Within our capitalistic society, much if not all the music we consume is to be regarded as commodities. Musical products are subject to numerous processes, rules and regulations, one of which being copyright. Essentially, copyright enables the musical product as commodity, and as David Hesmondhalgh puts it, has become the main means of commodifying culture. A musical practice that is particularly at odds with copyright is sampling, which makes use of previously recorded material through recombination and re-contextualisation. For the use of samples, a proper copyright license must be in place, whether the sample-based song is being monetized on or released for free. However, hip hop producers often do not comply in licensing the use of copyrighted material in their music, which challenges not only the copyright regime, but also copyright as a means of commodification. Over the years, copyright has become an extensive set of rights, resulting in the criminalization of unlicensed use of samples, but not in prevention, as technological advancements have made sampling a more widespread and accessible practice. Within this thesis, the sample-based work of Madlib as released on his Madlib Invazion label is used as a case study to map the current copyright regime, the costs of licensing and the risks of unlicensed sampling.

Han drev sin egen online matlagnings show med titeln "Action In The Kitchen". Efter att han bröt benet i köket bestämde han sig för att enbart koncentrera sig på musiken. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

Moore The dissertation is divided into two sections: an essay titled “The Self-ish Genre: Questions of Authorial Selfhood and Ethics in Creative Nonfiction” and an essay collection titled, Person, Place, and Thing. “The Self-ish Genre: Questions of Authorial Selfhood and Ethics in Creative Nonfiction” engages with late modern and postmodern theories of selfhood in the service of moving towards an understanding of the ethical nature of the authorial character in the personal essay. I will position the authorial character within the framework of Paul Ricouer’s construction of the narrative self, identifying it as an artifact of the work of giving an account of oneself. I will consider how this artifact can be imagined to function inside a Levinasian ethics, and ask whether or not the authorial character can adequately serve as an “Other” with whom both the reader interacts in their own formations of self. Finally, I will turn to Judith Butler to suggest a way the ethical act of giving an account of oneself can be rescued from the postmodern disposition of the self.

    Rebekah Ratlif 9/12/2011 Demo Production Phil Ek: Producer, Engineer, Mixer Phil Ek, producer of artists such as The Shins, Modest Mouse, Fleet Foxes, and Band of Horses, prides himself on filling three roles of the music production process: producer, engineer, and mixer. It’s fair to say that he is successful in all three areas. In the nineties Ek moved to Seattle after graduating high school and started in the clubs of Seattle where he worked as an audio engineer. After working for a year and a half, he moved on to recording small demos for anyone that came to him. He would record three song demos on cassette so the artists could try to get gigs in clubs and venues. Ek then attended the Art Institute of Seattle to study recording. During this time he met John Endino, producer of Nirvana, and ended up assisting him in his studios. During his time with Endino and recording demos at Sub Pop records he met members of the band Built to Spill. Ek, creating a good relationship with the band, was asked to record their record “There’s Nothing Wrong with Love” which went on to reach #24 on Pitchfork’s Top 100 albums of the 1990s. Ever since recording that album, Ek has been unstoppable, recording several other Built to Spill records, two number one albums in the US, and two in the US top 40. The Role of the Producer The idea of what a producer actually does could be diferent for many people, depending on their perspective in or outside of the music industry.
