ORIENTEERING

The of wilderness is coming to town.

th October 27 at South County Park in Punta Gorda

A first for Punta Gorda and Southwest Florida! This will be first orienteering event in a Charlotte County park and the surrounding area. Navigate to checkpoints in the park, on nearby streets, other parks and school grounds and the wilderness in between!

Three different levels: Leisure – 2.5 km - for the very young, family groups and those with no and experience. The participants will navigate to checkpoints within the park and adjoining block. Intermediate 3.5 km - for those with some experience reading a map. Checkpoints will be a bit more challenging and the will cover a larger area. Adventure 7.5 km - for experienced orienteers and adventure racers wishing to sharpen their navigation skills. The course will cover terrain from South County Park to Airport Road, Pacific Ave to Cooper. Choosing the right route to each checkpoint will be important to getting the best time.

Date and time: Saturday October 27 th , Registration opens at: 10:30 Starts between 11:00 and 1:00 PM All participants must report back to the start/finish by 3 PM. Bring a lunch and enjoy reviewing your route and comparing times with others. Cameras welcome to record this first event!

Entries: Enter at the event but please contact the meet director Gord Hunter [email protected] so that a pre- printed map can be prepared and reserved for you. Otherwise you may have to copy your course from a master map.

Entry fee: $10 for individuals and groups using one map. Discount for Florida Orienteering members and for JROTC and scout groups. Contact the meet director for details.

Course are supplied by the event. are not required but you can bring one if you wish. Using GPS for navigation will not be helpful.

Directions to South County Park : From I-75: Take exit 164 West onto Duncan Road (later named Marion Ave) After 1.3 miles turn left [south] onto Cooper Street. Park will be 0.7 miles on left
