Impressions and Facts of the Park World Tour 1999 www.pwt.org Reaching out to the millions

On the eve of the Park World Tour final, on a boat cruise hosted by the Nordic Consuls, in the lights of the classic Bund, the Shanghai Education Director Sun Quan Xing starts to speak. - is a challenging , which promotes both physical and mental health. It is suitable for all ages. We have decided that it will be included in the education for all our 2,5 million students, from kindergartens to universities. Unforgettable experiences

The next day, the beautiful Botanic Garden in Shanghai is filled with young people - enthusiastic students, eagerly waiting to see the World Champions - and to try the course for themselves. Colourful balloons raise towards the skies, flowers and fanfare fill the air, with the orienteering stars in focus. - One of my best orienteering experiences ever, says multi-World Champion and Park World Tour initiator Jörgen Mårtensson, completing his last race of a 22 year career in the international world elite. Mårtensson, now strongly working for the orienteering development in China, shakes hands with Sun Quan Xing, while the new Park World Tour Champions, Gunilla Svärd and step into the spotlight. Surrounded by TV cameras and admiring students asking for their autographs, the orienteers feel like rock stars completing their World Tour in the most magnificent atmosphere. From the forest to the fortress

This year, the excitement of orienteering has amazed the crowds in five big cities in Europe and three Asian metropols. A total of 131 athletes from 23 countries have found their way in the fortress of Akershus in , past the historic university in Glasgow and through the huge Showa Kinen Park in Tokyo - proving that this sport can be practised everywhere. More than five hours of Park World Tour action has been broadcast on TV, with pictures in more than 125 countries. In China, a weekly series presents the sport to 60 million viewers. With Shanghai introducing orienteering on the school scheme for 2,5 million students - and Beijing applying for the 2008 Olympic Games - another important step is taken towards making orienteering part of the Olympic programme.

Idea and Purpose

To increase the interest in and knowledge of orienteering, especially in the media and among new target groups, and to introduce orienteering in new countries. This is done by organising competitions, seminars and promotion events all over the world.

Organisation

The Park World Tour is a registered association (Föreningen Park World Tour), founded in 1995, with the endorsement of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF). The Park World Tour competitions are organised in co-operation with orienteering clubs and national orienteering federations.

Competitions

The Park World Tour series attracts the world´s top 25 female and top 25 male orienteers. They compete on 3 km courses in parks and city centres, in front of spectators and TV cameras, with winning times of 12- 15 minutes. The Tour started in 1996 and consists of 6-10 races a year. All races count in the overall standings. Prize money are awarded.

Seminars

The Park World Tour seminars introduce orienteering to students, top business managers and all kinds of target groups by means of lectures and practical exercises. In China, the Park World Tour has already organised orienteering seminars for thousands of students at several universities. The orienteering World Champion, Jörgen Mårtensson, and Anders Gärderud and Tomas Gustafson, former Olympic Champions and keen orienteers, are among the Park World Tour lecturers.
