In correspondence and phone conversations, he gave me invaluable information about Gabriel and shared the background behind the poem ‘Ces autres conquérants’ written in Dora. Sincere thanks also to Michel Pateau, Jean Cayrol’s nephew, who so kindly answered my questions about Cayrol. I thank the camp survivors who spoke to me about their deportation. Over a memorable evening at his home, Dr Bernard Py (deceased) recounted his memories of Dachau and also shared copies of related documents with me. Raymond Huard generously made time to see me at short notice and shared his memories of his imprisonment in Fresnes and deportation to Buchenwald. Bertrand Herz recounted to me the unforgettable and moving story of his deportation to Buchenwald as a 14-year-old in 1944. Dr André Fournier talked to me about his deportation to Buchenwald, Natzweiler-Struthof and Dachau and related how he came to write the poem ‘Moriturus’ in Buchenwald; in his letters to me following our initial conversation, he gave a very illuminating reflection on why poetry meant so much to him iv during his incarceration. The generosity, patience and thoughtfulness with which all these former camp prisoners answered my questions and related their experiences was humbling. My heartfelt thanks to each one. Thank you to all the friends who gave me great support during the writing of this thesis. Finally, thank you to my family for their love, prayers and encouragement. v Abstract Adorno’s controversial declaration that ‘to write poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric’ kindled debates on the Holocaust and literature that persist to this day. A number of critics, including Alvin Rosenfeld and Antony Rowland, have argued that conventional poetics and aesthetics are deeply problematised, even incapacitated, by the horrific nature of the concentration camps. Holocaust poetry, these commentators suggest, seeks self-effacement and silence, constantly drawing attention to its own inability to assume the horrors of the camps. My thesis challenges this paradigm, examining the little-studied corpus of French-language poetry written by Resistant and Jewish camp prisoners during their captivity. I argue that this poetry consistently articulates interior freedom, a freedom rooted in the enduring intellectual, philosophical, political and religious convictions of these poets. Far from representing a self- defeating project, poetry for these prisoners, I contend, was a vital means of uncovering a saving ethos under conditions of extreme deprivation and oppression. In this thesis, I focus on the poetry of five French prisoners, André Ulmann (Mauthausen), Gustave Leroy (Dora), Maurice Honel (Auschwitz), André Verdet (Buchenwald) and Jean Cayrol (Mauthausen). I bring out from close textual readings the distinctive nature of each author’s understanding of freedom, discussing the poetic strategies, including metaphor and Surrealist imagery, that contribute to their elaboration of compelling visions of freedom and looking at the ways in which freedom becomes embodied in the aural dimension and formal structure of their poems. Notably, in my study of Jean Cayrol’s extravagantly imaginative and mystical poems, I introduce the concept of ‘imaginative translocation’ to describe the author’s unique narrative approach and particularly ambitious conception of interior freedom. It challenges traditional views by showing that the Committees were created largely to facilitate economic collaboration with Nazi Germany.

The works of Claire Chevrillon (Code Name Christiane Clouet: A Woman in the French Resistance), Marguerite Duras (La Douleur), and Lucie Aubrac (Ils partiront dans l’ivresse) challenge traditional definitions of resistance, as well as the notion that war, resistance and the writing of such can be systematically categorized according to the male/female dichotomy. These authors depict the day-to-day struggle of ordinary people caught in war, their daily resistance, and their ordinary as well as extraordinary heroism. In doing so, they debunk the stereotypes of war, resistance and heroism that are based on traditional military models of masculinity. Their narratives offer a more comprehensive view of wartime France than was previously depicted by Charles de Gaulle and post-war historians, thereby adding to the present debate of what constitutes history and historiography.

Of course such behavior influences it strongly, and the recent crisis over Iraq has brought it once again to the fore. This revival has also stimulated an outpouring of studies, some of them extraordinary, and it should be said at the outset that Philippe Roger’s work, now available in English, has become an instant classic, required reading on the subject.1 Roger traces anti-Americanism back to the eighteenth century, when French naturalists believed that life in the Americas was of necessity savage, brutish, short, and destructive of civilization. He takes us through several critical periods in its development, from the early national period through the Civil and Spanish-American wars, when the specter of American imperialism first began to frighten Europeans, through the 1920s and 1930s, and the postwar period. The merit of Armus’s study is to focus in on one such critical moment, the period from 1930 to 1948, which in his telling became a defining moment, in which anti-Americanism developed into an obsession with some thinkers, a world-view and an ideology almost in itself.

    PERSONAL HISTORY Franco Cesana Date of Birth: September 20, 1931 Place of Birth: Bologna, Italy Franco was born to a Jewish family living in the northern Italian city of Bologna. Even though a fascist leader, Benito Mussolini, came to power in Italy in 1922, Bologna’s Jews continued to live in safety. Like many Italian Jews, Franco’s family was well integrated in Italian society. Franco attended public elementary school. 1933–39: When Franco was seven, Mussolini enforced “racial” laws against the Jews: Franco was expelled from school and went instead to a Jewish school hastily organized in makeshift quarters in one of Bologna’s synagogues. Franco could not understand why he had to leave his friends just because he was Jewish. His father died in 1939, and he moved with his mother and older brother, Lelio, to Turin, where he began religious school. 1 ushmm.org 1940–44: Mussolini was overthrown in July 1943. Two months later, German forces occupied Italy and gained control of the north, the part where Franco’s family and most of Italy’s Jews lived. The Italians had been protecting the Jews, but now Germany controlled Italy. The Cesana family went into hiding in the mountains. To evade the Germans, they moved from hut to hut. Lelio joined the Justice and Liberty partisan group. Though only 12, Franco joined as well, proud that so many Jews were fighting in the Italian resistance. Franco was shot by Germans while on a scouting mission in the mountains. His body was returned to his mother on his 13th birthday.
