Of the video, Gruska shares: “I never met my grandmother. She died when my mom was 16. At this point she's been gone for longer than she was alive. What little I knew was that she was a successful supporting actress in the movies. I knew she was beautiful, funny, eccentric, and the life of the party. However, these desirable traits are often paired with their opposites, as we all have seen. I've only really been able to speculate on how dynamic a person she might have been...until now. Because she died at such a young age--leaving her family behind—I could only imagine her through the filter of her children--my family-- and because of their loss, her life has always been tinged with sadness in my mind. I was never fully able to comprehend the range of who she might have been. Last month, when my uncle handed me this Super 8 footage of my grandma (with her mother and her father) taken between the 1940's and the 1970's, I was completely blown away. I was finally able to see her in action and watching this footage was like meeting her for the first time. I saw my mother in her. I saw my uncles in her, my sister, and myself.

ALUMNI GAZETTE The Social Work of Music Jazz composer and pianist Darrell Grant ’84E measures his success not only by how his music sounds, but also by what it does. b y Karen McCally ’02 (PhD) Darrell Grant ’84E has been a celebrat- ed jazz composer and pianist since early in his career, when his first solo project, Black Art (Criss Cross), was named by the New York Times as one of the top 10 jazz recordings of 1994. In 1997, he took an unusual step for a ris- ing jazz artist. He moved out of New York City to Portland, Oregon, a place much less known for its jazz scene. Grant and his wife, Anne McFall ’85E, who studied viola at Eastman, were eager to start a new life there. Yet it was also a place Grant felt would allow him, to a far greater extent than in New York City, to form meaningful connections with audi- ences and with his community. “One of the things I was interested in was the idea of doing well by doing good,” says Grant, who teaches at Portland State University. “If you’re going to create some- thing, you get to determine the measures for success. MUSIC 351: Psychedelic Rock of the 1960s Spring 2015, T 7:00–9:40 p.m., ENS-280 Instructor: Eric Smigel ([email protected]) M-235, office hours: Mondays & Tuesdays, 3:00–4:00 p.m. This is a lecture class that surveys psychedelic rock music and culture of the 1960s. Psychedelic music played an important role in the development of rock music as a predominant art form during one of the most formative decades in American history. Emerging along with the powerful counterculture of hippies in the mid-1960s, psychedelic rock reflects key elements of the “Love Generation,” including the peace movement, the sexual revolution, the pervasive use of recreational drugs (especially marijuana and LSD), and the growing awareness of Eastern philosophy. The main centers of countercultural activity—the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco and the London Underground—drew a high volume of media exposure, resulting in the famous “Summer of Love” and culminating in popular music festivals in Monterey, Woodstock, and Altamont. Students in this course will examine the music and lyrics of a selection of representative songs by The Grateful Dead, The Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and other bands closely associated with the burgeoning psychedelic scene. LASSETER May 2013 Copyright M.E. Lasseter 2013 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This thesis traces the various physical and metaphorical journeys south of Chicago musician Andrew Bird. Using what historical record is publicly available, I examine Bird’s formal musical training. I then explore the years between 1995 and 2001, or what I call Bird’s period of apprenticeship. Next is an exploration of the canonical narratives surrounding the blues of the Mississippi Delta, especially the music of Charley Patton. When Andrew Bird encountered a canon, or dominant histories and meanings of Southern music that influence how musicians play and how audiences interpret that music, he began to react against that canon in his own compositions and performances.
