Overview of Aomori Nebuta Festival The Nebuta Festival is the highlight of summer in the city of Aomori and also marks the symbolic end of the short warm season in this northern region. The focal points of the festival are floats called Nebuta. These giant creations that often depict a historical event or a scene from a Kabuki performance, are illuminated from within. For the local people, companies, and organizations involved with the festival, it is the culmination of months of preparation, and a wave of excitement can be felt throughout the city as the event approaches. Origin of Aomori Nebuta Festival The origins of the Nebuta Festival are not entirely clear, but it is thought to have developed from a local tradition called Nemuri Nagashi. This custom involved walking outside on a couple of nights in early July carrying leaves and lanterns, and cleansing one’s body of the fatigue and drowsiness of summer by passing those negative states onto these items. The leaves were then cast into rivers and the ocean on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar (which was used in Japan until 1872). The timing of the Nemuri Nagashi overlapped with the Tanabata Festival, a celebration of the stars introduced to Japan from China during the Nara period (710– 794). The simple lanterns used in the original ritual were eventually replaced with more elaborate ones called Nebuta, into which tiredness and evil spirits were expelled before they were set afloat, and the custom came to be called Nebuta Nagashi instead. Over time, Nebuta Nagashi developed into the Nebuta Festival, which has been celebrated in some form since at least the first half of the eighteenth century. The early days of the festival featured box-shaped lanterns, while large, figure-shaped floats first appeared in the early 1800s. The current Nebuta style with colossal floats was established after World War II, which is also when the lighting inside the figures was switched from candles to electric lamps. The floats have continued to grow more elaborate over the years, in part due to the increasing popularity of the festival among tourists. In 1980, the Nebuta Festival was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Parade Route The Nebuta Festival is an annual highlight for the entire city of Aomori and brings traffic to a standstill, with roads blocked off and cars barred from the city center to make way for the float parades. The Nebuta floats are brought to the streets and paraded from 7:10 p.m. for the night parades (August 2 to 6) and from 1:00 p.m. for the daytime parade (August 7). The floats travel once around the parade loop, approximately two hours, before retiring to await their next run. The three-kilometer parade route encompasses Aomori’s city center, running along four roads. These four are Heiwa Koen Dori, National Route, Hakko Dori, and Shinmachi Dori. National Route and Shinmachi Dori are the two main thoroughfares, each with its own ambiance. The former is a wide boulevard lined by tall buildings and offers spectators a broad view of the floats, the haneto dancers, hayashi musicians, and other festival participants as they pass by. Shinmachi Dori is a narrow shopping street where the floats are much closer to the audience. Here spectators can enjoy direct and intimate moments with the majestic figures.     Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 2001 28/3–4 The Intersection of the Local and the Translocal at a Sacred Site The Case of Osorezan in Tokugawa Japan MIYAZAKI Fumiko and Duncan WILLIAMS Osorezan is often portrayed today as a remote place in the Shimokita Peninsula, a borderland between this world and the other world, where female mediums called itako communicate with the dead. This article is an attempt to sketch the historical development of Osorezan with evidence from local archives, travel records, temple collections, and inscriptions from stone monuments. With newly available local historical data, despite what temple pamphlets claim, we will establish that the cult of Jizõ (and the death-associated rituals associated with the bodhisattva) was a late Tokugawa-period development and that the female mediums who have made the site so famous only began their communications with the dead at the mountain in the twentieth century. Indeed, what the historical evi- dence suggests is that Osorezan was a complex site that developed late for a major pilgrimage destination, in which the other-worldly concern with the dead (through the worship of Jizõ) was only one aspect of the Osorezan cult. Major patrons of Osorezan in the Tokugawa period prayed for the success of their commercial enterprises there and local people viewed the site primarily as a place of hot spring cures. This article will examine the his- tory of Osorezan from its emergence as a local religious site during the mid- seventeenth until the end of the Tokugawa period, when it became a pilgrimage destination known throughout Japan.

    Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 1994 21/4 True Words, Silence, and the Adamantine Dance On Japanese Mikkyo and the Formation of the Shingon Discourse Fabio R am b e lli This paper deals with Japanese esoteric Buddhism (Mikkyo), in particular the Shingon tradition, as it relates to the emergence of new and peculiar epistemological concerns. Through a discussion of the kenmitsu system outlined by Kuroda Toshio，the paper first situates Mikkyo within the reli­ gious and institutional framework of medieval Japan, underlining its lim- inal and heterological nature as both an institutionalized discourse and a reservoir of oppositional possibilities. The paper then analyzes the forma­ tion of Shingon orthodoxy as an attempt to systematize the Tantric field in Japan through a re-organization of preexisting religious doctrines and practices. Special attention is given to the actual articulation of the ken­ mitsu episteme and its orders of significance. Finally, the paper outlines some fundamental epistemological tenets of Mikkyo discourse. Though it focuses on Shingon discourse and orthodoxy, this paper confronts basic epistemic assumptions and discursive practices common to the multi­ farious forms of esoteric Buddhism in Japan. The purpose of this paper is to describe the discourse of Japanese esoteric Buddhism (particularly the Shingon 具百 tradition) as it developed in conjunction with the emergence of a distinctive form of philosophical reflection on signs and the formation of a corpus of An earlier draft of this essay, entitled “Kenmitsu Episteme and Mikkyo Heterology: On the Semiotic Doctrines and Practices in Medieval Japan,” was presented at the 45th Annual Meeting of the Association for A sian Studies, Los Angeles, March 1993.

