Krishi Mandi, New Palsi Road, Jodhpur-342 005, Rajasthan, India INTRODUctION More than 1500 species of land mollusc are recorded from India. Out of these, twelve species viz. Achatina fulica Bowdich, Ariophanla bajadera (Pfeiffer), Ariophanta ligulata Ferrussac, Ariophanta solata (Benson), Bensonia monticola Hutton, Cryptozona belangiri Deshayes, Cryptozona (Nilgiria) semiru~ata (Seck.), Cryptozona (Xestina) bistrialis Beck., Macrochlamys indica (Godwin-Austen), Opeas gracile (Hutton), Zootecus insularis (Ehrenberg) and Mariaella dussumieri (Gray) are known to cause damage to agricultural, horticultural and plantation crops in India (Raut & Ghosh, 1984; Srivastava, 1992 and Subba Rao, 1975). So far, only two pestiferous land moliusc Opeas gracile (Hutton) and Zootecus insularis (Ehrenberg) are reported from Rajasthan (Subba Rao & Mitra, 1979 and Raut & Ghosh, 1984). Laevicaulis alte (Ferussac) is reported from Udaipur, Rajasthan but not as a pest (Ray & Mukherjee, 1963). The present paper reports for the first time, two more pestiferous land mollusc - Laevicaulis alte (Ferussac) and Macrochlamys indica (Godwin-Austen), as severe pests of neem seedlings in forest nurseries of Rajasthan along with new distributional records. ZooKeys 453: 1–17. doi: 10.3897/zookeys.453.8605 Abstract Two new species of the genus Zilchistrophia Weyrauch, 1960 are described from Eastern Ecuadorian rain forest: Zilchistrophia hilaryae sp. n. and Z. shiwiarorum sp. n. These two new species extend the distribu- tion of the genus considerably northwards, because congeners have been reported from Peru only. For the first time we present anatomical data (radula, buccal mass, morphology of the foot and the genital struc- ture) of Zilchistrophia species. According to these, the genus belongs to the family Scolodontidae, sub- family Scolodontinae (=“Systrophiini”). The previously assumed systematic relationship of Zilchistrophia with the Asian Corillidae and Plectopylidae based on the similarly looking palatal plicae is not supported. Since 1758, with the publication of Systema Naturae by Linnaeus, thousands of scientifi c names have been proposed for molluscs. The derivation and uses of many of them are here examined from various viewpoints, beginning with names based on appearance, size, vertical distribution, and location. There follow names that are amusing, inventive, ingenious, cryptic, ideal, names supposedly blasphemous, and names honouring persons and pets. Pseudo-names, diffi cult names and names that are long or short, over-used, or have sexual connotations are also examined. Pertinent quotations, taken from the non-scientifi c writings of Gertrude Stein, Lord Byron and William Shakespeare, have been incorporated for the benefi t of those who may be inclined to take scientifi c names too seriously. Introduction Posterity may remember Gertrude Stein only for ‘A rose is a rose is a rose’. The mean- ing behind this apparently meaningless statement, she said, was that a thing is what it is, the name invoking the images and emotions associated with it. One of the most cele- brated lines in twentieth-century poetry, it highlights the importance of names by a sim- ple process of repetition. -

Unfortunately, much of the Hawaiian land snail fauna has been lost, with overall extinction rates as high as ~70% (Hayes et al ., unpubl. data). However, the recent rediscovery of an extinct species provides hope that all is not lost, yet continued habitat destruction, impacts of invasive species, and climate change, necessi - tate the immediate development and deployment of effective conservation strategies to save this biodiversity treasure before it vanishes entirely (Solem 1990, Rég nier et al . 2009). Achatinellidae Auriculella pulchra Pease 1868 Notable rediscovery Auriculella pulchra (Fig. 1) belongs in the Auriculellinae, a Hawaiian endemic land snail subfamily of the Achatinellidae with 32 species (Cowie et al . 1995). It was originally described from the island of O‘ahu in 1868 and was subsequently recorded throughout the Ko‘olau Mountain range. -

CLENCH CURATOR OF MOW.USKS, HARVARD UNIVERSITY INTRODUCTION The following report is based largely upon the extensive collection of Pacific island mollusks in Bernice P. Bishop Museum. The study was made possible by a Yale-Bishop Museum Fellowship which was granted for the winter of 1940-1941. Upon my return to Cambridge, the collection of mollusks in my charge was reviewed for additional data for the two families considered in this paper. I am exceedingly grateful to the Yale University Committee and to the Trustees of Bishop Museum for this fellowship and for the rare opportunity to study in the Hawaiian Islands. The value to the individual scientist of an opportunity of this sort far transcends the published results of a single report. Such an experience with the chance of seeing new and different animals and plants in the field and under totally different conditions naturally tends to shift preconceived viewpoints obtained from other field experience. -

The mollusc fauna of the Miocene Pebas Formation of Peruvian and Colombian Amazonia contains at least 158 mollusc species, 73 of which are introduced as new; 13 are described in open nomenclature. Four genera are introduced (the cochliopid genera Feliconcha and Glabertryonia, and the corbulid genera Pachy- rotunda and Concentricavalva) and a nomen novum is introduced for one genus (Longosoma). A neotype is designated for Liosoma glabra Conrad, 1874a. The Pebas fauna is taxonomically dominated by two fami- lies, viz. the Cochliopidae (86 species; 54%) and Corbulidae (23 species; 15%). The fauna can be character- ised as aquatic (155 species; 98%), endemic (114 species; 72%) and extinct (only four species are extant). Many of the families represented by a few species in the Pebas fauna include important ecological groups, such as indicators of marine infl uence (e.g., Nassariidae, one species), terrestrial settings (e.g., Acavidae, one species) and stagnant to marginally agitated freshwaters (e.g., Planorbidae, four species).
