  • The Black and the White Bride: Dualism, Gender, and Bodies in European Fairy Tales
Jeana Jorgensen: The Black and the White Bride: Dualism, Gender, and Bodies in European Fairy Tales The Black and the White Bride: Dualism, Gender, and Bodies in European Fairy Tales Jeana Jorgensen Butler University* Fairy tales are one of the most important folklore genres in Western culture, spanning literary and oral cultures, folk and elite cultures, and print and mass media forms. As Jack Zipes observes: ‘The cultural evolution of the fairy tale is closely bound historically to all kinds of storytelling and different civilizing processes that have undergirded the formation of nation-states.’143 Studying fairy tales thus opens a window onto European history and cultures, ideologies, and aesthetics. My goal here is to examine how fairy-tale characters embody dualistic traits, in regard both to gender roles and to other dualisms, such as the divide between the mind and body, and the body’s interior and exterior (as characterized by the skin). These and other dualisms have been theorized from many quarters. As Elizabeth Grosz states: ‘Feminists and philosophers seem to share a common view of the human subject as a being made up of two dichotomously opposed characteristics: mind and body, thought and extension, reason and passion, psychology and biology.’144 Further, ‘Dichotomous thinking necessarily hierarchizes and ranks the two polarized terms so that one becomes the privileged term and the other its suppressed, subordinated, negative counterpart.’145 Thus, any discussion of dualisms is automatically also a discussion of power relations. This article begins by summarizing the trajectory of dualism in Western intellectual history and culture, including how dualism fits within folkloristic and feminist scholarship.

Name of course: BA Thesis American Studies Date of submission: June 15, 2017 The work submitted here is the sole responsibility of the undersigned, who has neither committed plagiarism nor colluded in its production. Signed Name of student: Linda Houwers Student number: 4251164 Houwers 4251164/ 3 Abstract This work aims to explore the developments of the representation of gender in popular cultural productions over time. It will focus its research on a recent development within the popular Disney franchise: Live-action remakes of animated classics. In comparing and analyzing four case studies, two animated films and their live-action counterparts, this study seeks to form an idea of gender representation and its progression over time. Using gender theory by Judith Butler and a variety of theory on gender in media and culture specifically, an analysis focused on the representation of gender will be carried out for the chosen case studies of Cinderella (1950), Cinderella (2015), Beauty and the Beast (1991), and Beauty and the Beast (2017). The findings of this work conclude that the live-action case studies clearly reflect ongoing gender discourse and societal change, despite simultaneously still inhabiting some traditional stereotypes and ideas.

  • Cinderella's Metamorphoses: a Comparative Study of Two English Translations of Perrault's Tales
Przekładaniec. A Journal of Literary Translation 22–23 (2009/2010): 249–266 doi:10.4467/16891864ePC.13.044.1461 MARTINE HENNARD DUTHEIL DE LA ROCHÈRE CINDERELLA’S METAMORPHOSES: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF TWO ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS OF PERRAULT’S TALES Abstract: This comparative analysis of two translations of Charles Perrault’s “Cendrillon ou la petite pantoufle de verre” shows how the French conte was adapted for children in England at different moments and reflects different projects. Robert Samber’s “Cinderilla: or, The Little Glass Slipper,” published in Histories, or Tales of Past Times. With Morals (1729), is known as the first English translation of the tale. More recently, Angela Carter’s retranslation “Cinderella: or, The Little Glass Slipper,” published in The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault (1977), pays homage to Samber but also modernises the tale to carry a more emancipatory message. While Samber’s translation reflects the working conditions of Grub Street writers and acculturation of Perrault’s fairy tale in Protestant England, Carter gives it a feminist twist as she turns it into a “fable of the politics of experience.” She would later rewrite it as “Ashputtle or The Mother’s Ghost” (1987), this time using Manheim’s English translation of the Grimms’ “Aschenputtel” as a starting point. 1 (Meschonnic 1999: 342) This comparative study of two translations of “Cendrillon ou La Petite Pantoufle de Verre,” from Charles Perrault’s famous collection, Histoires ou Contes du Temps Passé (1697), shows how the tale has been redirected 1 “Thus, a translation is an instant of a text in movement, even an image that it is never over.