Andrei Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Columbia University 2016 © 2016 Talia J.Andrei All rights reserved Abstract Mapping Sacred Spaces: Representations of Pleasure and Worship in Sankei Mandara Talia J. Andrei This dissertation examines the historical and artistic circumstances behind the emergence in late medieval Japan of a short-lived genre of painting referred to as sankei mandara (pilgrimage mandalas). The paintings are large-scale topographical depictions of sacred sites and served as promotional material for temples and shrines in need of financial support to encourage pilgrimage, offering travelers worldly and spiritual benefits while inspiring them to donate liberally. Itinerant monks and nuns used the mandara in recitation performances (etoki) to lead audiences on virtual pilgrimages, decoding the pictorial clues and touting the benefits of the site shown. Addressing themselves to the newly risen commoner class following the collapse of the aristocratic order, sankei mandara depict commoners in the role of patron and pilgrim, the first instance of them being portrayed this way, alongside warriors and aristocrats as they make their way to the sites, enjoying the local delights, and worship on the sacred grounds. Together with the novel subject material, a new artistic language was created— schematic, colorful and bold. We begin by locating sankei mandara’s artistic roots and influences and then proceed to investigate the individual mandara devoted to three sacred sites: Mt. Fuji, Kiyomizudera and Ise Shrine (a sacred mountain, temple and shrine, respectively).

    Provenance of Kiseru in an Ainu Burial at the Iruekashi Site, Hokkaido

    Cultural contact and trade between the Ainu and Japanese prior to 1667: Provenance of kiseru in an Ainu burial at the Iruekashi site, Hokkaido FU K ASAWA Yuriko1 ABSTRACT Focusing on the production and circulation of kiseru (Japanese smoking devices), the aim of this paper is to discuss cultural contact and trade between the Ainu and Japanese in the 17th century. The archaeological discovery of several examples of kiseru, at the Iruekashi site including an Ainu burial that predates 1667, implies that these artefacts were diffused to Ainu by as early as the first half of the 17th century. Furthermore, results of a comparative chronological study on the morphological characteristics of artefacts suggest that they most likely originated from Kyoto. Ethnographic and historical sources have elucidated a long history of the production of such handicrafts in Kyoto, where metal materials were manufactured at specialized workshops concentrated in a specific area. Data from historical documents and archaeological excavations have also revealed how processes of technological production have changed over time. Finally, the results of this study indicate that a marine trade route connecting western Japan and Hokkaido along the cost of the Japan Sea was already in use by the middle of the 17th Century, before the establishment of the Kitamaebune trade route to the North. Of Mice and Maidens: Ideologies of Interspecies Romance in Late Medieval and Early Modern Japan Abstract Interspecies marriage (irui kon'in) has long been a central theme in Japanese literature and folklore. Frequently dismissed as fairytales, stories of interspecies marriage illuminate contemporaneous conceptions of the animal-human boundary and the anxieties surrounding it. This dissertation contributes to the emerging field of animal studies yb examining otogizoshi (Muromachi/early Edo illustrated narrative fiction) concerning elationshipsr between human women and male mice. The earliest of these is Nezumi no soshi ("The Tale of the Mouse"), a fifteenth century ko-e ("small scroll") attributed to court painter Tosa Mitsunobu. Nezumi no soshi was followed roughly a century later by a group of tales collectively named after their protagonist, the mouse Gon no Kami. Unlike Nezumi no soshi, which focuses on the grief of the woman who has unwittingly married a mouse, the Gon no Kami tales contain pronounced comic elements and devote attention to the mouse-groom's perspective.

We think most members are aware of the number of domestic problems that interfered with the continuity, but pressure being brought to bear, here is a renewed effort. One of the chief duties of any proper Renmei is to encourage the members, old or new, with sound information in order to 'feed' their interest Since we cover a reasonably wide range of entities within the Bugei traditions – Kendō, Iai-jutsu, Naginata, occasionally Sō-jutsu, and general or specific historical subjects – it is a pretty broad mandate and we try our best despite sidetracking by the Internet and deep-rooted popular misconceptions deriving there from. Accordingly, we propose to use some material that has been written over the past few months on subjects that we normally wouldn't have covered only broadly. The first of these will examine the subjects of Kakegoe and Kiai, both of great importance in all the classical weaponed disciplines. We have tended in the past to slightly neglect Iai-jutsu but the subject, in itself, tends to be 'inward looking' as we are, within this Renmei, mostly concerned with one of the oldest transmissions, the Hasegawa Eishin-ryū, and not the modern popular forms of the Settai Iai-dō. We may touch on the background reasons for this at some point but, nonetheless, parts of what we might discuss will apply whether the Iai is old or modern.
