Love, death, religion, nature and nationalism became the great themes of the romantic period. The treatment of these themes by the precursors of romanticism was later interpreted and developed by the major romantic poets, Alphonse de Lamartine, Victor Hugo, Alfred de Musset and Alfred de Vigny. -

Open to graduate and upper level undergraduate students. For upper level undergraduates who have already completed all major requirements, this course can count for SUNY Cortland’s graduate program. Local Curiosities The area of Villedieu Intercom, counting 29 municipalities around Villedieu-les-Poêles, is crossed by the rivers Sienne, Vire, Sée and Soulles. This area, which is typical of Normandy, is characterized by several smaller mountains, such as the Mont Robin, near Percy, with a height of 276m. Beslon: • Cross-shaped church, which was enlarged in the middle of the 19th century, among others with stones of the Saint-Fraguaire church, which is right next to it. Memory of the World International Register Collections of the 19th century of the Polish Historical and Literary Society / Polish Library in Paris / Adam Mickiewicz Museum (Poland) 2012-26 1.0 Summary (max 200 words) The Polish Library in Paris (Bibliothèque Polonaise de Paris—BPP) was created in 1838 by Polish political émigrés who had found shelter in the French capital. This is where they could carry on various actions aiming at gaining back the independence of the State which had been lost at the end of the 18th century. Led by the wave of ideologies linked to independence and people’s freedom movements arisen in Europe in the early 19th century, it was established as a peaceful form aiming at fighting for freedom and independence. In the 19th century, Europe built places of memory such as libraries and archives in the independence States. At that time, the BPP acted as a means of substitution and continuity of the institutions destroyed by the foreign forces occupying the Polish territories. It came to birth thanks to the efforts carried out by the émigrés and the support of European intellectual elites as well as the authorities of the French State. The latter felt involved in the idea originating the creation of the BPP and they supported the action of a nation whose fight for independence, during the Uprising of 1831, had moved many European nations, aroused their admiration and strengthened their own aspirations for independence. The Polish Library gathered the scattered sources which enabled to document the history of Poland, along with the publications carried out by the emigration. -

Hallmark, Portland State University, graduate student, “Parody, Performance, and Conspiracy in Early Eighteenth-Century France: The Subversive Court of Louise Bénédicte de Bourbon, Daughter-in-Law of the Sun King (1700–1718)” Abstract: This paper examines how the French princess Louise Bénédicte de Bourbon, duchesse du Maine (1676–1753), the wife of Louis XIV’s illegitimate son, the duc du Maine, established an exclusive court at her château de Sceaux beginning in the year 1700 that challenged the centralized cultural system of the French monarchical state. Located twenty kilometers away from the rigid and controlling political center of Versailles, the court of the duchesse du Maine subverted social norms by inventing and performing parodies of court protocols, chivalric orders, emblems, and other forms of monarchical imagery. In a time and place where women were both legally and socially barred from holding positions of authority, the duchesse du Maine created a parallel world in which she was the sovereign, presiding over a court of important political, cultural, and intellectual figures, including the philosopher Voltaire. ISBN-10: 0739112686, ISBN-13: 978-0739112687. $60.00. by Irwin Wall, Professor Emeritus, University of California, Riverside and Visiting Scholar, NYU Published by H-Diplo on 11 June 2007 nti-Americanism, Seth Armus reminds us, has long been a permanent feature of French cultural life; it is a cultural trope, an idée fixe, that exists independently as a mode of intellectual discourse quite independently of American government policies and behavior. Of course such behavior influences it strongly, and the recent crisis over Iraq has brought it once again to the fore. This revival has also stimulated an outpouring of studies, some of them extraordinary, and it should be said at the outset that Philippe Roger’s work, now available in English, has become an instant classic, required reading on the subject.1 Roger traces anti-Americanism back to the eighteenth century, when French naturalists believed that life in the Americas was of necessity savage, brutish, short, and destructive of civilization. He takes us through several critical periods in its development, from the early national period through the Civil and Spanish-American wars, when the specter of American imperialism first began to frighten Europeans, through the 1920s and 1930s, and the postwar period. The merit of Armus’s study is to focus in on one such critical moment, the period from 1930 to 1948, which in his telling became a defining moment, in which anti-Americanism developed into an obsession with some thinkers, a world-view and an ideology almost in itself. -

Nina de Villard, musicienne, poète, muse, animatrice de salon » Marie Boisvert Doctor of Philosophy Degree Département d’études françaises University of Toronto 2013 Résumé De 1862 à 1882, Nina de Villard attire chez elle à peu près tous les hommes qui laisseront leur marque dans le monde des arts et des lettres : Verlaine, Mallarmé, Maupassant, Manet et Cézanne figurent tous parmi ses hôtes. Ayant accueilli ces grands hommes, Nina et son salon trouvent, par la suite, leur place dans plusieurs livres de souvenirs et romans qui, loin de rendre leur physionomie et leur personnalité, entretiennent plutôt la confusion. Portraits fortement polarisés présentant une muse régnant sur un salon brillant d’une part, et de l’autre, une femme dépravée appartenant à un univers d’illusions perdues, ces textes construisent une image difforme et insatisfaisante de Nina et de ses soirées. Face à cette absence de cohérence, nous sommes retournée aux sources primaires en quête de la véritable Nina et de son salon. ii La première partie de notre thèse est consacrée à Nina qui, malgré des années de formation conformes à la norme, remet en question la place qui lui revient : celle d’épouse et de femme confinée à l’intérieur. Nina est avide de liberté et revendique l’identité de pianiste et une vie où elle peut donner des concerts, sortir et recevoir quand cela lui plaît.
