined with other actors and, headed by Celestina Paladini, made their debut at the Teatro Principal on January 31,1874. The case of a group of actors separating from a large, well-known company to form a new one was quite frequent both in Europe and in South America. In Peru this practice mainly involved Spanish and Peruvian actors; speaking the same language, they could, and did, freely regroup themselves almost at every new season. Moreover, they seemed to be versatile enough to be able to pass from drama to zarzuela—although less frequently from zarzuela to drama—which makes it rather difficult to follow their movements over a number of years. In Italy, the multiplication of companies by secession of members was also very common. In his autobiographical work Quarant'anni di vita artística, written towards the end of his long career, Ernesto Rossi expressed his concern for the Italian dramatic art which, in his opinion, was then in a critical condition.
