Suffering from an accidental overdose of cordrazine, Doctor Leonard McCoy goes back to s Earth and saves a woman's life, unwittingly changing the course of time and erasing the Enterprise and the Federation from history. In orbit around an unexplored planet, the USS Enterprise is on red alert as it passes through violent time distortions surrounding the planet. As the ship plots its orbit, Montgomery Scott warns that the control circuits are threatening to overload. No sooner does Captain Kirk acknowledge the report, the helm console on the bridge explodes and Lieutenant Sulu is injured. Scott takes the helm as Doctor McCoy is called to the bridge for emergency first aid. Scott questions : City on the Edge of Forever the ship should break orbit, but Spock advises against it — the ship is literally passing through ripples in time and it is of great scientific importance that they remain and investigate. Kirk agrees and orders Uhura to broadcast to Command his past week's log entriesdetailing the unusual readings on the instruments that has diverted the Enterprise to this planet. McCoy arrives and diagnoses Sulu with a heart flutter. He prepares a hypo of cordrazinewarned by Kirk that it is "tricky stuff. Scott reports that the Enterprise is nearly clear of the time ripples, which Spock confirms, with one heavy displacement directly ahead. The Enterprise shudders violently as it collides with it, causing Dr. Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever to slip on the helm console and inject the loaded hypospray into his abdomen, emptying its contents into his bloodstream. Kirk and Spock rush to his aid, but McCoy darts up in a panic. Raving and screaming about "killers" and "assassins", McCoy breaks free from the concerned bridge crew and flees the bridge via the turbolift. Kirk orders a security alert. McCoy evades the security teams and enters the room where he attacks the transporter chief Lieutenant Kyle from behind, steals his phaser and energizes the transporter. On the bridge, Kirk has returned from sickbaywhere the ship's medical department in uncertain of what McCoy's condition will do to him. Spock, having consulted the library computerdiscovers that patients exposed to such a level of cordrazine would fail to recognize acquaintances and become hysterically convinced they were in mortal danger, becoming extremely dangerous to himself or anyone else nearby. Suddenly, the transporter room calls the bridge and informs Kirk that McCoy has beamed down to the planet, with the transporter at the time being focused on the center of the time disruptions on the surface. Kirk orders a landing party to be set up to retrieve Dr. Kirk, Spock, Scott, Uhura, Gallowayand a security officer transport down and discover a ruined city with an unusual looking portal in the midst. As Uhura and Scott's teams search for Dr. McCoy, Kirk and Spock investigate the object. Spock reports that it is indeed the center of all the time disruptions, although he cannot explain how it is possible. The object, though it appears inert, is in fact generating powerful enough waves of displacement that the Enterprise could detect it millions of miles away. Kirk asks what it is and a loud, booming voice intones from the object " A question! Since before your sun burned hot in space and before your race was born, I have awaited a question. Spock deduces that the Guardian is a time portal — a gateway to other times and dimensions, which the Guardian confirms is correct and activates its portal, offering Kirk and Spock a gateway into Earth 's past. Suddenly, McCoy cries out — he has been cornered by the search parties. Still madly convinced they are killers and assassins, he tries to escape, but is subdued by a nerve pinchcourtesy of Spock. Kirk ponders if they could use the Guardian of Forever to take McCoy backwards a day in time to make certain that his accident never happens. However, the portal's speed is moving fairly quickly, jumping from century to century. Spock suddenly realizes that his is capable of recording images at the same speed and activates it, just as McCoy regains consciousness. As the landing party is transfixed on the Guardian and the images it is showing, McCoy hears the Guardian explain that this portal will allow people to go anywhere in time. With the landing party momentarily distracted, McCoy jumps up and runs towards the portal until it is too late to stop him. The doctor jumps through it and the portal shuts down. When Kirk wonders where he went, the voice of the Guardian Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever " He has passed into… what was… ". Uhura suddenly discovers that she's completely lost contact with the Enterprise. Scott finds nothing wrong with the communicatorsbut the Guardian further explains that " Your vessel, your beginning, all that you knew is gone. Uhura tells Kirk she's frightened, but, Kirk is equally as disturbed. The tricorder scans Spock took just as McCoy left reveal that he jumped back to the early 20th century and can approximate when they should jump through the portal, putting them possibly a month or a week prior to McCoy's arrival. Kirk wonders how they will return to the their own time, but the Guardian tells him that if he Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever successful in mending the timeline, they will all be returned, as if none of them had gone. Scott and Uhura are skeptical about their chances, but Spock logically states that there is no alternative. Kirk, however, out of concern for his officers, tells each of the landing Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever to jump through the portal if they feel like they've waited long enough for he and Spock to