Krishi Mandi, New Palsi Road, Jodhpur-342 005, Rajasthan, India INTRODUctION More than 1500 species of land mollusc are recorded from India. Out of these, twelve species viz. Achatina fulica Bowdich, Ariophanla bajadera (Pfeiffer), Ariophanta ligulata Ferrussac, Ariophanta solata (Benson), Bensonia monticola Hutton, Cryptozona belangiri Deshayes, Cryptozona (Nilgiria) semiru~ata (Seck.), Cryptozona (Xestina) bistrialis Beck., Macrochlamys indica (Godwin-Austen), Opeas gracile (Hutton), Zootecus insularis (Ehrenberg) and Mariaella dussumieri (Gray) are known to cause damage to agricultural, horticultural and plantation crops in India (Raut & Ghosh, 1984; Srivastava, 1992 and Subba Rao, 1975). So far, only two pestiferous land moliusc Opeas gracile (Hutton) and Zootecus insularis (Ehrenberg) are reported from Rajasthan (Subba Rao & Mitra, 1979 and Raut & Ghosh, 1984). Laevicaulis alte (Ferussac) is reported from Udaipur, Rajasthan but not as a pest (Ray & Mukherjee, 1963). The present paper reports for the first time, two more pestiferous land mollusc - Laevicaulis alte (Ferussac) and Macrochlamys indica (Godwin-Austen), as severe pests of neem seedlings in forest nurseries of Rajasthan along with new distributional records. Babbar Department of Zoology, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana-141004 (Punjab), INDIA ABSTRACT From the present study it is concluded slug, Filicaulis alte and Macrochlamys indica was found in all the four plant nurseries namely PAU Plant nursery, Prabhakar nursery, Laxmi nursery and Tulsigaurd nursery. Thesegastropods carved irregular holes within the leaves of different plants from the month of April till October but no damage was recorded from November to February as animals were in hibernation. Maximum mean percent plants affected by gastropods was recorded in the month of August in all plant nurseries, when the population density of gastropods was maximum.So maximum damage was recorded in the month of August. Key words: Filicaulis alte, Macrochlamys indica, Nurseries, Plants Land Snail, Pulmonate molluscs are the members of the molluscan class, Gastropod, which have a coiled shell on their back into which they retract themselves unlike the slugs which lack shell. These terrestrial molluscs are destructive agricultural pests causing economic damage to field crops, vegetables, fruits trees and ornamental plants (Barker 2002). Snails and slugs are important components of detritivorous and herbivorous fauna in most of the ecosystems (Russell-Hunter 1983). Damage caused by them to ornamental plants in the field, nursery or greenhouse has been a perennial problem. They are gregariousfeeders that are active at night on cloudy days and causes damage. -
Comparative Anatomy of Four Primitive Muricacean Gastropods: Implications for Trophonine Phylogeny

