Preliminary Notes to this Document:

I originally made this translation as part of an assignment for some MA coursework I did in 2010 as part of a directed reading course in Old Iranian. The Young Avestan text, as presented here, was taken from the corpus of the Thesaurus Indogermanischer Text- und Sprachmaterialien (TITUS: http://titus.fkidg1.uni-frankfurt.de/texte/etcs/iran/airan/avesta/avest.htm), and my grammatical parsing of it was in-part assisted by a set of unpublished notes on this text made by my then MA supervisor, Dr Selina Stewart, from a course she took in Old Iranian at Cornell University in 1987 (see bibliography). I long thought that I had lost the original MS Word document, but by fortunate chance happened to find a paper copy of the returned assignment, from which I managed to reconstitute the document. I’ve made no attempts to further revise the translation from the original 2010 document. There may be some errors of interpretation, however I have decided to upload this document to my academic website in the hopes that – in spite of the risk of remaining errors of translation and interpretation – others may yet profit from the work done here in their own private study of this text, either for studying Avestan for its own sake or from a comparative Indo-European perspective (and save yourself a bunch of work digging around in Bartholomae’s Altiranisches Wörterbuch, besides). The abbreviations used in the grammatical parsing, I hope, are more or less obvious, e.g. N. = Nominative, A. = Accusative, L. = Locative, D. = Dative, sg. = singular, du. = dual, pl. = plural., m. = masculine, f. = feminine, etc. Once I have parsed a form for an earlier verse, this parsing is usually not repeated for later ones.