return, allowing them to live in Earth's past rather than be stranded on the Guardian's planet should they fail to find the time date McCoy jumped to. Scott and Uhura bid them good luck as Kirk and Spock simultaneously jump through the portal, backwards through time. They arrive in New York Citycirca Kirk recognizes the period from old photographswhich Spock clarifies that an economic upheaval had occurred at this point in time. As passersby scrutinize Kirk and Spock's unusual appearance, they make for a Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever alley to get out of sight. Kirk notices some contemporary clothes on a fire escape and elects to steal them, as their Starfleet uniforms are not suited for the time period. However, they are approached by a police officercaught red-handed. As Kirk awkwardly tries to explain Spock's Vulcan ears, the policeman prepares to arrest them. However, Spock disables him with a nerve pinch and they escape to the basement of what they soon learn is the 21st Street Mission. After changing clothes, Spock laments that locked in his tricorder are the images of how McCoy will change history. Unfortunately, he would need to tie it into the Enterprise computer to access the information. Kirk wonders if he could build a computer aid using contemporary materials, but, Spock is dubious as to its success. As their voices carry, they are accosted by the proprietor of the mission, Edith Keeler. Kirk apologizes for their intrusion and tells her the truth as to why they came down there — that they had stolen their clothes Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever they had no money and were being chased by a policeman. Believing them to be victims of the poor economy, Edith offers them jobs at the mission doing chores at fifteen cents an hour for ten hours a day. Kirk and Spock agree and set to cleaning up the basement. Hours later, they are eating their complimentary dinner of soup and bread with the other poverty-stricken citizens, when Keeler takes the stage and gives a motivational speech about how she believes the days ahead are worth living for, theorizing that one day Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever, man will be able to harness the power of the atomwhich could ultimately propel them into outer space, where they will be able to find ways to feed the hungry millions of the world, to cure their diseases, and give mankind hope and a common future. Kirk is impressed with her foresight into the future, while Spock believes it to be merely intuition. Afterwards, Keeler compliments Kirk on his and Spock's work in the basement and offers them further work and sets them up with a " flop " an apartment in the building where she lives. Several days later, Spock is hard at work attempting to build the computer aid to access the information in his tricorder, but he laments the speed at which the work is progressing as the technology of the 20th century is barely adequate for his needs. The next day, Spock observes a man using tools for finely Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever work and steals them from the mission's toolbox using his sensitive Vulcan ears to break the combination. Keeler quickly discovers the theft and is very upset that Spock did it, but Kirk is able to convince her that Spock meant no ill will, and would return the tools when he was finished. Edith agrees, as she has become fascinated by Kirk, and asks him to walk her home. The two become close as Keeler questions where Kirk comes from and how he sees the world the same way that she does. As they walk away, Spock looks concerned. After a few more days, Spock is finally able to access the information in the tricorder, where he discovers Edith Keeler's Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever — her death the result of a traffic accident. As Kirk enters, he attempts to replay it for him, but another image appears — a newspaper article fromdetailing a meeting Keeler has with President Franklin D. Unfortunately, the strain on the computer aid overloads it, requiring extensive repair work before it can be used again. Kirk believes within six years, Keeler will become nationally famous, but Spock tells Kirk their caretaker will die this year. Spock tells Kirk of Keeler's obituary, and that Edith Keeler is the focal point in time that both they and Dr. McCoy will be drawn to. Kirk ponders what the correct course of history is, if she lives or dies and what role McCoy, especially in his cordrazine-induced condition will play in it — does he kill her or prevent her from being killed? Spock asks Kirk the most pressing question of all: Suppose they discover to set history right, Edith Keeler must die? Kirk cannot answer and he wrestles with his growing affection for her and the role she will ultimately play in history. In a back alley elsewhere in the city, Dr. McCoy arrives, screaming out to the "assassins" and the "murderers", garnering the attention of a homeless manawestruck with fear. He runs, but McCoy pursues him, promising he won't kill him. He eventually catches up to him, but, McCoy soon wonders where he is. The constellations in the sky lead him to believe that he's on Earth, but, even in his manic state, he believes it's some kind of trick. He begins sobbing hysterically at how hospitals in the past needed to use needles and sutures to attend to people and loses consciousness. The derelict picks McCoy's pocket and takes his phaser. Unfortunately, as he examines it, he activates the overload circuit and disintegrates himself. The next morning, McCoy looks in terrible shape. As he staggers around the streets, still suffering the effects of his cordrazine overdose, he discovers the 21st Street