ABSTRACT The main features of the shell, head-foot, palliai complex, alimentary and reproductive systems of Trophon geversianus (Pallas), Boreotrophon aculeatus (Watson), Paziella pazi (Crosse), and Nucella lamellosa (Gmelin) are described, and phonetic and cladistic analyses based on subsets of these data presented. Similarities in shell morphology revealed by phenetic studies are interpreted as being due to convergence, and are indicative of similar habitats rather than of close phylogenetic relationships. Convergences are also noted in radular and stomach characters. Cladistic analyses of anatomical data support the following conclusions: 1 ) Thaididae are a primitive and ancient family of muricaceans forming a clade equal in taxonomic rank with Muncidae; 2) Within Muricidae, P. pazi more closely resembles the ancestral muricid phenotype than any trophonine; 3) Trophoninae comprise a comparatively recent monophyletic group with differences due to a subsequent austral adaptive radiation. Abstract As elsewhere, invertebrate taxa have received little attention in conservation planning in India. The Western Ghats has been designated as a global biodiversity hotspot, one of only two such designations in India. We have assembled a database for land snail records in the region, incorporating both published records and the results of our own surveys over the last three years. Of the 269 species so far recorded, 75% are endemic to the region. Many species have very restricted ranges within the region. There is a decline in diversitv and local endemism from south to north. The southernmost division (8~·12°N) has much the richest recorded fauna (210 species), and the level of local endemism The latter is much lower in the central and northern divisions. There is thus considerable faunal turnover within the region. The overall level of endemism is higher than that recorded for other taxa, and our data have already been used to identify three local hotspots within the region. These results are discussed in terms of present climate and habitats, and in terms of environmental history. -
Land Snails of Leicestershire and Rutland
Land Snails of Leicestershire and Rutland Introduction There are 50 known species of land snail found in Leicestershire and Rutland (VC55) which represents about half of the 100 UK species. However molluscs are an under-recorded taxon group so it is possible that more species could be found and equally possible that a few may now be extinct in our two counties. There was a 20 year period of enthusiastic mollusc recording between 1967 and 1986, principally by museum staff, which account for the majority of species. Whilst records have increased again in the last three years thanks to NatureSpot, some species have not been recorded for over 30 years. All our land snails are in the class Gastropoda and the order Pulmonata. Whilst some of these species require damp habitats and are generally found near to aquatic habitats, they are all able to survive out of water. A number of species are largely restricted to calcareous habitats so are only found at a few sites. The sizes stated refer to the largest dimension of the shell typically found in adult specimens. There is much variation in many species and juveniles will of course be smaller. Note that the images are all greater than life size and not all the to the same scale. I have tried to display them at a sufficiently large scale so that the key features are visible. Always refer to the sizes given in the text. Status refers to abundance in Leicestershire and Rutland (VC55). However molluscs are generally under- recorded so our understanding of their distribution could easily change. -

They are an ideal group for monitoring site specific environmental impact assessment studies because of their limited migration patterns. Majority of them remain undiscovered or under described, partly because of insufficient exploration and partly because of their often minute sizes (Emberton, 1995). Unfortunately, for the last 75 years or so, in South India, no attention has been paid for this important group with exceptions of some localized reviews and publications [(Tonapi and Mulhekar, 1963; Tonapi 1971; Subba Rao and Mitra, 1979, 1986; Madhyastha et ai., 2003, 2005; Mavinkurve et ai., 2004a, (in press); Sandhya et ai., (submitted)]. The works of Ramanan (1900) and Sathyamurthi (1960) are the preliminary source for those interested in the terrestrial molluscs of Tamil Nadu. This work is in continuation of the checklist for the land snails of the southern states that is being fonnulated (Mavinkurve et al., 2004b). STUDY AREA Situated on the southeastern side of the Indian peninsula, the state of Tamil Nadu has an area of 130,058 sq Ian. The landmass of the state can be divided into two natural divisions: (i) The eastern coastal plain (ii) The hilly region along the north and the west. Along the whole length of the western part, at a distance from the sea varying from 80 to 160 km runs the Western Ghats range, a steep and rugged mass averaging 1220 metres above the sea level. -

Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT – The coast of the Western Australian Kimberley boasts an archipelago that comprises several hundred large islands and thousands much smaller. While the non–marine gastropod fauna of the Kimberley mainland has been surveyed to some extent, the fauna of these islands had never been comprehensively surveyed and only anecdotal and unsystematic data on species occurrences have been available. During the Western Australian Department of Environment and Conservation’s Kimberley Island Survey, 2008–2010, 22 of the largest islands were surveyed. Altogether, 17 species of terrestrial non–camaenid snails were found on these islands. This corresponds to about 75% of all terrestrial, non–camaenid gastropods known from the entire Kimberley region. In addition, four species of pulmonate freshwater snails were found to occur on one or more of four of these islands. Individual islands harbour up to 15, with an average of eight, species each. Species diversity was found to be higher in the wetter parts of the region.
