Beijing Jiaotong University International Students Application Guide

[I. General Information of Beijing Jiaotong University]

Beijing Jiaotong University（BJTU）is a national key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education and now is jointly supported by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Transport, the China Railway Corporation and Beijing Municipal Government. BJTU is one of the first universities selected into the “National 211 Project” and the “985 Innovative Platforms for Key Disciplines Project”, one of the first institutions authorize to confer Master’s and Doctoral degrees. BJTU, as the leading organization, has established the Collaborative Innovation Center for Rail Transit Safety, which is one of the first 14 collaborative centers selected into the “National 2011 Projects” by the Chinese government. In 2017, BJTU was selected into the ‘Double First-Class’ National Initiative. Based on the advantaged disciplines, BJTU will focus on building ‘Smart Transportation’ as a world-class discipline.

BJTU has two 1st-level national key disciplines, Traffic and Transportation Engineering and Information and Communication Engineering ； two 2nd-level national key disciplines, Industrial Economics and Bridget and Tunnel Engineering. Together with the 2nd-level national key disciplines covered by the 1st-level disciplines, there are eight 2nd-level national key disciplines. There are 15 centre for post-doctoral studies, 21 1st-level discipline doctoral programmes, 33 1st-level discipline master programs and degree programs of 14 disciplines including MBA, Master of Engineering, Master of Accounting, Master of Law, etc.

Our university regards strengthening cooperation and exchanges as an important way to upgrade the level of running school and enhance its influences domestically and abroad. BJTU has established cooperative relations with more than 200 universities and famous multinational enterprises from 45 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and France. In order to enhance cultural exchange and mutual understanding，BJTU has established Confucius Institutes at Group T of KU Leuven in Belgium, Texas Southern University in the United States，University of Campinas in Brazil and Warsaw University of Technology in Poland. Beijing Jiaotong University attaches great importance to the international education so as to bring out the power of a multidisciplinary system with preparatory, bachelor, master and doctoral programs. A variety of scholarships are available for international students, such as Chinese Government Scholarship, Confucius Institute Scholarship, Beijing Municipal Government Scholarship and BJTU Scholarship. In 2019, there were over 2000 international students from 120 countries studying at BJTU. BJTU graduates have very good job opportunities. Some of them choose to work in their home countries embassies while others are hired by internationally renowned companies such as IBM and BMW. In addition, more and more international students would like to work in Chinese-funded companies including Sinopec, CRBC, CRCC, Huawei, and Baidu. And these days, there are quite some of graduates choose to start their own business whether in China or in their home countries.

Our university has three campuses in Haidian district of Beijing, Weihai city of Shandong province and Tangshan city of Hebei province. Beijing campus is close to the city center with convenient transportation and living facilities. Weihai campus mainly focuses on joint-education and freshmen college of international students. The campus is 5.5 kilometers away from the golden beach coastline, which is beautiful and comfortable but low living cost. Tangshan research institute, as a demonstration plot of technology research and development, technology achievement transformation and international education and training, is the preparatory program base for international students of our university.

(I) Bachelor Program:

 Study duration: 4-5 years; Type of degree: Bachelor Degree

 Application qualification:

1. Non-Chinese citizens with ordinary foreign passports, physically and mentally healthy.

2. Applicants should hold high school diploma.

3. Language requirement: HSK 5 or above.

 Application period: The first round: From January 15 to March 15

The second round: From March 16 to June 30

 Application procedures:

1. Complete the online application procedure at BJTU International Student Service System (http://study.bjtu.edu.cn), and pay the application fee CNY 500/person.

2. Documents for application: Identification Photo, Personal Information Page of Passport, Notarized Diploma of Most Advanced Study(in Chinese/English), Notarized Transcripts of Most Advanced Study(in Chinese/ English), Study Plan, Resume, Valid Report of Chinese/English Proficiency, Physical Examination Form (within 6 months), Bank Statement of the latest 1 month (with a balance over 10,000 dollars), other supporting documents.

3. Add the “BJTU Admission Office” (Wechat account: 18515990275) on Wechat App for possible interview. Please let us know your application number when adding us and applicants who fail to add our Wechat will be deemed to have voluntarily given up the opportunity of interview.

