If you are interested in submitting a FOIA request for access to any of the unavailable records or have any questions about these collections or series, please contact our archival staff at 1-800- 410-8354, outside the US at 1-805-577-4012, or email [email protected] KOJELIS, LINAS J.: Files, 1981-1988 Public Liaison, White House Office of (Ethnic Groups, Roman Catholics, Defense and Foreign Policy) Linas Kojelis (1955- ) is the son of Lithuanian parents who immigrated to the United States after the Soviet Union occupied Lithuania during World War II. He joined the Office of Public Liaison shortly after Faith Whittlesey became head of that office in May 1983. Kojelis initially handled the ethnic portfolio, dealing with issues and organizations pertaining to Americans of eastern and southern European heritage (primarily), Armenian Americans, Arab Americans, and Asian Americans. When the Public Liaison office was reorganized in late 1985, Kojelis was promoted to a new position in which he focused on raising support for the Administration’s defense and foreign policies. Additionally, Kojelis was involved throughout his Public Liaison tenure with Roman Catholic and anti-Communist issues and groups. In April 1988, Kojelis left the White House to become the State Department’s United States Coordinator for Refugee Affairs. Kojelis’ collection includes documents from 1981 and 1982 that were borrowed from other Public Liaison staff collections for his use. There are 7 series in this collection. The US government had promised to shelter 20,000 Kosovars expelled from their homeland by Serb-dominated Yugoslav forces (Michael Kranish and Mary Leonard, 1999). As refugees hit American soil, stories of family reunion and community solidarity were told in the local and national press. True, there had been earlier rallies in Washington organized by Albanian-American organizations that had hinted at the wish, on the part of the Albanian immigrants, to weigh upon US foreign policy towards the Balkans.

Built in 1944, the monument initially represented the memory of the victims of the Lidice Massacre in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia while simultaneously symbolizing the patriotic efforts of the Phillips community during World War II. After the memorial’s rededication in 1984 the meaning of the monument to the community shifted. While still commemorating Lidice, the annual commemorations gave rise to the Phillips Czechoslovakian Community Festival held each year. It was an ex- traordinary experience to see archaeological artifacts attributed to the palace of arguably one of the most important kings in an- cient history, Ashurbanipal. Besides being a remarkable scholar and military strategist, he established the first and most impres- sive library of the ancient world. Within his incredible collec- tion of clay tablets lay one of the greatest epic tales ever told, the Gilgamesh. It is all the more appropriate that on the final day of the exhibit was a contemporary Assyrian folk music concert or- ganized by renowned Assyrian musician Honiball Joseph, founder of the Gilgamesh Art & Culture Foundation. The Assyrian Foundation of America (AFA) is a proud continuing sponsor of Honiball and his organization. Honiball Joseph is an accomplished musician, composer, conductor, pianist, and music educator with over thirty years of extensive international experience. In addition to numer- ous recitals, he has organized, conducted, arranged and composed several orchestral and vocal concerts throughout California as well as at the most prestigious concert halls in his native Iran. With the patronage of the AFA, Honiball has organized a unique repeat performance of the British museum concert here in San Francisco at the Marines’ Memorial Theater on Saturday, September 14, 2019. This is a great family event and I urge everyone, particularly those who were unable to join the festivities in London, to attend this concert that promises to be a spectacular and memo- rable experience.

    ZfO JECES 67 ı 2018 ı 3 ı 375-396 375 Estonian by Recreation: Forging Ethnic Imagination through Communal Experience in Urban, Rural and Musical Spaces Maarja Merivoo-Parro* ZUSAMMENFASSUNG In der Freizeit zum Esten: Der Aufbau ethnischer Vorstellungskraft durch gemeinschaftliche Erfahrung im städtischen, ländlichen und musikalischen Umfeld Der Artikel befasst sich mit den gemeinschaftlichen Freizeitaktivitäten von Angehörigen des estnischen Exils im Amerika des Kalten Krieges und beruht auf dem Gedanken, dass diese Gemeinschaften bei dem Bemühen darum, dass ihnen die jungen Leute Zeit und Aufmerksamkeit widmen, nach Bereichen und Orten suchten, um gemeinsam ihr Estnisch- Sein auszuleben. Städtische Orte waren zum einen ständige Einrichtungen wie Estnische Häuser, zum anderen große Kulturveranstaltungen an wechselnden Orten wie z. B. die Est- nischen Westküsten-Tage (West Coast Estonian Days) oder das Festival ESTO mit Teil- nehmern aus aller Welt. Die ländlichen Gegenden blieben Pfadfindern und Pfadfinderin- nen vorbehalten. Obgleich sie auch größeren Zusammenschlüssen angehörten, war bei der Tätigkeit der amerikanisch-estnischen Pfadfinder eine spezielle estnische Ausrichtung spürbar. Da außerdem die Esten in den USA nicht in Enklaven, sondern über das Land ver- streut lebten, führten sie eine neuartige Form des Pfadfindertums ein, bei dem sich die ge- meinschaftliche Praxis zu einer individuellen veränderte. Während die wichtige Rolle der Chormusik im exil-estnischen Leben sowohl in kultureller als auch in politischer Hinsicht bereits nachgewiesen wurde, kann die bislang deutlich weniger erforschte Populärmusik in ähnlicher Weise dazu beitragen, die Freizeitgestaltung auf einer stärker persönlichen Ebe- ne nachzuvollziehen. Da die Esten in den USA geistigen und praktischen Zugriff auf die globale Popmusikszene hatten, liegt die Vermutung nahe, dass sie in mancherlei Hinsicht in der estnischen Musikgeschichte eine Vorreiterrolle eingenommen haben.
