Sixth grade advisory time at Solvay Middle School Monday through Friday, sixth grade students from SMS stop by to see SMS Physical Education Teacher Mrs. Fredrickson after lunch. The group then spends 30 minutes together for advisory time, which allows them the opportunity to all read a book together. Pictured is the group reading the book A Wrinkle in Time. At the Solvay UFSD, all teachers are committed to improving the literacy skills of their students. SMS Assistant Principal Ms. Miczan and SMS Librarian Mrs. Rock have been a great help in selecting challenging, age appropriate, and interesting books to read. The group, often referred to as 6A, comes to advisory time excited, willing, and ready to read together. The group focuses on the joy of reading. Students in 6A always encourage one another, and are focused on improving together. The students especially enjoy interpreting what they think the voices of the characters in the book might sound like, and can often be found laughing with each other over these different interpretations. Great job to our sixth-grade readers! SMS students use Engineering Method to create parachutes Students in Mrs. Alton, Mrs. Barboni, and Mrs. Stellmack's class recently used the Engineering Method to create parachutes. In using the method, the students first defined a problem, “Why is a parachute so important to a skydiver?” From here, the students set the goal of, “I can use the Engineering Method to construct a parachute.” With their groups, they researched parachutes using norms of collaboration. For the project, the students were given the criteria of: • Needs to land safely on the Target • Needs to drop from two meters • Drop as slow as possible • The parachute has to stay together

Then, they designed a sketch of individual parachutes. Groups then collaborated, generated, and compared multiple solutions to create one parachute design. With their groups, they constructed a model/prototype of the design using the constraints they were given as engineers. They then tested their prototypes and focused on specific failure points and improvements that they could make to their design. For their final step, students created a Google slide show with failure points, improvements, and results. These results were communicated in a presentation to their peers, as well as to Mr. Gottlieb and Ms. Miczan.

¿Dónde está la familia? Spanish students from Solvay High School participated in an activity using Breakout EDU lockboxes. These boxes are similar to the popular Escape Room at the mall. SHS Spanish classes, ranging in levels 1-3, joined forces to work together collaboratively, retrieving clues around the classroom to solve un misterio. They entered the classroom and read a paragraph that explained their mission of answering where their familia was and that they had to find it. Students worked in teams, sharing their varying skills sets in the language helping each other to complete several small puzzles. Each small puzzle provided groups with a code that unlocked several locks that held a box closed. Inside of the box was the resolution to the misterio. Ultimately, each group solved the misterio and found their familias. They were changing things up this year and going on una vacación. ¡Qué emocionante!

SHS students showcase their work from Photovoice project Over the past semester, nearly 20 SHS students have worked with students from Syracuse University to participate in a Photovoice project. What is Photovoice? Photovoice is a participatory research and critical thinking method that allows students to share their experiences and collaborate for change. By taking photographs and writing about the meaning of the photos, students have had the opportunity to think deeply about their learning. This semester-long project culminated with a Photovoice Show where Solvay students, SU students, parents, teachers, professors, and administrators had the opportunity to view the photos and the writings. The end results were thoughtful, well- developed works. To view their work, visit www.solvayschools.org. Congratulations to all who were involved in this program!

Author Jeff Zentner visits SHS On Wednesday, May 2, author Jeff Zentner travelled from Tennessee to talk to students at SHS about reaching their goals and achieving their dreams. With him he brought inspiration, lessons on how to overcome speed bumps in life, how to turn your passions into a career, and plenty of sunshine. Zentner is the author of two books, The Serpent King and Goodbye Days. His third book, Rayne & Delilah’s Midnite Matine, is set to be released in March 2019. Throughout his presentation, the theme of courage was repeated and stressed to the students. Zentner focused on how his career path had been shaped by his success and failures. In harnessing his creativity into different forms, Zentner told students that he has been able to have a job he loves. Zentner ended his presentation by returning the focus to his hope for the students, showing them that is it okay to have to rebuild yourself, your career, and your plans. “I had to rebuild my creative life from the ground up in my 30s,” said Zentner. “And in doing that, I am able to do this and able to talk to you guys.” Read more about this author visit at www.solvayschools.org!
