All outputs are recorded as quality assured or non-quality assured in ROMS, however in some instances this information is aggregated for reporting purposes. These research categories approximately conform to the categories utilized by the PBRF. The 2011 collection began in December and was completed in May 2012. In summary, Unitec’s research outputs have grown substantially in 2011. Quality assured research outputs have increased by 44% (the Unitec Annual Report target is 5%) and total research outputs have increased by 48% over 2010. -

Unfortunately, much of the Hawaiian land snail fauna has been lost, with overall extinction rates as high as ~70% (Hayes et al ., unpubl. data). However, the recent rediscovery of an extinct species provides hope that all is not lost, yet continued habitat destruction, impacts of invasive species, and climate change, necessi - tate the immediate development and deployment of effective conservation strategies to save this biodiversity treasure before it vanishes entirely (Solem 1990, Rég nier et al . 2009). Achatinellidae Auriculella pulchra Pease 1868 Notable rediscovery Auriculella pulchra (Fig. 1) belongs in the Auriculellinae, a Hawaiian endemic land snail subfamily of the Achatinellidae with 32 species (Cowie et al . 1995). It was originally described from the island of O‘ahu in 1868 and was subsequently recorded throughout the Ko‘olau Mountain range. -

E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] 5 Corresponding author Abstract Cryptachaea gigantipes (Keyserling, 1890) n. comb. is redescribed from fresh material, the female is described for the first time and notes on biology are given. Cryptachaea gigantipes has been recorded from natural habitats in south-eastern Australia, but is also commonly encountered around houses and other built structures, there and in the North Island of New Zealand. The earliest New Zealand records are from the year 2000 and it would appear that the species has been accidentally introduced due to its synanthropic tendencies. The idea of a recent and limited initial introduction is supported by cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) sequences, which are extremely homogeneous from New Zealand specimens compared to those from Australia. -

Sand Dune Restoration in New Zealand

Samantha Lee Jamieson A thesis submitted for the partial fulfilment for the degree of Master of Science in Ecological Restoration Victoria University of Wellington School of Biological Sciences 2010 [i] ABSTRACT Sand dunes are critically endangered ecosystems, supporting a wide variety of specialist native flora and fauna. They have declined significantly in the past century, due to coastal development, exotic invasions, and stabilization using marram grass ( Ammophilia arenaria ). An increasing number of restoration groups have carried out small scale rehabilitations of using native sand binding plants spinifex ( Spinifex sericeus ) and pingao ( Desmoschoenus spiralis ). However like many other restoration ventures, efforts are not formally monitored, despite the potential for conservation of species in decline. This thesis seeks to investigate the social and ecological aspects of sand dune restoration in New Zealand. Firstly, the status of restoration in New Zealand was examined using web based surveys of dune restoration groups, identifying motivations, methods, and the use of monitoring in the restoration process. Secondly, the ecology of restored and marram dominated sand dunes was assessed. Vegetation surveys were conducted using transects of the width and length of dunes, measuring community composition. Invertebrates were caught using pitfall traps and sweep netting, sorted to order, and spiders, beetles and ants identified down to Recognizable Taxonomic Units (RTUs) or species where possible. Lizards were caught in pitfall traps, and tracking tunnels tracked the presence of small mammals in the dunes.
