James Baldwin As a Writer of Short Fiction: an Evaluation
JAMES BALDWIN AS A WRITER OF SHORT FICTION: AN EVALUATION dayton G. Holloway A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 1975 618208 ii Abstract Well known as a brilliant essayist and gifted novelist, James Baldwin has received little critical attention as short story writer. This dissertation analyzes his short fiction, concentrating on character, theme and technique, with some attention to biographical parallels. The first three chapters establish a background for the analysis and criticism sections. Chapter 1 provides a biographi cal sketch and places each story in relation to Baldwin's novels, plays and essays. Chapter 2 summarizes the author's theory of fiction and presents his image of the creative writer. Chapter 3 surveys critical opinions to determine Baldwin's reputation as an artist. The survey concludes that the author is a superior essayist, but is uneven as a creator of imaginative literature. Critics, in general, have not judged Baldwin's fiction by his own aesthetic criteria. The next three chapters provide a close thematic analysis of Baldwin's short stories. Chapter 4 discusses "The Rockpile," "The Outing," "Roy's Wound," and "The Death of the Prophet," a Bi 1 dungsroman about the tension and ambivalence between a black minister-father and his sons. In contrast, Chapter 5 treats the theme of affection between white fathers and sons and their ambivalence toward social outcasts—the white homosexual and black demonstrator—in "The Man Child" and "Going to Meet the Man." Chapter 6 explores the theme of escape from the black community and the conseauences of estrangement and identity crises in "Previous Condition," "Sonny's Blues," "Come Out the Wilderness" and "This Morning, This Evening, So Soon." The last chapter attempts to apply Baldwin's aesthetic principles to his short fiction. -

10609-04 Auger 2/6/04 10:35 AM Page 47 MARTIN F. AUGER ‘A Tempest in a Teapot’: Canadian Military Planning and the St. Pierre and Miquelon Affair, 1940-1942 THE SMALL FRENCH COLONY OF ST. PIERRE AND MIQUELON, located some 32 kilometers off the south shore of Newfoundland, was a source of great concern for the Canadian government during the Second World War.1 When Nazi Germany defeated France in June 1940, the fate of the French Empire became uncertain. Canada and other Allied countries feared that French colonies might be used by the Germans to conduct military operations against them. The proximity of St. Pierre and Miquelon to Canada and the British colony of Newfoundland constituted a major threat. Negotiations immediately ensued between the American, British and Canadian governments as to the future of France’s territories in the Western Hemisphere. The main argument was whether or not the French islands needed to be occupied by Allied military forces. The issue, however, was solved in December 1941 when the Free French movement of General Charles de Gaulle sent a small naval task force to rally the archipelago to the Allied cause. Most historians who have analyzed the St. Pierre and Miquelon affair of 1940 to 1942 have focused upon the Free French takeover. Although some historians have studied Canada’s role in the affair from a diplomatic perspective, none have provided an in-depth analysis of Canadian military planning during this crisis.2 It is now clear that Canada undertook significant planning to launch an invasion. An understanding of the details of Canada’s invasion plan and the ultimate decision to postpone military action illuminates the changing structure of Canada’s relations with Great Britiain and the United States. -

Friday 27 November 1942 marked the nadir of French sea power in the twentieth century. Forewarned that German troops arrayed around the Mediterranean base of Toulon were intent on seizing the fleet at dawn, Admiral Jean de Laborde – Commander of the Force de Haute Mer, the High Seas Force – and the local Maritime Prefect, Vice Admiral André Marquis, ordered the immediate scuttling of all ships and submarines at their berths. Some 248,800 tons of capital ships, escorts, auxiliaries and submarines was scuttled as the Wehrmacht closed in on the dockyard.2 The French “Vichy navy” virtually ceased to exist that day. -