4. Approval and admission: Applicants that have passed the first review need to attend an online interview. The interview time is subject to the email received. The approval status and admission result may be inquired via BJTU International Student Service System (http://study.bjtu.edu.cn).

5. Date of enrollment: The enrollment date will be announced by BJTU, and be specified in the Admission Letter. The admitted students shall go through the enrollment and registration procedures at Beijing Jiaotong University within the period stipulated in the Admission Letter. The original diplomas will be verified before enrollment, and those who fail to satisfy the requirements or provide forged documents will be disqualified for enrollment.

 Study duration: 2-3 years; Type of degree: Academic Degree or Professional Degree 3 / 16  Application qualification:

3. Language requirements: Chinese program: HSK 5 or above;

English program: TOEFL 80 / IELTS 6.0 or above.

4. Holding the Acceptance Letter from the supervisor (the contact information of schools and supervisors can be found at http://en.bjtu.edu.cn, Schools & Departments).

Programs Introduction

8 / 16 Tangshan Campus of Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) provides one year preparatory training courses for foreign students who would like to apply degree programs at BJTU. The preparatory program has four types: humanities, business, science and medicine. After the preparatory training, students who have Preparatory program reached the admission requirements of the academic program with excellent performance will be given priority for the scholarship consideration.

Tuition fee: CNY 22,000/academic year for humanities, business and science programs,CNY 26,000/academic year for medicine program.

For the master’s degree holders or above who would like to do their research with BJTU supervisors Senior visiting scholars Tuition fee: CNY 13,500/semester.

For the students (sophomores and above) who would like to visit BJTU to do short-term study or research study. The research or study plan shall be determined General visiting scholars in advance and approved by both foreign universities and BJTU.

Tuition fee: CNY 11,000/semester. Weihai campus of Beijing Jiaotong Univeristy offers six levels of Chinese language and cultural courses from zero to the advanced level. Through this program, learners can improve their Chinese communicative competence and deepen their understanding of Chinese history, culture and modern society. Our Chinese language program university is one of the designated HSK test centers. Learners can study either one semester or one year.

Tuition fee: CNY 11,000/semester.

Customize short-term training programs for our partners in different fields such Short-term training as civil engineering, rail transit, and urban planning according to their diversified program and specific needs. Offer short-term programs which include Chinese language study, culture Summer/ Winter camp experience and academic exchanges activities during summer and winter breaks.

[III. Scholarships]

A. Chinese Government Scholarship--Bilateral Program

The Ministry of Education of China will provide full scholarships or partial scholarships in accordance with the education cooperation and exchange agreements or memorandums concluded with relevant governments, institutions, schools or international organizations. Bilateral Program supports applicants of both degree programs and visiting programs.

Scholarship Coverage: Tuition fees, experimental expenses, basic internship expenses, campus accommodation, comprehensive medical insurance, stipends (CNY2,500/month for undergraduate students, CNY3,000/month for master’s students and CNY3,500/month for doctoral students).The annual review is compulsory for all students. Those who pass the review may continue to enjoy the scholarship in the next year.

B. Chinese Government Scholarship-- “Silk Road” Program and Chinese University Program

Set up by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, “Silk Road” Program and Chinese University Program both offer full scholarships for designated Chinese universities and certain provincial education offices in specific provinces or autonomous regions to recruit outstanding international students to study in China. “Silk Road ” program supports undergraduate students from countries along the Belt and Road; Chinese University program supports graduate students.

Scholarship Coverage: Tuition fees, experimental expenses, basic internship expenses, campus accommodation, comprehensive medical insurance, stipends (CNY2,500/month for undergraduate students, CNY3,000/month for master’s students and CNY3,500/month for doctoral students). The annual review is compulsory for all students. Those who pass the review may continue to enjoy the scholarship in the next year.

C. Chinese Government Scholarship-- China-Africa Friendship Program

In order to implement the commitments made on the 2018 FOCAC Beijing Summit and strengthen the cooperation in the field of education, the Ministry of Education of China has set up this program to support and encourage outstanding young people from African countries to study in China.

Scholarship Coverage: Tuition fees, experimental expenses, basic internship expenses, campus accommodation,

1 Complete the application procedure at Chinese Government Scholarship Information System (http://www.campuschina.org) (Program Category Type B, BJTU Agency Number: 10004).