  • Egyptian Cinderella Comprehension Questions – Answer Sheet LO
Egyptian Cinderella Comprehension Questions – Answer sheet LO: To use evidence from the text and inference skills to answer questions Steps to success: I can answer questions by finding evidence in a story I have heard. I can use inference to describe a character’s feelings and give evidence from the text for my answers. Using the video or the PDF of the book Egyptian Cinderella, find evidence in the text to answer these questions. Don’t forget to write the question number neatly in the margin in your book and write your answer in a full sentence! 1. Where was Rhodipis born and how did she get to Egypt? Rhodopis was born in Greece and she was stolen by Pirates who took her to Egypt. 2. Write 3 ways that Rhodopis looked different to the other servant girls. The servant girls had straight hair, tanned copper skin and brown eyes. Rhodopis had tangled hair, pale skin and green eyes. 3. How did the servant girls feel about Rhodopis? What evidence in the text tells you that? The servant girls did not like her because they teased her and called her names. “Rosy Rhodopis” scoffed the servant girls, hissing her name. 4. In the text it says ‘Rhodopis always hurried to do their bidding’, what do you think ‘bidding’ means? Use the story to help you. Anything that explains ‘bidding’ means ‘orders’ . 5. What did Rhodopis sometimes do when her chores were done? When her chores were done, Rhodopis would dance for her animal friends. 6. How did the Egyptian servants feel when they saw Rhodopis’s slippers and why? The servants felt jealous because they had ‘clumsy sandals made from Papyrus’ and her slippers were dainty and beautiful.

It has been accepted for inclusion in Electronic Theses and Dissertations by an authorized administrator of Digital Commons @ ACU. ABSTRACT Fairy tales hold the power to influence societies and to challenge societal injustices, and the story of Cinderella exemplifies both of these roles. In this study, I conduct a rhetorical analysis of four different versions of the Cinderella narrative: Charles Perrault’s “Cendrillon,” the Brothers Grimm’s “Ascenputtel,” Anne Sexton’s “Cinderella,” and Disney’s Cinderella (2015). I examine Perrault’s “Cendrillon” and the Grimms’ “Aschenputtel” using constitutive rhetoric. This theory operates around the basic premise that rhetoric holds the power to aid in the shaping of societies. While analyzing “Cendrillon” and “Aschenputtel,” I specifically look for themes of classism and nationalism, respectively. I then examine Sexton’s “Cinderella” and Disney’s Cinderella (2015) using feminist standpoint theory as my theoretical lens.

  • Symbolicthemes in the European Cinderella Cycle
SymbolicThemes in the European Cinderella Cycle FronciscoVaz da Silaa Instead of setting out, in orthodox fashion, to archive the endless varia- tions characteristic of fairv tales into fixed types-rendering fragrnented, thus meaningless materials-the following analysis u'ill try to bring forth from the given flux its underlying symbolic themes. This approach will be presentedas applied to Iberian rnaterialsof the "Cinderella" cycle, consid- ered in a conparative perspective; then some thoughts rvill be proposed on the nature of fairv tales' symbolism. It has long been recognizedthat the "Cinderella" theme is rnore com- plex than meetsthe eye.In 1893,Marian Cox integrated in the "Cinderella t1pe" rnany tales in which the heroine is expelled fron, instead of being forced to remain at, home. This author defined three basic headings r,vithin the Cinderella type: "Cinderella proper" as the heroine ill-treated by a stepmother at home, later to be recognizedtry means of a shoe;"CAtskin," defined as one'r,r'hoflees horne disguised in sorne skin to avoid marrving her "unnatural father"; and "Cap o' Rushes," expelled by her father and later disguised under sone rough cover for answerins in an apparently unsatisfactory way-usuall,v involving a comparison to salt-the qucstion: "how rnuch do you love rne?" Furthermore, Cox construed a fourth heacl- ing to accommoclate a large nurnber of "indeterminate tales" not fitting anv of the preceding classes, and yet a fifth relating to a male Cinderella (1893:lrxv).In 1951,this whole field-the indetcrminacy of r,vhoseborders was candidly admitted by Cox (nxiv)-has been termed by Anna Rooth the "Cinderella Cycle" (1951).
