4 trip overview

Trekking via Namche Bazaar we follow the route to Everest Base Camp via the Gokyo valley and Cho La Pass route and into Lobuche beside the Khumbuglacier.

As part of our acclimatisation programme we visit Everest Base Camp and make an ascent of the classic viewpoint of Kala Patthar, where we enjoy some of the finest views of the world’s highest peak. Then crossing the , we climb up to the Kongma La pass which gives us access to the valley of the and the summer grazing settlement of Chukkung. From here we move up to Island Peak base camp for our main objective, Island Peak. The ascent of this 6000 metre peak in the shadow of the huge Lhotse face is a real ‘alpine experience’ in every sense, involving fine climbing in exposed situations amongst breathtaking scenery.

This is one epic challenge.

Our trip includes three days to climb Island Peak which includes an extra time in case of bad weather or if you require extra time for acclimatisation.

6 expeRience Needed

Generally, the trekking conditions on this Nepal expedition are relatively straight forward, following good paths on donkey & yak trails for the main part. However there is a lot of challenging terrain and ridge sections on this trek and you need to be comfortable with heights. The Khumbu is Nepal’s most popular trekking destination and the area is well supplied with teashops and lodges. It should be noted, however, that trekking above 3000 metres makes greater demands on the body than walking at low elevations and can be challenging even for fit hikers.

Our itinerary is well staged to allow the best possible acclimatisation and includes extra days at Namche Bazaar and Gokyo. You will also reach significant height of almost 5500m before you attempt Island Peak.

This gives our groups the best possible preparation for the final summit approach.

We have built an additional day into the itinerary for bad weather.

expeRience required

The Ultimate Island Peak and Everest Base Camp Expedition with 2 high passes is a tough and arduous trek and climb. It is meant to be challenging. You must be a fit, regular hillwalker to take part, used to long, consecutive days walking in the British Mountains, preferably in Winter.

You should have experience of walking steep, boulder-strewn paths where the use of hands has been essential to scramble upwards over rocky steps. Previous experience of Himalayan trekking is preferable, but not essential as long as you are a very regular and committed hill-walker.

As this route takes you over remote high passes and a Himalayan peak, experience of having been to 5000-metres before would be ideal.