Mission. He goes inside, where Edith is serving coffee. She notices his condition and offers to help, but he says he must not be found, so she takes him to a cot in the back room where he won't be disturbed. As they depart, Spock takes over for her pouring the coffee, missing Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever by only a few seconds. Shortly thereafter, Spock is able to repair the computer aid and accesses the tricorder again. According to the scans taken from the time vortexSpock is convinced that McCoy prevented Edith Keeler's death in a traffic accident as she was meant to in the "correct" timeline. As the peace negotiations dragged on, Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany had time to complete their heavy water experiments, allowing them to develop the atomic bomb first, with which Germany conquered the world. Spock tells Kirk they must stop McCoy. Kirk wonders when she has to die, but, Spock informs him Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever while they can extrapolate general events, they cannot pinpoint exact movements at exact time. Kirk, his heart already breaking, tells Spock that he believes he is in love with Edith Keeler. Spock grimly reminds Kirk: Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever Keeler must die. McCoy regains consciousness, almost fully recovered now, with Keeler at Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever bedside. While it appears to him that he's back on Earth around or '25, Keeler asks him if he would care to try for City on the Edge of Forever, The | Star Trek

Trivia Harlan Ellison 's original story also described the architecture of the city of the time portal as "covered with strange runes". Somehow, this was interpreted as intending for the city to be depicted as being covered by the remnants of architectural ruins when visualized for the filming on set. Ellison believed that he might have slurred what he was trying to say, which led to the misinterpretation. However, he admitted that the set design was of very high quality. Kirk William Shatner leads a landing party to look for McCoy, and they come across an ancient glowing stone archway, which turns out to be the cause of the time distortions. They discover the archway to be sentient, and this "Guardian of Forever" voiced by Bartell LaRue explains that it is a doorway to any time and place. The landing party suddenly loses contact with the Enterpriseand the Guardian informs them that McCoy has altered the past, and that the Enterpriseand all that they knew, is gone. When the Guardian declares that "many such journeys are possible", a brokenhearted Kirk simply states "Let's get the hell out of here," and the landing party beams off the planet back to the Enterprise. The writing of this episode took over ten months, from the initial pitch by Harlan Ellison to the final re-write by Gene Roddenberry. Steven W. Carabatsos and D. Fontanaboth story editors on the show, undertook re-writes of the teleplay, and changes have also been attributed to producer Gene L. The experience led to animosity between Ellison and Roddenberry for the rest of the latter's life, in particular over a claim by Roddenberry that Ellison had the character Scotty dealing drugs in one version of the script. Mistakes were made in the set design with an instruction for " runes " misconstrued as a request for "ruins". Roddenberry was aiming to have the best science fiction writers produce scripts for the show, and had identified Ellison immediately; at the time, Ellison had been nominated for the Writers Guild of America Award for Outstanding Script for a Television Anthology with his script for The Outer Limits episode " Demon with a Glass Hand ;" he went on to win. Ellison considered that it would have a heartrending effect on Kirk. In MarchEllison pitched the idea to Roddenberry, who accepted it. A week later, he turned in his first script treatment. Producer Robert H. Justman later recalled that he thought it was brilliant. When writing it, Ellison did not have as many restrictions as some of the later writers; he was hired prior to the series bible being created. The first version introduced Lieutenant Richard Beckwith, who is sentenced to death after he kills a fellow crewman when he is threatened with the exposure of his involvement in the illegal drug trade. Ellison had included this element, since he expected the starship to be like any other military unit, having at least some unlawful people. Because of the planet's atmosphere, they have to wear environmental suits. It is inhabited by several 9-foot-tall 2. Kirk then asks to see the history of the United States on the machine, and as it reaches the Great Depression of the s, Beckwith dives into the projection and vanishes. The guardians inform Kirk that history has been altered, and upon returning to Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever Enterprise, they discover that the vessel is now manned by renegades. They fight their way back to the transporter room and return to the planet, where the Guardians allow Kirk and Spock to pursue Beckwith into the past. They are informed by the Guardians that Beckwith prevented the death of Edith Koestler, and as in the final version, Kirk falls in love with her; in this version, however, he does so knowing that she must die in the end. Roddenberry disagreed with some of Kirk's actions in the first draft, and he asked Ellison to rewrite the treatment without pay. The redraft took a further five weeks, after which Roddenberry gave more notes and Ellison took another two weeks to respond. There were still plans to film the episode in the first half of the season at that point, as a version included Yeoman Janice