4 Approval and admission: Applicants that have passed the first review need to attend an online interview. The 13 / 16 interview will be carried out in late May, subject to the email received. The approval status and admission result may be inquired via BJTU International Student Service System (http://study.bjtu.edu.cn).

5 Date of enrollment: The enrollment date will be announced by BJTU, and be specified on the Admission Letter. The admitted students shall go through the enrollment and registration procedures at Beijing Jiaotong University within the period stipulated in the Admission Letter. The original diplomas will be verified before enrollment, and those who fail to satisfy the requirements or provide forged documents will be disqualified for enrollment.

D. MOFCOM Scholarship

MOFCOM Scholarship is set up by Ministry of Commerce of People’s Republic of China to further strengthen the communication and cooperation between China and other countries as well as to develop talents for developing countries. Starting from 2015, MOFCOM Scholarship mainly sponsors the young and the middle-aged talents from recipient countries to pursue their postgraduate degree education in China. China Scholarship Council is entrusted to administer the Scholarship.

Scholarship Coverage:

1 Students are exempt from tuition fee, teaching material fee, research and survey fee, allowance of English-taught program, dissertation guidance fee;

2 Free on-campus accommodation;

3 Monthly stipend: 36000RMB per year per master student;

4 One-off resettlement fee: 3000RMB per person;

5 Free medical insurance for international students;

6 One-time round-trip international airfare for all the students (First time fly to China after enrollment, and Fly back to home country while graduation), and a maximum of “n-1” (“n” is for the length of schooling year which is set while the student was enrolled by the program, “n” is less than or equal to three) round-trip international airfares for home visits (one time per year set at the end of an academic year);

7 The annual review is compulsory for all students. Those who pass the review may continue to enjoy the scholarship in the next year. Students who postpone their graduation will not receive the continuing sponsorship.

Application Qualification:

1 be a citizen of a developing country other than the People’s Republic of China, and under the age of 45 (born after September 1, 1975);

2 be physically and mentally healthy with a physical examination report issued by a local public hospital, and not having any disease or situation listed below:

a) Diseases prohibited by Chinese Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Laws and Regulations;

b) Other severe chronic diseases like high blood pressure, cardio-cerebrovascular disease, diabetes; psychological diseases; or other infectious diseases which may harm public health;

c) In recovery period after major surgery or acute disease attacks;

d) Severe physically challenged;

e) Pregnancy;

3 be a bachelor's degree holder when applying for master's program, with at least three years' working experience;

14 / 16 4 be incumbents with a relevant educational background or working experience to the applied program are preferred;

5 be public officials of division level and above (or corresponding level) in government sectors, or senior management staff of organizations and enterprises, or academic backbones of universities and research institutions;

6 be sufficient in English which meets the academic requirements of the program, be equivalent to IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80 and above level;

7 be with the potential of professional development, and is committed to promoting the friendly exchanges and cooperation between the host country and China;

8 be neither studying in China nor being admitted to other scholarship programs provided by Chinese government.

E. Confucius Institute Scholarship Established by the Confucius Institute headquarters/Office of Chinese Language Council International, the scholarship

Applicants may make inquiries or applications to the Confucius Institute in various countries, Chinese language testing centers in foreign countries and Chinese embassies and consulates in foreign countries. F. Beijing Municipal Government Scholarship Beijing Municipal Government Scholarship is established by Beijing Municipal Government, aiming to provide tuition fees fully or partially to the international students studying or applying for studying in Beijing. This scholarship is given to those diligent, hard-working individuals. According to Open, Fair and Impartial principles, BJTU is authorized to evaluate the eligibility of all applicants and make effective use of the funds. G. BJTU Scholarship for International Students Appraised once per academic year to reward current students with outstanding achievements.

Weihai Campus: Double rooms, accommodation cost: CNY 3,600/year/person

Tangshan Campus: Double rooms, accommodation cost: CNY 5,000/year/person

Dorms are equipped with public kitchen, laundry room, bathroom, restroom, TV set, phone, WIFI, air-conditioner, single bed (including bedding), bookshelves and wardrobe.
