Leonard Bachelder and his wife Nancy attended the 2013 NRHS convention in Alaska, turning this into a 6-week trip through Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon Territory, and Alaska. Len started us off in Calgary, Alberta, showing us the C-Train Transit Mall. The C-Train begain operating in 1981, and has been expanded several times since. The downtown Transit Mall consists of 7th Avenue with high-level platforms that are usually offset by a block on opposite sides for space reasons. The Transit Mall is entirely within the 7th Avenue Free Fare Zone, and is shared by both C-Train routes (the South and Northwest lines, forming route 201, and Northeast and West lines, forming route 202). As Len also showed us, Calgary Transit buses use the Transit Mall, but not the station platforms. Current rolling stock types are Siemens-Duewag U2 (#2001 - #2083, delivered from 1981 through 1984, and of which 80 of the original 83 remain in service), Siemens SD-160 Series 5 and 6 (#2201 - #2272, delivered from 2001 through 2006), and Siemens SD-160NG Series 8 (#2301 - #2338, delivered in 2007). Len showed us examples of all of these classes of cars. The C-Train also has car #2090 which was made from the remaining good sections of wrecked U2 cars #2019 and #2027, and experimental cars #2101 - #2102 (AC versions of the U2s, originally #3001 - #3002) which also served as demonstrators in Edmonton, but have been retained in revenue service in Calgary (not MU-compatible with the DC motored U2s, so inserted into the middle of SD-160 trains).

  • Edmonton's Hanover 601 Streetcar Returned to Germany
    Edmonton’s Hanover 601 Streetcar returned to Germany After more than a decade in Edmonton, “Hanover 601”, the red and white streetcar that plied the rails atop the world’s highest streetcar bridge, has been returned to its native Germany to celebrate the 125th anniversary of public transit in Hanover. It will become part of a museum collection in that city. The streetcar was sold for $1.00 and departed Edmonton on September 16th. The six-axle high performance car dates from 1970 and was one of two, 600 built by Linke-Hoffman-Busch with Kiepe electrics, and 601 built by Düwag with Siemens equipment, as prototypes to replace the Hanover streetcar fleet. After testing, the operator ÜSTRA decided on eight-axle cars, and so the pair were returned to their respective builders. Boston and San Francisco wanted to bring 601 over as a prototype for a joint fleet renewal program, but this was nixed by Nixon who insisted on home grown vehicles, resulting in the disastrous SLRV design by Boeing Vertol with bodies from Japan. Düwag modified the 601 design to develop the U2 LRT car for Frankfurt, and it was subsequently modified for Edmonton, Calgary and San Diego. When Edmonton’s LRT line was being designed, ETS’ Robert Clark, having established a connection with the Düwag management, suggested a tour of North American cities with 601, but Düwag’s General Manager replied to the effect that Düwag built the best streetcars in the world and needed no such demonstration. About that time, Siemens decided to diversify its medical operation in Canada and brought along Düwag, going from a sub-contractor to prime, with the Edmonton order being key.

ISSUE In September 2017, Motion #49 by Directors Garcia, Garcetti, Hahn, Solis, and Dupont-Walker was approved by the Metro Board and directed the CEO to develop an expanded donation/retirement policy for the historical preservation of the rail and bus vehicle fleet and to research transit museums. This report is provided in response to this Motion. DISCUSSION Metro operates and maintains a fleet of over 2,200 buses, 239 light rail, and 104 heavy rail cars. The light rail fleet consists of Nippon Sharyo P865 and P2020, Siemens P2000, Ansaldo-Breda P2550, and Kinkisharyo P3010 light rail vehicles. Metro’s Rail Fleet Services department maintains a schedule for the retirement of the fleet that is consistent with the fleet management plan which focuses on age and condition investment needs, requirements, and new rail projects. P865 fleet retirement criteria includes assessment of vehicle and required maintenance activities based on age, useful-life, and State of Good Repair criteria consistent with regulatory requirements; identification of vehicles with the highest mileage.

The APRA is a non-profit organization of volunteers whose interest is the collection, preservation, restoration, and interpretation of artifacts that represent the technology and history of the Canadian National and Northern Alberta Railways as well as industrial and short line railways in Western Canada. Edmonton Radial Railway Society Grant Awarded: $5,270.00 The Edmonton Radial Railway Society (ERRS) restores, maintains and operates historic streetcars with priority given to Edmonton streetcars and streetcars from across Western Canada. Streetcars have been restored to operating condition are placed in service on a regular schedule throughout the summer months at Fort Edmonton Park and the High Level Bridge streetcar line for the enjoyment and education of the general public.

    Edmonton Radial Railway Society (ERRS) Membership Information The activities of the ERRS are widespread as we aim to create and operate a working streetcar museum. Each member should have no problem finding his or her niche within our volunteer organization. Meetings & Social Activities Business meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month (with the exception of July and August), followed by an entertainment session. The meetings start at 7.30pm and take place upstairs in the Ukrainian Bookstore at Fort Edmonton Park. Guests and prospective mem- bers are welcome! 2 - 3 social events are organized during the year, i.e. summer barbeques, evening rides across the High Level Bridge, Christmas gatherings etc. Restoration of Streetcars Ongoing streetcar restoration is carried out in the society's main workshop at the Fort Edmonton Park Streetcar Barn. The jobs range widely from metal to wood work, machining, upholstery, painting, electrical wiring, etc. Even manufacturing of new parts takes place! New and dedicated members who are looking for a fulfilling hobby will definitely find their niche. Work sessions take place at the Streetcar Barn all year on Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Maintenance and Cleaning Regular streetcar and track maintenance, greasing and cleaning are further important jobs to keep the wheels turning both at Fort Edmonton Park and at the High Level Bridge. Even less technically skilful members will find something meaningful to do. Operations The ERRS operates regular streetcar service plus charters at Fort Edmonton Park and at the High Level Bridge from May until October. Learn to drive streetcars and become a motorman! Applicants need a valid driver's license, must be at least 21 years old and should enjoy interact- ing with people.