Rand Grace Lee Whitney. When a version was received on May 13, Roddenberry and the executives at Desilu and NBC were all relieved—there had been concerns over the amount of time taken, as scripts were being pitched, written, and approved in the time taken for Ellison to revise his outline. This version dropped the environmental suits Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever to cost, and rewrote the information given to Kirk by the Guardians, making it more general and less Earth -specific. It also changed Edith Kostler's surname to Keeler. However, the majority of the plot points were unchanged. Justman registered immediate concerns over the potential cost of attempting to film the treatment. He had particular concerns about a time portal effect, a scene involving a mammoth and the number of exterior and night shoots that would be required. Despite this, Roddenberry asked Ellison to turn it into a shooting script and set aside a desk for him in the assistant director's room, expecting him to attend the office every day until he finished it. He would play loud rock and roll music in the office, and then leave it for the set. On one occasion story editor John D. Black caught him on set during the filming of " Mudd's Women " Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever had him escorted back to the office. The music went on, and Black went back to tell Ellison to turn it down, but the writer had already climbed out the window and left. Justman's initial glee at receiving the script was short-lived. He realized quickly that it was unfilmable due to cost, and the characters were not behaving as per the writer's guide. One such exchange between Kirk and Spock had the Vulcan character accusing humans of being barbaric, while Kirk saying Spock was ungrateful because humans were more advanced than Vulcans. Justman thought it was a good script, but could never be re-written and filmed in time for the first season. Ellison was asked to revise it once more, [12] with the issues blamed on requests from NBC, [13] and submitted a further version a week later. The production team was starting to lose patience, as he was not revising it in line with their requests, and he began arguing with Justman over the budget issues. Justman wrote a memo immediately to fellow producer Gene L. Coon, saying that after five months, Ellison had failed to reduce the budget requirements for the episode to something that could be filmed. Roddenberry and Justman both spoke to Ellison, seeking further changes, but failed. William Shatner was sent to Ellison's house to try to get the writer to reconcile. Ellison suggested that Shatner had a personal interest in having the script revised because Leonard Nimoy had more lines than he did in Ellison's version, and had spent the time on the couch line Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever. Carabatsos replaced the new characters with an accident involving McCoy and an overdose of adrenalin and removed the Guardians of Forever, replacing them with a time travel portal. Ellison subsequently accused him of "taking a chainsaw " to the script. Roddenberry disliked the new version sufficiently that he convinced Ellison to come back and rewrite it again. On December 19 Ellison submitted a further revised teleplay, dated December 1. Justman suggested in a memo that Roddenberry might be able to rewrite the latest version to one that could be usable. Taking this advice in hand, Roddenberry rewrote the script over the Christmas—New Year period, handing in a new version on January 9, His changes included the elimination of the evil version of the Enterprise and the addition of some comedy elements. Justman was pleased with Roddenberry's changes and told Coon that it was close to being filmable but that he still expected it to exceed the budget for a single episode. Dorothy Fontana was hired as a new story editor, replacing Carabatsos. She had previously been Roddenberry's secretary and was well aware of the script's problems from reading the previous versions. When she arrived at work for her first day in her new role, Roddenberry gave her a copy of his revision and told her to try rewriting it. She later referred to that day as "walking into a hornets' nest", and the script itself as a "live grenade". Among the changes in her version was the introduction of the drug cordrazine. Ellison specifically criticized this change, as his most recent version of the script called for an alien creature's venom to cause the symptoms in McCoy. He said that "Gene [Roddenberry] preferred having an accomplished surgeon act in such a boneheaded manner that he injects himself with a deadly drug! Justman praised Fontana's version, saying that it was the version that was most likely to be shot. But he suggested that it had now lost the "beauty and mystery inherent in the screenplay as Harlan originally wrote it". He said that he felt bad, because if he had not seen Ellison's earlier versions then he would probably have been "thrilled" with Fontana's version. Still unsatisfied with the script, Roddenberry set about rewriting it once more, titling the result, dated February Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever, the final draft. Coon and only supervised by Roddenberry. https://static.s123-cdn-static.com/uploads/4572793/normal_5fc3be6384b8c.pdf https://static.s123-cdn-static.com/uploads/4570973/normal_5fc4274115ad2.pdf https://static.s123-cdn-static.com/uploads/4573012/normal_5fc4f2d8d9eb8.pdf https://static.s123-cdn-static.com/uploads/4570043/normal_5fc53cc61a9d3.pdf https://static.s123-cdn-static.com/uploads/4569527/normal_5fc3fe5d23e26.pdf https://static.s123-cdn-static.com/uploads/4570361/normal_5fc41abe7b239.pdf
