FNAC Portugal in 2013: How to React to the Changes in the Market?
Universidade Católica Portuguesa Católica – Lisbon School of Business & Economics FNAC Portugal in 2013: How To React To The Changes In The Market? Author: Maria Ana Alexandre Advisor: Nuno Magalhães Guedes Dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MSc in Business Administration, at Universidade Católica Portuguesa, January 2013 FNAC Portugal 2013: How To React To The Changes In The Market? ABSTRACT Title: FNAC Portugal in 2013: How To React To The Changes In The Market? Author: Maria Ana Alexandre The markets are continuously changing and the markets of technological and cultural products are no exception. When FNAC opened its first store in Portugal, in 1998, the market was quite different from how it is nowadays. The client motivations as well as expectations have been drastically changing and the access to certain products is now easier than ever, especially due to the Internet. This Thesis exposes the recent policies of FNAC: the new product categories, the bet on multichannel strategy, the new store formats and the new business model. All these are part of FNAC new strategic plan – FNAC 2015. These new policies seem to be the right answer to the problems that emerged from the evolution of the markets where FNAC operates. The key markets for FNAC have been dropping in the last years and the clients’ profile has changed. At the same time that FNAC wants to overpass these challenges it wants to expand its business in Portugal. The company should not only look at the bright side of these new policies but also look at the possible negative outcomes and be prepared for them. -

An Interview with F**K B*****S
An Interview with F**k B*****s Bittles‘ Magazine | Interview As future music historians will no doubt agree, there is a lot of derivative and unimaginative MOR-type music in the world right now. From the pop-dance of Avicii to the wet indie of Bastille there is enough rubbish around to make the average music purist’s ears bleed. What we really need is a record that hits the listener hard, like a well needed slap to the face. That not only alienates your ›nice‹ friends but makes your parents scream »What the fuck is that crap you’re playing? It’s not even music, you know!« If this is the type of album that you’ve been looking for then well done you. May I introduce you to my new best friend Slow Focus which is brought to you by those mischievous noise mavericks Fuck Buttons. Wilful experimentation and messed-up electronics feature heavily in a set that positively roars at the listener like some strangely deranged beast (this is a good thing, of course). Yet please don’t stop reading here having convinced yourself that you have no interest in playing an album of unlistenable noise. What would be the point in that? No, the reason I am so in love with this record right now is the fact that its seven long instrumental tracks also manage to contain moments of heart stopping beauty that could even make Jason Statham cry. This is music more comparable to the prog-rock sound of the seventies, or the reckless sonic experimentation of the late sixties than the conveyor belt like production of most music released today. -

Facing the Future with a Foot in the Past Americana, Nostalgia, and the Humanization of Musical Experience
Facing the Future with a Foot in the Past Americana, Nostalgia, and the Humanization of Musical Experience by Christine Sarah Steinbock A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014 Christine Sarah Steinbock ii Abstract Facing the Future with a Foot in the Past Americana, Nostalgia, and the Humanization of Musical Experience Americana, a musical genre defined by its place in a lineage of roots music styles and a nostalgic outlook is enjoying increasing mainstream popularity in response to general societal unease about the fast pace of social change and the increasing presence of technology in everyday life. Americana artists’ invocations of the past cultivate a psychic landscape of collective memory that quells fears of change by asserting the sustained value of the past. Instead of actively resisting social and technological change Americana artists, listeners and promoters embrace technology in service of a nostalgically- motivated humanization and disintermediation of musical performance and consumption. Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings (who perform as “Gillian Welch”) and their 2011 album The Harrow & the Harvest are analyzed vis-à-vis the ways in which their musical and visual invocations of the rural past dialogue with a psychic landscape of collective memory. iii Acknowledgements I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to study in the Music and Culture program at Carleton and the privilege of working alongside such dedicated scholars, professors and fellow students alike. I want to especially thank my supervisor, Dr.
