The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a triennial survey of 15-year-old students that assesses the extent to which they have acquired the key knowledge and skills essential for full participation in society. The assessment focuses on proficiency in reading, mathematics, science and an innovative domain (in 2018, the innovative domain was global competence), and on students’ well-being. These students can identify the main idea in a text of moderate length, find information based on explicit, though sometimes complex criteria, and can reflect on the purpose and form of texts when explicitly directed to do so. • Almost no student was a top performer in reading, meaning that they attained Level 5 or 6 in the PISA reading test. -

International Student Mobility: Growth and Dispersion Neeraj Kaushal and Mauro Lanati NBER Working Paper No. 25921 June 2019 JEL No. J1,J15,J24 ABSTRACT Recent years have seen an unprecedented growth and geographic dispersion in international student mobility. In this paper, we empirically test the predictions of two competing theoretical models underpinning the determinants of student mobility – the human capital model and the migration model – across traditional and emerging destinations. Our findings suggest that while the predictions of the migration model are generally valid in explaining student emigration to non-English speaking OECD destinations, student flows to English speaking countries and emerging economies are largely in line with the predictions of the human capital model. -
Suppression and Restoration of the Society of Jesus in China
SUPPRESSION AND RESTORATION OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS IN CHINA by Fr Fernando Mateos S.J. Contributor’s Abstract and Profile Fr. Mateos' s thirty-two pages well documented paper is based on Jesuit correspondence and original documents and depicts three main climax periods of the Jesuit exile in China; suppression of the Society, tribulation of its former members and then their final incorporation into the New Society. The paper gives overview of the Jesuits geographical dispersion and activities in various locations in China; it also stresses the crucial role of superiors and their decisions, their sorrows and afflictions especially manifested by Fathers; François Bourgeois, Superior of the French Jesuits and by Jean Amiot, an astronomer and writer. In 1778, Fr. Louis de Poirot, one from five ex-Jesuits who survived in Peking wrote several letters to the Congregation of Propaganda requesting the re-establishment of the Society of Jesus in China. In the end, the 78-year-old de Poirot remained in Peking alone, and peacefully passed away on December 13, 1813, eight months before the solemn publication of Pius VII’s Bull, “Sollicitudo Omnium Ecclesiarum”, restoring the Society of Jesus in the whole world. Here comes account of the revival of the Jesuit presence in China, its circumstances, challenges and opportunities opened to the Chinese mission in the New Society. The construction and operation of a metro system are costly, and the sustainable development of a metro system is difficult using government funding alone, particularly for developing countries. The main source for metro system financing in China is, currently, government budget and bank debt. Many cities have begun to seek new ways to attract funds from finance markets, which is increasing the need for the evaluation of metro financing. This study uses Beijing as a case study that utilises various financing modes with impressive results. As participants of the financing reform, the authors collected all the relative government documents and interviewed stakeholders to accomplish this work. This article reviews the development of financing modes for the Beijing Metro system during the last four decades and analyses the role of the government in the reformed financing system within the Chinese social political environment. The study addresses the advantages and challenges of the reforms in this context. To further analyses the technical processes of typical financing modes, the public-private partnership mode of Line 4, the BT mode of Olympic Branch Line, the insurance claim mode of Line 10 and the failure of the market oriented financing for Capital Airport Line are analysed and evaluated in detail. -

How this transformation may influence the spatial distribution or types of shops in the real urban space is a major question. By comparing the morphology of shops in 2005 with 2015 based on detail field work survey in 94 urban blocks inside the 2nd ring road of Beijing, the data suggest that in the last decade the total number of shops on the street increased rather than decreased. At neighbourhood scale, this paper focuses on three case areas: Dongsi, Xisi, and Lama temple to study the changes of different types and the detail distribution of these shops. The result shows that with the development of information technologies the emerging shops are mostly service-based economies such as restaurants and pubs, or retails but more oriented to local people and tourists. Furthermore, the city-scale shops on the super grids retains its vitality. They also tend to penetrate into the local streets inside the urban block. On the other hand, the morphology of local shops is affected by the visibility from super grid and the syntactical connection of these streets in its local surroundings. -

It used to be the largest railway station during the time of 1950s – 1980s. Subway Line 2 runs directly to the station and over 30 buses have stops here. Domestic trains and some international lines depart from this station, notably the lines linking Beijing to Moscow, Russia and Pyongyang, South Korea (DPRK). The station now operates normal trains and some high speed railways bounding south to Shanghai, Nanjing, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Zhengzhou, Fuzhou and Changsha etc, bounding north to Harbin, Tianjin, Changchun, Dalian, Hohhot, Urumqi, Shijiazhuang, and Yinchuan etc. Beijing Railway Station is a vast station with nonstop crowds every day. Ground floor and second floor are open to passengers for ticketing, waiting, check-in and other services. If your train departs from this station, we suggest you be here at least 2 hours ahead of the departure time.
