Surv Surv Script
Surviving Survival 9/2/09 p.1 SURVIVING SURVIVAL ** Bach Morimur I’ve been thinking about survivors: survivors of holocaust, of genocide, survivors of terrorist attacks. and survivors of illness, of epidemic . survivors of domestic violence, of poverty, of deprivation. My question is not – how do you survive? My question is – how do you survive your own survival? Because it’s a blessing to live through something, to escape the body’s or the spirit’s destruction. But what about those you left behind – the ones who didn’t make it? the other patient, the war buddy, the little sister; the fireman, the rescue worker… the ones who did not survive? You don’t forget them. You can’t. I’M EK. THIS TIME ON S&S – SURVIVING SURVIVAL. What is the way to healing? Some survivors say you must forget the past, bury the loss, put it behind you as quickly as possible. Others need to mourn, to memorialize; they tell their stories over and over to anyone who will listen. It is important to have a purpose, a goal, a reason that’s it’s all right for you to have been the one who was saved. You dedicate your life to something: to raising children, to bearing witness, to making music, to saving others. CAMBODIA Start with mood music – melancholy – for Cambodia: *** NEW INTERNATIONAL TRIO (something sad-sounding) OR *** Rak Smey Khemera: "Light From Heaven" TK. 5? 6? It’s almost impossible to comprehend what happened in Cambodia during Pol Pot’s regime, beginning in 1975: an entire population uprooted, deliberately murdered by the HUDNREDS of thousands in the killing fields . -

The booklets provide a detailed account of key actions of the war for those familiar with the period, as well as serving as an educational tool for younger people less familiar with the heroic actions of Allied Service personnel. In this, the sixth booklet in the series, we commemorate the way the Royal Navy and the RAF combined so effectively with the 21st Army Group and made such a rapid leap forward from the Seine to Antwerp. August 1944 presented the Allies with a unique opportunity to lunge like a rapier through German-held Belgium and the Netherlands and end the war in weeks rather than months. To enable such a rapid advance, the well-fortified channel ports had to be cleared of German forces and opened up to Allied ships carrying the hundreds of tons of fuel and ammunition needed to sustain the effectiveness of the rapidly advancing Armour and Infantry. -

Speaking Through the Body
DE LA DOULEUR À L’IVRESSE: VISIONS OF WAR AND RESISTANCE Corina Dueñas A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures (French). Chapel Hill 2007 Approved by: Advisor: Dominique Fisher Reader: Martine Antle Reader: Hassan Melehy Reader: José M. Polo de Bernabé Reader: Donald Reid © 2007 Corina Dueñas ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT CORINA DUEÑAS: De la douleur à l’ivresse: Visions of War and Resistance (Under the direction of Dominique Fisher) This dissertation explores the notion of gendered resistance acts and writing through close readings of the personal narratives of three French women who experienced life in France during the Second World War. The works of Claire Chevrillon (Code Name Christiane Clouet: A Woman in the French Resistance), Marguerite Duras (La Douleur), and Lucie Aubrac (Ils partiront dans l’ivresse) challenge traditional definitions of resistance, as well as the notion that war, resistance and the writing of such can be systematically categorized according to the male/female dichotomy. These authors depict the day-to-day struggle of ordinary people caught in war, their daily resistance, and their ordinary as well as extraordinary heroism. In doing so, they debunk the stereotypes of war, resistance and heroism that are based on traditional military models of masculinity. Their narratives offer a more comprehensive view of wartime France than was previously depicted by Charles de Gaulle and post-war historians, thereby adding to the present debate of what constitutes history and historiography.
