World League 2003 Final Report 81 13th Portugal BelowBelow pparar pperformance...erformance...

Competing in their fourth World League, a young and developing Portuguese side has still got plenty of ground to make up on the big guns in the international Volleyball world but the gap is narrowing. De- spite only picking up two wins all tournament the ground work for a successful era in Portuguese Volley- ball is there. Players such as Jose Joao and the 21-year-old Hugo Gaspar are the best illustrations of the blossoming talent in the team, ranked 16th in the world, and it is this kind of talent Portuguese coach Juan Diaz Mario is des- perate to develop. In the 2003 campaign it was never going to be easy. With Brazil and Italy in the same pool, Portugal, with reason, had targeted their matches against Germany where they could come out on the right side of the ledger and gain further confidence. But Portugal struggled for consistency throughout the Intercontinental Rounds and although they managed to split their four matches with Germany they failed to take a set from the two su- perpowers, despite their best efforts, until the final weekend when Portugal travelled to Brazil and lost both games by 3-1. Two victories handed Portugal the unenviable record of walking away from the tournament with the least amount of wins, least amount of sets won and the least amount of points. So there is still plenty to work for Diaz. But with the budding talent inches away from striking the right chord, there is a sneaking suspicion that Portugal is on the verge of something exciting.

World League 2003 Final Report 83 13th Venezuela Still growing...

Despite finishing bottom of Pool A behind Russia, Poland and Spain the 2003 World League signalled an improvement for Venezuela with their three vic- tories far superior than the one registered in 2002. There is no hiding the fact that the South Americans are still in the process of putting together a unit capable of competing regu- larly with the “big teams” at the top but with individual stars such as Ernardo “Harry” Gomez and Thomas Ereu in the squad, Ven- ezuela should be hitting the right note soon. The encouraging signs during the preliminaries included taking an impressive straight sets victory off Poland in Bydgoszcz. But this didn’t come until their fifth match and in the end they couldn’t capitalize on the result, proceeding to collect only two more victories against Spain. Of the four bot- tom placed teams Venezuela finished the better – on Set Ratio. Coach Miguel Cambero knows he has got the talent to work with and there were signs of the potential these naturally gifted athletes have. For much of the Volleyball world and Venezuelan fans in particular, the sooner this potential is realised the better.