HAYDN RAWSTRON LIMITED Initially trained as a biologist, Kristinn Sigmundsson taught for a few years before becoming a singer, studying first at the Reykjavik Academy of Singing and then at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna, Austria. He began his career performing principally in his native Iceland, before going on to join the Hessische Staatstheater in Wiesbaden. As one of the world’s most sought after basses, Kristinn Sigmundsson regularly sings at the world's greatest opera houses: The MET, The Royal Opera House Covent Garden, L'Opéra National de Paris, where he has very nearly sung his entire repertoire, Vienna State Opera, Munich State Opera and the Semperoper Dresden. His broad repertoire extends from Don Basilio over Zaccaria to Gurnemanz. Lizotte Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Katharyne Mitchell Geography I examine a package of educational reforms enacted following the January 2015 attacks in and around Paris, most notably directed at the offices of the satirical publication Charlie Hebdo. These interventions, known collectively as the “Great Mobilization for the Republic’s Values”, represent the latest in a string of educational attempts meant to reinvigorate a sense of national pride among immigrant-descended youth – especially Muslim – in France’s unique form of state secularism, laïcité. While ostensibly meant to apply equally across the nationalized French school system, in practice La Grande Mobilisation has been largely enacted in schools located in urban spaces of racialized difference thought to be “at risk” of anti-republican behavior. Through my work, I show that practitioners exercise their own power by subverting and adapting geopolitical discourses running through educational laïcité – notably global security, women’s rights, and communalism – are nuanced by school-based practitioners, who interpret state directives in the light of their institutional knowledge and responsiveness to the social and economic profiles of their student populations. -

Natural Selection and Coalescent Theory John Wakeley Harvard University INTRODUCTION The story of population genetics begins with the publication of Darwin’s Origin of Species and the tension which followed concerning the nature of inheritance. Today, workers in this field aim to understand the forces that produce and maintain genetic variation within and between species. For this we use the most direct kind of genetic data: DNA sequences, even entire genomes. Our “Great Obsession” with explaining genetic variation (Gillespie, 2004a) can be traced back to Darwin’s recognition that natural selection can occur only if individuals of a species vary, and this variation is heritable. Darwin might have been surprised that the importance of natural selection in shaping variation at the molecular level would be de-emphasized, beginning in the late 1960s, by scientists who readily accepted the fact and importance of his theory (Kimura, 1983). The motivation behind this chapter is the possible demise of this Neutral Theory of Molecular Evolution, which a growing number of population geneticists feel must follow recent observations of genetic variation within and between species. One hundred fifty years after the publication of the Origin, we are struggling to fully incorporate natural selection into the modern, genealogical models of population genetics. The main goal of this chapter is to present the mathematical models that have been used to describe the effects of positive selective sweeps on genetic variation, as mediated by gene genealogies, or coalescent trees. Background material, comprised of population genetic theory and simulation results, is provided in order to facilitate an understanding of these models. -

Augustin Dumay International critics have compared Augustin Dumay to the great violinists of the 20th century, describing him as a “great classical stylist”, a reputation underscored by his outstanding recordings for Deutsche Grammophon: Beethoven’s complete sonatas with Maria João Pires, a set that “surely ranks with Grumiaux/Haskil, Menuhin/Kempff, or Perlman/Ashkenazy” (International Piano), Brahms’ trios in which “the Milstein legacy in Dumay’s playing is wonderfully apparent” (Gramophone), and Mozart’s concertos with the Camerata Salzburg, “without exaggeration one of the finest Mozart violin concerto discs ever made” (Classic CD), in which he “confirms that he is an exceptional interpreter of Mozart as were Stern or Grumiaux before him” (Classica). Born into a family of musicians – his mother is a cellist and pianist, his father an amateur violinist – Augustin Dumay started violin lessons at the age of 5, after attending a concert by Nathan Milstein. Aged ten, he entered the Paris Conservatoire, winning the premier prix at the age of thirteen. His first concert at the Théâtre des Champs- Élysée followed a year later and he then appeared at the Montreux Festival, playing for Joseph Szigeti and Henryk Szeryng, who invited him to replace him on a tour of South America. On his return, Augustin Dumay worked in Paris with Nathan Milstein, who said of him: “I believe he will take his place amongt the great violinists of the year 2000”. He then went on to work in Brussels with Arthur Grumiaux for five years. He soon became familiar to concert audiences in France, but his international career took off thanks to his encounter with Herbert von Karajan. -
