By: Dave Long,UCCE Master Gardener of Lake Tahoe Meaning and Symbolism of Flowers and Plants found at the Tallac Estates Part II The gardens at the Tallac Estates are maintained by volunteers of the Tahoe Heritage Foundation, Forest Service staff and the South Tahoe Garden Club, with some of the plants and trees on-site planted by the original owners of the houses. Maybelle Tevis seems to have been the motivation behind the development of the arboretum, pond (now extensively modified from the original design) and the planting of the redwood trees. Her gardening prowess extended to the other family’s properties in Kern County. Maybella Romona Tevis Edith Taylor Pope Dextra Baldwin The rhododendrons around the Pope Estate were originally selected by Edith Pope. Mrs. Pope was also extensively involved in the landscaping design of the Burlingame Country Club in Hillsborough (Bay area). Dextra Baldwin is associated with hybrid peonies that were planted along an artificial stream that once ran on her property, and supported the Los Angeles County Arboretum in her later years. The plants that each of these ladies selected had some meaning to them personally and perhaps were placed to make a statement about the owners of these beautiful estates. The meaning assigned to plants, called floriography was given particular significance in the Victorian era. So here is Part II on the floriography of some of the plants and flowers found at the Tallac Estates. Astilbe – Astilbe spp. Sometimes called False Spirea, or False Goat’s Beard. Marissa Croft Honors Senior Thesis Spring 2016 Les Fleurs du Bien: The Language of Flowers in Contemporary France Abstract: The language of flowers is frequently characterized as a bygone tradition of the Victorians, yet traces of this symbolic system permeate daily life in 21st century France. An application of Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of social capital and Pierre Nora’s conceptualization of sites of memory to three ethnographic case studies of French floral traditions offers an explanation for the continued relevance and benefits of the language of flowers. Croft 1 Introduction “Every age and every clime has promulgated its own peculiar system of floral signs and it has been said that the language of flowers is as old as the days of Adam.” John Henry Ingram “Flora Symbolica” Perpetually dismissed as a frivolity of nature, the flower’s potent symbolic power has been subjected to much “shallow and inaccurate handling”.1 Far from frivolous and purely decorative, the flower functions as the reproductive organ of the plant, and thus bears the promise of fruit and marks the changing of the seasons. These two crucial functions have guaranteed an enduring link between humans and flowers. The ancient human attraction to flowers may have been of a more utilitarian nature, but it would not be long before flowers came to be used as ceremonial objects, endowed with special powers and symbolic meaning, as was the case of the lotus in ancient Egypt.2 This desire to ritualize the natural beauty of the flower would eventually blossom into today’s enormous floral global industry, a testament our deeply held desire for these potent living objects. -

Overview of Aomori Nebuta Festival The Nebuta Festival is the highlight of summer in the city of Aomori and also marks the symbolic end of the short warm season in this northern region. The focal points of the festival are floats called Nebuta. These giant creations that often depict a historical event or a scene from a Kabuki performance, are illuminated from within. For the local people, companies, and organizations involved with the festival, it is the culmination of months of preparation, and a wave of excitement can be felt throughout the city as the event approaches. Along with the Sendai Tanabata and the Akita Kanto, the Nebuta Festival is one of the three major Tohoku festivals held in August and swells the city with more than 2.5 million visitors every August 2 to 7. The Nebuta floats are pushed by participants along a three-kilometer parade course before audiences of local residents and visitors from around the country. Haneto (festival dancers) show off their moves and chant “Rassera! Rassera!” cheering on the pullers of the floats and rousing the excitement of the audience. The music of the hayashi festival musicians, who play drums, wooden flutes, and hand cymbals in the parade, reverberates along the route, while spectators enjoy festival fare from the food stalls. The Nebuta Festival most likely originated from a mix of the Tanabata Festival, a celebration of the stars, and a Japanese custom called Nemuri Nagashi. These traditions involved releasing lanterns onto rivers or the ocean, and the original Nebuta floats developed from these lanterns. -
